Like others here, I used to be certified, mine was a wilderness first responder certification in about 1996 with recertifications until 2004. When I stopped doing guide work I got lazy & let it all lapse. Only thing I know now is that recommended compression#'s went up this year.
In a pinch I could at least do rescue breaths, & give compressions (hopefully without snapping off the victims little cartilage ribcage thingy). I still carry a mask in my pack.

As a teacher, I have to be certified.  I take a class every other year.

Ditto, except that it's been almost three years now so I should take a refresher course.  We're also AED trained here at the college, and have two AED units in the PhysEd quad.  Again, I need a refresher.  Thanks for reminding me!

One of our part-time PhysEd instructors is a Red Cross/Lifeguard/WSI certification instructor.  She's the one who certifies those here in the PhysEd division.  If you're interested in offering a class at Aquan I can ask her what her fees are.  I've been thinking about requiring all of the black belts in my club to go through a basic CPR course anyhow, so maybe I'll ask her what her group rates are even if you don't need her services.

CPR and basic first aid required annually for work.  Former EMT (long expired), Combat lifesaver in the military (also a long time ago).

Best bet.....Stay close to the Spider.

Joel and {insert your favorite NCKA'er's name here} were walking through the woods when out of nowhere a poisonous snake popped up and bit Joel right on his Johnson.

As Mooch collapsed to the ground, his companion whipped out his cell phone and called 911. "Help, help" he said, "my friend was just bitten on his Willy by a snake!" The operator tells him that emergency personnel can't possibly get to the woods in time to save Mooch, and if Joel is to live, he has to suck the venom out. The man hangs up and hurries back to Moocho Libre.

Joel looks up at his NCKA brother and whispers, "Well, what did the doctor say?"  "Sorry bro" says his pal, "looks like you're going to die."

Yep, Firefighter for twenty plus years. A few 'saves" here and there. I think the national average is still at about 3% for a successful resuscitation. Not good odds but better then 0%. Highly recommend cert for EVERYONE, you might save a family member someday.

Interesting that techniques have changed.  The recommendation does not foreclose "old school" mouth to mouth and compressions though.

They change things every year, they find that things we were doing were actually doing more harm than good ect ect...

This goes along with our recent protocol change in that if we come across a down person

( cardiac arrest with shockable rhythm ) we are to perform CPR with ventilations for 1 min before

we " ZAP " them. These are the Pros from Dover saying this stuff, but from my experience,

 electrocution ASAFP is best.

I guess reality is we have been doing this anyway, by the time you get everything ready CPR has been going for a min or more as it were.

I do think this is a Good recommendation ( Chest Compressions Only ), It's Crazy in the Field,

and if you can concentrate on one thing and do it well, that does sound best.

No surprise there.  Have read a few cases where breaking ribs does not mean deviation from standard of care

But be careful not to break that little bone off from the rib cage! Placement still matters.

I too, had to learn for the job I had at the time a couple years back.  But yeah, its been a couple years and I could use a refresher course.
