CA Regulations / Dungeness Crab question
« on: May 12, 2023, 11:18:02 AM »
Is it legal to catch and cook crab out on your boat while you're crabbing?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Silicone spray for rudder lines
« on: October 06, 2018, 12:05:20 PM »
Just a quick reminder. I have 2012 Outback and over time the rudder controls have gotten a little harder to raise and lower and the steering a little more stiff. I sprayed everything down with silicone recently and it made a huge difference. Nice and smooth again. I thought it might be nice to mention it if you've forgotten like I did. Well worth doing, IMO.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Hobie Outback rudder control lines
« on: June 25, 2018, 03:20:10 PM »
The bungie cord that keeps my rudder T handle retracted came unattached. Not only can I not reach that far back where it should be, I can't even see it. There's a knot at the end of the bungie cord that hooks into something, according to Hobie's website, but it doesn't show exactly what it is or where it's located. Has anybody else come across this problem? Thanks.

General Talk / You can keep a Canary this year.
« on: February 08, 2017, 10:10:44 AM »
I don't know if this has already been reported but:
Starting in 2017, anglers will be allowed to retain canary rockfish for the first time in more than a decade.

Craftsmen's Corner / Redneck "gaff"
« on: August 10, 2015, 04:13:00 PM »
I'm not a big fan of nets while ocean fishing, except when required of course. They just seem awkward and always in the way. I also don't like flopping a netted fish in my lap. It might be better if it wasn't for all those spines. :smt001 I've been just lipping my rock fish or grabbing them by the gill plate with a gloved hand. I lost a real nice cab doing that awhile back. It's a little risky with a big lingcod too.

I was cleaning out the garage this morning and hit on an idea with an old paint roller. I made a hook out of it. I think I can slip the point through the gill plate. At that point I can lift the fish's head up out of the water and give it the 'ol Barry Bonds treatment before bringing it aboard. The over all length is about 3'.

Note: If I decide to release a fish I just reach out with the pliers and unhook while it's still in the water. No gaffing.

I'm going to try it out in the next few days and report back.

Fish Talk / "Blue" Ling question
« on: August 04, 2015, 09:35:26 PM »
I caught my first blue lingcod the other day. When I filleted it the meat is a light blue. It turned snow white when cooked.

What's the deal with blue lingcod? A separate species? Something in their diet? Thanks.

I always see kayakers out there. You should be mooching while waiting for a splash hit! :smt001

For Sale / WTB crab rings/traps

Looking to gear up for crab. If someone in the Eureka area has one or two extra that you could part with, I'd appreciate it. I know they're not terribly expensive to buy new, but I'm kind of on a budget and if you don't need them and I can save a few bucks. :smt006

General Talk / A rough ocean?
« on: October 02, 2013, 09:57:45 AM »
I'm new to kayak ocean fishing and was just wondering what you all consider to be a rough ocean? Specifically, what forecast do you decide "it's too rough".?

Or maybe a better question would be, what's the worst conditions you have been out in?

I was fishing today in Humboldt Bay along the east end of the South Jetty. I was fishing a 6" white swim bait in about 12' of water.

I was determined to release all fish with the exception of a keeper lingcod. I caught a fish about 12" long. It was basically dark brown with crimson red splotches. That was kind of creepy by itself. But what really set it apart was that the inside of the mouth was a light blue as was the inside of the gill plates. About the most beautiful blue that I have ever seen. Even the teeth were blue!

I had my camera with me and completely spaced it out.

I've spent the last two hours looking on line and I haven't seen anything even close.

Any idea what it was? If you've ever caught one I'm sure you would remember. I know I'll never forget.

Thanks for any incite. I'm really curious.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / I saw something today
« on: August 09, 2013, 05:45:43 PM »
I was salmon fishing today in my kayak in the salt. Where I was fishing had a huge amount of bait with lots of birds working. I have to admit it's pretty exciting in a kayak.

Along came a school of porpoises. They came pretty close to where I was and began to mill around. Usually they just keep on going but not this time. Soon I had them all around me breaching in all directions. Then one surfaced within about 20 feet of my yak. The amazing thing was that right along side the porpoise was about a 25 lb. salmon. The salmon appeared to mirror the porpoise! My initial thought was a baby porpoise, but indeed it was a salmon. No doubt in my mind.

I had no idea they associated with each other. In fact I always figured they might be enemies.

Has anyone ever seen this before? I think you see more from a kayak than a PB.

Introductions / Checking in from Eureka
« on: August 03, 2013, 07:58:23 PM »
Hello everyone, I'm Steve. I'm recently retired and a life long resident of Humboldt County. I've been duck hunting from my scull boat on Humboldt Bay and surrounding waters since the 1960's, so kayaking seems like a natural progression for me.

I met one of your members, Brandi, at my sister's on Christmas Eve 2012 and she told me about salmon fishing and crabbing. At her suggestion I checked out the many videos on YouTube. I was hooked!

I've spent a lot of time here as a guest trying to learn as much as possible. I made the leap and bought a 2013 Hobie Outback awhile back and have taken it out on the Bay twice in calm water. It seems 100 times safer than a scull boat :smt001, but there is a learning curve for sure. Plus I'm not as young as I used to be. I've got a PFD, FJ wet suit, a VHF radio. I have all the fishing gear already except for a few minor things.

As I get stronger and more confident, I'm looking forward to hooking up with someone and doing some rock fishing and crabbing. I think it will be awhile before I head out the JAWS of Humboldt Bay like LoletaEric and Brandi though.

I chose the name NotaSeal because I was thinking of writing it on the bottom of my kayak for the sharks.

Thanks for this great site and your friendship!

Steve
