And a simple cable bicycle lock stopped him/her/it.

I was parked in front of my dentist's office near the main county library in Eureka. While I was experiencing some drillin' and cuttin' in my head, some asshole thought my kayak looked ripe for the taking.

Nobody saw it happen, but when I got out to my pickup the tiedowns were loose or removed but my boat was still there. The SHPOS also left a hoodie on the roof of my shell.

The only reason I can figure that my kayak isn't In a local pawn shop is the cable lock through a scupper hole and around my rack.

This happened in the middle of town in broad daylight. A $10 bike lock saved the day.

Anyone want a blue hoodie?

Any fingerprints?  Glad the cable saved the yak!  Thanks for sharing Crash.

That sucks!   :smt012  I'm glad they didn't get away with it - I noticed your cable the other day and thought "what a good idea that is!"

Glad you had it locked. People are getting crazy these days. I have had three sign boats stolen from in front of my store, all we're locked up and had 3" holes drilled in them so they looked like Swiss cheese. My only hope was that thy took them for a paddle on a really cold lake.

I scratched my Drivers license in hidden spot inside my yaks.
I read an article at craiglist about a yak owner who got burglarized in Sausalito.  He tracked the down the SOB thief through an ad in craiglist.  He called the local police but the cop couldn't do anything because the owner did not register his kayak with the manufacturer.
The cop said a picture with his mods wasn't enough.  The owner ended up paying the thief to get his own kayak back.  The SOB thief said he bought it for cash from a kayak wholesaler.

Eureka?  That's what you get in the big city.
I used to hang a cow bell and a string of cheap holiday bells inside my boat in campgrounds thinking the sound would chase thieves off at night.
Depending on the model, scupper and rack configuration, I've "hidden" an extra cable lock (or made it harder to get to) hoping the fuss and bother and extra time would act as a deterrent.

FishingAddict, that story sickens me and I hope it proves to be the worst case exception.  What's worse is that there has been a longtime ring of kayak stealers in the SF Bay Area.  Boats and racks.  I once read they were pretty well organized (not mafia, probably tweakers) about it.

Glad the bike lock saved your yak this time.

Just a heads up, though - I used to use one of the small bike locks for my yak but one day I forgot to unlock the lock before I left for Lake Mendo. I got to Mendo and realised what happened while I was trying to unload my yak. I thought I was going to have to go to Wal-Mart and buy a pair of bolt cutters to save the fishing day, but thought I'd give my pair of needle nose pliers a shot just for the hell of it. Sure enough the little cutting section of the pliers cut right through the cable!

So the smaller diameter cable locks only help to keep the honest people honest....and I guess those dumb enough to try to steal a kayak in broad daylight.

Too bad DNA testing isn't cheap and easy. You could get the POS's DNA from the hoodie...lol.

$%^&# theifs!   It kind makes you wish you could have caught it in the act, so when the paramedics arrive to remove your boot from it ass you can have the staisfaction of knowing you saved your kayak!

My much older Hobbie has huge scupper holes and will take a larger cable.  I also use ratchet straps as most people seem to get retarded when trying to undo them.  Not fool proof but a delaying device.

I buy coated cable and make end loops with those hammer down cable clamps. That way I can make them custom length and they are cheap. I use a little master lock for each yak. I am always nervous about my gear when staying at motels in the less than reputable locations, like Marina Del Ray.  :smt003
