Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Gloves for Rock Fish
« on: January 02, 2015, 12:07:28 PM »
What gloves do you use while fishing for rock fish?  I have been stuck too many times and don't much enjoy the experience.
I searched the site but didn't notice anything recent  .

General Talk / El Nino Fizzling Out For 2014

As much as I was hoping to catch a dorado off Nor Cal it isn't looking good for this year after all the early predictions of a super el nino for California

General Talk / New Kayaking Buddy
« on: July 12, 2014, 11:11:50 AM »
Went up to Lake Siskiyou earlier in the week to get my wife on a kayak.  She recently retired and has decided she would like to get a kayak and occasionally go fishing with me.  I rented a Revo 13 from CCK to try out and my wife used my Outback.
We had a lot of fun.  She loved the Outback.  I was unimpressed with the Revo.  It felt cramped to me and didn't have the fishing amenities of the Outback.  Also, it didn't have turbo fins and I had to pedal twice as much to keep up with my wife the Outback with the turbo fins.
The trip was mostly about getting my Marcia used to kayaking though we did catch a few small bass.  Other boaters were getting easy limits of trout.  The weather was a bit warm but beautiful

General Talk / Don't Let Rider Around Your Wife!
« on: June 22, 2014, 10:36:33 AM »
My wife finally thinks it’s a good time for her to get a kayak and do some fishing with me so we go out to the CCK Paddlefest yesterday for her try out some yaks.
However I have ulterior motives: I’ve had my Hobie Outback for a year now and am wanting to get a Revo and start some salt fishing.  If I can convince her that the Outback is THE boat she needs then I can get the Revo!   Only thing is she likes to fly fish using dry flies.  I tell her “No problem, you just have to learn to side cast”.
So, while my wife is off to the ladies room I see James over at the Hobie area of the Paddlefest, reintroduce myself and tell him of my plan for the Revo.  A few minutes later my wife and I are looking through the different yaks and I see James over in the FeelFree area.  We go over and he tells my wife that he wants to get her into the right kayak for her type of fishing.  Plan On!  Or so I thought.  James tells her that the Lure 11.5 is the boat she needs to try.  What the hell… OK, maybe he is letting her try a slow paddle yak first and then will steer her over to try out the Hobie so she will see how superior they are.  Nope, he says the next boat she should try is the Jackson Kilroy and to compare it to the Lure.  I am starting to get disillusioned.
She tries takes out the Kilroy and finds the Lure more to her liking.  We finally get over to the Hobie area and tell Bird  she wants to take out the Outback and me the Revo.  “Wow, this is real nice… relaxed and peaceful, and easy to get around in” she says.  I smile and start feeling things come together.  Then “But I want to stand up and fly fish”  Sigh.  “What about just side casting?”  “No, I want to stand up”.  “But the Lure is a lot slower and you will have problems when it gets windy”.  “I think I need to go back and try the Lure again.”
She tries the Lure and thinks it is the boat for her.  Thanks a lot James!  At least he comes over to me and says ”Sorry about the Revo”
There is still hope.  I have cast some doubt and she now thinks we should rent the Lure and try it in different conditions before she makes up her mind.
Nice to meet your daughter, James.  She is special!

General Fishing Tips / Fishing During a Full Moon
« on: April 07, 2014, 08:35:45 AM »
My experience is that usually it's almost not worth fishing during the week of a full moon.  I usually end up working hard to catch a fish or being skunked.  Exceptions are salmon fishing in Alaska, where we always limit, or fishing off the rocks at Laguna Beach when I was a kid, we always caught lots of fish.

Do you guys have suggestions for catching fish during a full moon, or are your experiences different than mine?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Berryessa Fri 3/14

Thought I'd try and get my mojo on for BSS4.....FAIL!
Got to Cappell at 7:45, but being pretty much a noob it took an hour until I got the Outback set up for launching in a chilly 36 degrees.  Trolled for trout, cast plastics for bass, and soaked nightcrawlers for nary a bite.    Fish were metered at 20-30 feet but I could not entice any.  Water temp was 62.8 with a LOT of moss (algae?) floating in some areas and filling the fish finder screen.
No other  kayaks on the water. I talked to a couple of PB trout fishermen with similar results as me.  I also spoke with a couple of guys on a bass boat that said they were having an epic day with anything in shad colors working (I tried a shad color plastic with no luck) .

No fish, but a memorable day. The drive up the canyon at dawn was beautiful with the red bud in bloom and the soft green new leaves on the trees.   I saw lots of deer and some turkeys and quail from the kayak and I saw an eagle swoop down and fly away with a snake that was at least 6 feet long.  He had a hard time flying with it but wouldn't let it go.

Went fishing with my wife's cousin Paul for a a few days near Lewiston.  Fished two and a half days on the Trinity River casting roe for nary a bite. Saw a couple of dark salmon roll but that was it. Paul tried nightcrawlers to entice a trout but nothing.
For the last day we went to Lewiston lake for a few hours in the afternoon and finally had some luck.  I took my Outback out for the virgin fishing trip and caught some nice 11-12" rainbows trolling a small spoon with a nightcrawler.  Kept four, released a couple and a few escaped at the kayak because I forgot to bring the net. Paul caught a few from shore with salmon eggs.
Tomorrow they increase the release from Trinity Lake into the river from 450 cfm to 2800 cfm to help the Fall run salmon in the Klamath river survive. Should make for some good salmon fishing in the Klamath and Trinity this fall

General Fishing Tips / Lewiston Lake?
« on: July 31, 2013, 04:08:28 PM »
My wife's cousin is visiting and he would like to fish Lewiston Lake.
I am new to kayak fishing, he has done quite a bit of it in Virginia in a sit inside kayak on small rivers and inlets.

Any tips for fishing Lewiston Lake or other lakes in the area (Trinity, Whiskeytown, Kenswick)?

Introductions / Noob from Woodland

Hi All,
Geezerdom has been reached and I want to spend more time fishing.  In recent years I have spent way too much time and money at home wine making instead of fishing so this year I have decided to buy a kayak and go fishing instead.

Got a Hobie Outback and Garmin fish finder and spent a day at Berryessa trying to sort things out.  Lots of fun!

I have fished all my life and enjoy all types of fishing.  Just got back from a fantastic trip to Craig, Alaska.

I am looking forward to getting know the people here and learn the ins and outs of kayak fishing.

John
