There were a lot of kayakers on Sunday at Santa Cruz.  :)
The weather was great and sea was calm.
I started with 4 rock fishes but no Hali, therefore I moved to little deeper.

When I was trolling around 55~60FOW, My rod suddenly bended over while reel screaming with drag sound.
After several seconds, it seems stuck on the bottom. When I tried pull it, it didn't move at all.

I thought fish was gone and the hook stuck on the bottom.
I tried to pull the line by hand to cut it and also avoid the rod damage.

When I tried to pull it up by hand, I was able to pull it up slowly!!  but still no movement. It was very heavy though.
I thought that it was abandoned crap net or something.

When I pull it up about half, I tried to reeling again.
and Boom!!!! I could see doormat under water.

Very carefully gaff it & clip it, fortunately she was calm until I remove gaff.
As soon as I took gaff away she started bounce and it almost could have flipped the kayak.
I had to hold the clip since the clip was not connected with line yet.

It was exact 40"
It's shame that my Gopro was out on that exact moment  :smt010

By the way how to join to 40" club? haha.

Diggin on that remote motor speed controller :). Looks like the PWM is still on the Watersnake's shaft?

I put PWM in the Waterproof Plastic Enclosure Box and leave it in milk crate in cargo area.
Refer to below video.

Your videos are very inspiring!.
Hope to see you again.

Good meeting you two on the water! She out fishes you and I bet it will continue that way! That is the best, isn't it?

Oh are you Korean too?
I have Korean kakao chat room for Kayak fishing.

Nice fish for early season!  I'm probably one of few on here that understood that entire video in Korean.   :smt005

Sorry to hear that.
This was my second halibut trip in 2021, I went out OP once without wife the week before last.
At that time I had same experience with you herring torn in half.
I'm sure that you can get them next time!  :smt003

I got a couple baits torn in half, but didn’t bring any treble trailer hooks like a fool. I’m fairly sure they would have got hooked if I had those on there.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / ARW, 36" Halibut
« on: March 06, 2021, 11:07:54 PM »
This was my wife's 2nd halibut trip.
And she hooked 36" while I couldn't get any.
She got 37" Hali on 1st halibut trip last year.

I can't believe it, she is not fishing expert but probably has some sense.
Last image was last year at Rock Away.

Yakattack fish finder mount would be the best, little bit pricey though.

I'm newbie on gaffing.
You may be able to learn by referring my stupid gaff action.

I learned something and put on the video but any additional tips and comments for gaffing would be welcome.

Most important thing would be moving forward while deploying the rig.
And when you stop or stay you should retrieve the rig.

Also below T bar is quite helpful to avoid tangle.
