General Fishing Tips / Re: Which line/test for rock fishing?

I’m a double uni guy myself.

Also, because I’m newer to this I put about 100’ of 30# mono top shot. No reason other than it helps when I have to break off and start losing line I guess. Am I defeating the purpose of having braid by doing this? Sounds like 10-15’, swivel, then 3-5’ of more mono is the move if I’m reading your guys posts correctly

I’m wondering if the northern section of Fort Ross will be fishable close to shore. Saturday I’m going to take a look and do a little fishing from the rocks. I’ll post an update. Might be a window early in the a.m.

Thank you! That’s tremendous help.

General Fishing Tips / Most protected spots for Sunday
« on: July 14, 2023, 08:46:07 AM »
With conditions looking rough, anyone recommend any coastal spots for Sunday? I’m looking at Albion and Fort Ross. Gonna cliff fish if we pull up and it looks bad that morning.

Albion, Stay in the cove, lings will be there and safe paddling. Gotta love the opener. Fish all move in shallow. Cabs should be there too!

I’m too new to know if you’re just kidding here. Looking to hit up somewhere on Sunday and fish some cliffs if kayaking isn’t safe. Any tips? I’m down to drive to Albion if it really is protected. Passed it a bunch but never stopped.

Hey Scotty,

I can’t make it tomorrow but if you’re back out there on Sunday I’d see you there.

Thanks everyone. For those using a mono top shot, how long?

Today I’m considering Tomalas…
Could be my lucky day for a Halibut 🤞🏼as I have a current  Hali Skunk going I’d like to break.
Hav’nt heard of much action over there  but it’s only 45min from the house, it’s gonna get me on the salt and it is July,
Maybe it’s time to start the bite?🤞🏼

Scotty are you going today or Sunday?

Paul,
how are you at making Bait?

So I put on 50lb braid and 20lb mono. Wanted to do 30, but didn’t have it at the time. Might switch up now that I’m home and have it. It was a good combo for me last year.

I’m seeing conditions deteriorate as fast as I can refresh my web pages on them. I’d love to join you all at Albion if that’s the safe move. The only other idea I had was Van Damme.

Hey everyone, I got a new Okuma Cold Water reel with a short Trevala rod to take out on the kayak. My other set up (similar rod and reel) I am using 50lb braid with a 30lb mono leader. What are you all using? What’s best for rock fishing?

Hobbie has an official video showing Fish Finder wiring for Compass with a grommet kit (search Youtube). You should also consider where you want to store the battery (in hull or on deck) which will affect the wiring method.

Thank you! I found this and it was helpful.

I might miss spring season this year! Having too much fun on the water. Thanks for posting this. Personally, I hadn’t even considered using a goose gun for turkey. No need.

I’ve thought about this over the last few years. Do we really think the recreational fishing is causing the decline in fish? Or would it be more likely that commercial fishing is the main contributing factor here?

I do believe that recreational fishing should be regulated such that we have sustainable and thriving populations of all the native species we have on this coast. I also think that if we just focus on putting more restrictions on recreational take while commercial- both domestic and international- continue to overfish the ocean we’re fighting a losing fight and ignoring the elephant in the room.

Am I off here or missing something? I realize there are nuances to the halibut issue with them using the bay to spawn which is very accessible to our everyday Rec fisher.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I opted for the Lowrance Hook 2 4x. I know it's not top of the line, but I'm trying it out to see if it'l do what I need for now. I have this habit of spending the most money possible on stuff before I know what I'm doing, so this is a new move for me.

I just opened the box and discovered it came with a bullet transducer. All I need now is some info on wiring it up. Thankfully there is already a housing for the transducer and a hole for the wiring to come up through the hull behind the seat.

Are most of you right handers putting your fish finder on the right side?

Any practical tips and shit talking is welcome.  :smt008
