How on earth are they going to in force this I just looked most lines are 1/2 out mile from shore and some are even way more than that like a large cove could be a mile out ? They would have to fly over with a drone take a snapshot to prove you were outside the boundary or by boat and pull up next to you and check your position. Any other ways I would be interested in knowing just for my own information not to exceed the rules. Of course we must obey the rules just saying how they going to in force this just asking ok  don't get all huffy please ? https://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/Smileys/Lots_O_Smileys/006.gif

If we have a FF without an option to incorporate the 20 and/or 50 fathom file, will it be a safe assumption to catch RF within the depth <120 feet?

That's my take and I never fish past 100ft anyway. Really rare I go over 100ft. I just want to catch a fish not be a Navionics engineer.
Go fishing have fun stay inside 100ft and enjoy your day fishing. You must have a descending device that you need for sure.

CA Regulations / Re: Is RF open?

So for us nearshore no joy....So May1 all of California season is open its not all broken up in different counties ?

In general, yes, on May 1, all of California is open to 20 fathom or less to rockfishing. But areas south of Point Lopez are already open since April 1st. Please check the regulations here:

https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Groundfish-Summary

OK thanks ! oh man I'm getting excited now, last year was such a bummer I only got to go 1 time and it closed.

Whats the reason for removal ?
Is it a danger to boaters who are going to fast and not looking where there going in the fog ?

ahhhh if we go by last years regulations  Closed: Jan 1 – Jul 15 so April 1st is not the starting date for 2024 not "yet" for us 20 fathoms shoreward right?

What are there rules for party boats for a descending device ?
Another question:  if your on a party boat and you have caught your limit do you have to stop fishing ? My son said they move fish from your bag to others who have not caught limits and every one keeps fishing ?

What are there rules for party boats for a descending device ? Same rule
Another question:  if your on a party boat and you have caught your limit do you have to stop fishing ? My son said they move fish from your bag to others who have not caught limits and every one keeps fishing ?  There is a boat limit rule.

Paul
Thanks for the clarification...

Ya agree about the clutter on the kayak for sure
Im going to use a heavy Duty 2ft old fishing rod n reel and a 12oz weight. I can usually get the fish to go back down on its own so its not going to be that bad. Plus I do believe if the fish is in fair shape these will help with survival rates.

Thanks for the info!

SFD looks super-simple. But, are we really supposed to use a descending device, even if fish are caught in relatively shallow water? I usually fish for for bigger game, and generally barbless. I've released vast numbers of RF bycatch, and it's always no-touch--just grab the hook and shake. It seems to me that a descending device will have a lot more chance of harming the fish than what I do, with no possible benefit, at least in shallow(ish) water.

No I'm sure if it goes down easy like you said a few shakes and it goes , that's the best way anyway. As far as harming effect if its bad enough its lingcod/shark bait.
Can you imagine the look on that lingcod when it sees a large fish being shaken as you yank on the descending device. LOL heck it might be worth putting a lure on above the descending device and leave it there after you yank the other fish off eh? never know.

So there shutting down all of October and then re-open for November hmmm kinda like the old abalone diving rules where July was closed. Interesting.

12
I read this and maybe someone can clarify the last month skipping October ?
"20-fathom boundary line in May through September, and November." ?
So October its closed ?

Remember that the people proposing the new MPAs will need a project next year, and the year after that, etc. Their projects will not involve adding fishing opportunities. Only mother nature can do that. The quillbacks are fine, rockfish and lings are abundant, and there's no actual problem for these clowns to address, but they've become more aggressive about restricting fishing and crabbing anyway.

These people are either politically compromised, easily manipulated by pressure, or true believers raised on every nature show telling them the ocean is dying because of fisherman. If there are no "problems" for them to address, they'll make things up and that's exactly what the new MPAs are. It's just the latest made-up cause. They want to reduce fishing opportunities gradually while saying that's not what they are doing. If limits are cut, that's not coming back. If MPAs are established, the fishing opportunities aren't coming back.

Exactly I will even go further and say they want to stop "any" fishing and diving along the coast, they are not angler friendly. There are a ton of things they could put in place to help out but there "only" response is it "close" the season.

Could not agree more cut the limits in half and separate PB and commercial fishermen from private boaters and kayakers.
How about size limits for inshore and even shore and pier fishermen I see folks keeping little tiny blues and blacks that can easily be thrown back. A lot of the coastal states back east have a ton of size limits we could surly do it to at least some of the other rockfish.

15

So the 20 fathom = (120ft) boundary you speak of is that inside 20 fathoms or outside ?

Like last year they opened for what 6 weeks they don't seam to realize in throes 6 weeks we "maybe" can go ocean fishing what maybe 2 times if your a working man. They don't seem to realize weather is a big factor if we can even go fishing.
Lets face it these regulations are all about the party boats if they were serious about really reducing the rockfish take they would drop the limit to 6 fish and 1 lingcod. Make Blue and Black rockfish and other species that you can throw back easy "size limits" for inshore fishing, including shore fishing any rockfing from shore can be tossed back. Descender for any boat and kayak would help too.
There is so much they could do but for some reason they never drop the whole bag limit and mandatory size for rockfish I have no idea why. They could make a different bag and size for party boats ouside the 20 or 30 fathom limit and not let the party boats fish inside.
Together were all competing for the same fish in the same waters they need to seprtate party/commercial from recreation and kayak fishing.
IDK guys Im a really old fishing dude I could be talking out my but this is just my take after fish out coast for 70+years sorry !
