Hobie Kayaks / 2010 PA 14 for $1700 worth it?
« on: July 10, 2017, 11:55:10 AM »
Hello,

I'm in the process of purchasing a PA 14, but one my buddy said his brother is trying to sell his PA 14 which was built in 2010. His brother is willing to sell it to me for $1700. I've read a few issues with the older model and wondering if it is worth it or should I just look into a 2017 model? I would like to have the new mirage drive with the reverse capability and add whatever to make it track better. Just wondering with all the features I want in it, I might end up with a price tag close to a new PA 14.

Appreciate all the suggestions. Thank you!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Any Vintage Penn reel users here?

I own 3 old penns. 140, 112h, and 113h. Caught 3 salmons two weeks ago with my 112h. My 140 and 112h has an upgraded drag stack and SS sleeves. 113h will get new guts and frame.

Old penns are built like a tank. Love them!

Thanks fellas!
Never fished out in Benicia. What species do they have? Any launch sites over there?

Striper and Sturgeon year round.  Salmon and Jack Smelt when they're running through the straight.  You can launch kayak from public launch on 9th Street or at the end of First Street.

Yep, fished at that pier today, and it was super windy today, but a great spot to launch a kayak.

Todd is awesome! My rod is schweeet and ready to go on my tuna hunt next month. Thanks again fellas!

I have my reels fixed by Todd when I used to live in Benicia.  Great guy and he does quality jobs.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. I'm planning on making my way there this Thursday. Also, thinking about doing a little bank fishing while I'm there. Any good spots for salmon and what kind of rig do most people use? I was thinking of throwing lures around, but I kinda want a bait soaking in the water as well. Trolling from the bank?

Kinda of far for you but I got mine done in Benicia. It's right next to Benicia Bait and Tackle. Might be called Todds.

Awesome! Thank you sir! Just called them and sounds like a good place. Will be making my way down there. Gives me an excuse to check out another shop and see what kind of gear they offer.

Hi, does anyone know of a good place or person to get one of my guides fixed on my rod? Appreciate the help!

Finally was able to pick up my new Hobie PA 14 Camo Edition the other day. Now all I need to do is rig it up, get all the safety gear and get out crabbing and fishing.  Thanks to Jon at Pacific Outfitter in Eureka for all of help.

How do you like it? I am also looking into purchasing a PA14. Will you be taking her to the bay or delta?

I love it so far.  I have had it out on Humboldt Bay a few times and it handles great.  Handles waves fine, great for peddling in against the tide and does not seem to be affected by the wind too bad.  I also like the storage capacity and the overall weight rating.  I am hoping to have it out on the ocean and Trinidad Bay either Wednesday or Friday of this week.  I still have a little bit of tinkering to do as far as organizational layout.  But I should have that figured out this week.   If you have the opportunity to demo one take advantage of it.  That way you know what your getting into.  They are heavy to load and unload and can be a pain if you plan on doing a beach launch that is a long walking distance away from the parking lot.  But overall I am pleased with my investment.

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. Please let me know how it does in the ocean.

I've sat in it to get the feel of how big it is and I'm ok with the weight. Unfortunately, the kayak place I went to was not near the water. I did rent a big tuna and paddling that thing was pretty bad, but felt stable. I'm sure the PA14 will be so much better. I just want to make sure it'll be ok in the ocean or bay. I don't want to be flipping that thing over.

Cool mustang! I too have one, but a 67. [emoji3]

This won't be any easier to paddle than the big tuna! But then again it wasn't meant to be paddled..  make sure to have spare parts and the ability to flip this back over if something happens. Paddling this home will not be an option in any rough conditions, bring tow line too.
You guys need to get out of California your getting too damn soft... I have a Big Tuna and it paddles just fine for me (17 yr garbageman) and not the fluffy truck does the lifting kind!!!! I can't match distance with The outback guys I fished with but speed and turns were never an issue...... muscle up buttercups  :smt044

Now in all honasty I have been in the surf soincycle in several boats and the tuna was the easiest to surf upright. Also has a guy go out of PC with us in one, he stayed upright but had a hell of a time getting the find out once we landed standing in 3 ft of water.... had the BOAT between himself and the open ocean instead of the beach... got steam rolled when the first wave hit. If you roll that in open water =
1. It would be the first I have heard....
2. Have a line you can clip off a rail throw over and possibly reboard upside down then Wright it like a catamaran

Haha!! The big tuna I rented didn't have a rudder and I believe I was given a short paddle, but it's most likely to the lack of skills. [emoji3] however, if I'm getting a big kayak, I would think peddle is much better.

Welcome to NCKA!
IMHO PA14 are very heavy, specially if you're planning to car top them.
What species are you planning to target?
Test drive all styles so you don't regret your purchase.
Good luck.

Targeting whatever is around me. [emoji3] I also like fishing around the delta. Am looking for a stable kayak. I also have a truck and not too worried about loading and unloading. Have tested the big tuna and it's a pig to paddle, but had an awesome time catching stripers at the delta. My heart is set on a peddle kayak. Have already seen most of the peddle kayaks available, except for the titan. Do you guys think the PA14 will be ok in the Bay?

Welcome to NCKA, Fish67. We're lucky that there can be good fishing on both sides of the peninsula. How far have you gotten with gearing up and practicing skills? Lots of great people on here.

Thanks everyone!

kpd - not very far. I don't own one yet, but have rented a kayak to fish around the delta. Now, am looking for one and have been eyeing the PA14, but wanted to get people's take before I make the purchase. I want to be able to use it around here and the delta. I'm geared up when it comes to rods and reels. Looking forward to all the suggestions.
