General Fishing Tips / Crab bait - Rockfish carcass
« on: November 02, 2017, 09:42:44 AM »
So, I read an article on SFGate.com about the crab opener, and Tom states in the article that rockfish carcass attracts rock crabs... Is this true?

Traditionally, I use squid and catfood, but this year i saved a bunch of RF and ling carcasses, as well as fish guts.

So what's the scoop on rockfish carcass attracting rock crabs?

Hobie Kayaks / Fin Mast Bent... need advice
« on: November 01, 2017, 07:52:55 PM »
Background story: Went diving at Albion, conditions were not good, Revo 13 rolled over despite bracing best I could, and yat got pushed into some rocks in the shallowsafter rolling over.  Then realized that my tubo fins (v2) on my MD180 drive were both bent.  See photo.

I put a 5/16 bolt to protect the thread, and used the hammer to try to straighten out the bent rod.  Could not get it to straighten out using a standard hammer.

Any suggestions?

General Talk / Lowrance Elite 5 chirp problem when logging sonar
« on: October 24, 2017, 06:09:45 PM »
When I log sonar, after a bit the display freezes. Can't power down and have to disconnect power supply. When not logging sonar, no problems at all. Anyone else experience this?

General Talk / Oops, I did it again (Reel Advice Needed)
« on: October 18, 2017, 11:02:20 PM »
Any suggestions?

I have 2 Abu Garcia backup reels: 6600BCX (practically new); and 6500 C3.  I tried to oil/grease the reels, and they no longer feel the same- not smooth. They work, but it "feels" shitty, not buttery smooth (excuse the technical jargon here  :smt003).  I'm guessing I didn't put it back together in the exact same order, or something like that.  I should have known better, since I'm not mechanically handy.  For me to service either reel (with shipping round trip) it would cost the same (or more) as buying another used one on Ebay.

What's my best option?  I would even be willing to give it to someone who can service it and give it to a kid or something.  Give me some ideas.

It's like having a diver friend spot fish for you, except he doesn't ask for beer in exchange!

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie Releases Newest Color Scheme - Construction Orange!
« on: October 11, 2017, 08:23:21 AM »
Can you see me now ??  A $10 Experiment.

I recently bought a 2017 demo Revo 13 in dune color.  Most of my yaks have been Yum Yum Yellow, b/c I like the color, and more importantly the visibility.  You don't get much visibility with "dune", so I bought some contact paper and Gorilla tape- see the results below.  It's ugly, but that's OK.  More interesting than plain "concrete grey".

As for the new yellow Revo 13 next to it, it's my friend's new yak.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / I too have battery woes...
« on: October 07, 2017, 09:26:30 PM »
I too have battery woes...

Fishfinder: Lowrance Elite 5 Chirp

For the first 30 minutes or so, I get a depth reading of +/- 2 feet.  Then it worked fine.
It wasn't on simulation mode.

The transducer is mounted on a Revo 13, Lowrance ready mount.

Battery is an eBay battery (12v SLA).

Thanks in advance

Places to Launch and Camp / Salt Point State Park - launch intel needed
« on: October 04, 2017, 10:55:52 AM »
I've never been to Salt Point, and had questions about the following:

1. Able to launch Kayaks?
2. Where do you park?  the overflow parking lot?
3. The distance from parking to launch manageable? Can I unload near the launch and then park?
4. Is there an envelope to put in the day use fee?

It's amazing how I've always gone to the same places (FR, TC, OC) to launch, and never bothered to explore further along the Sonoma coast.  Or maybe those are the only readily accessible kayak launch sites along that stretch of the Sonoma coast?

Thanks in advance

A friend of mine just bought a yak, and he's interested in buying an all around reel for Norcal waters (RF/Ling/Salmon).

If you have one for sale, let me know.

Wanted To Buy / WTB: Transducer Mount for Lowrance Elite 5
« on: September 28, 2017, 10:21:20 PM »
Now that I've upgraded to a newer Revo, need a transducer mount for Lowrance Elite 5 in order to install it onto the Lowrance-Ready Hobie Mount.  Photo below.

Or if you have any DIY solutions, I am all ears.  Thx.
