Went to LM today to get some salt and coffee.
Low tide. Took some pictures and found a dead 12” halibut in the rocks.
So many memories from this beach..

I think not a halibut, the arch doesn't look right over the pectoral fin. Large dab or sole?

Doesn't look like a halibut to me. I'm thinking sole or dab.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Tails not right and with the speckles and looks like a crest on the head, pretty sure that's a sand sole.

I've caught these near shore from a kayak and even once from shore.

You may be right. In any case, sand dabs are left-eyed, so definitely not one of those...

Interesting. I have to say that when I saw the fish,  the bulging eye and general coloration didn’t seem like halibut to me either. But I’ve never seen a sand sole or a sand dab so..

You are missing out my friend. Sand dabs are so plentiful and a local favorite. On the menu at pretty much all restaurants in the Monterey Bay.  :smt001

Sand and Petra sole are great as well but take a little more searching for than a sand dab.

One of my favorite dishes to order at the Sur restaurant in Carmel by the sea!! Sand dabs are really good eating! I target them, sole and halibut out of HMB and with the rock fish closures this year I’ll be fishing a lot more for flatties.

First time I had sand dabs was from Andy Fryer tossed in hot oil after cutting off their heads, and then eaten bones and all on sourdough roll.  It was good  :smt003
