Very true statement. I have seen very large "manly" men run in fear over stupid little things. I am not sure how I would react to seeing a large squid especially if it wanted to touch me...what if it liked me??  :smt107 haha

These sure are funky weird looking things. I wonder if you could spear one if you saw it? Kind of odd. I bet they put up a great fight with a fishing rod.

A dive knife is a must for me after being tangled in the kelp in Timber cove and nearly shallow water black out after freeing myself. Freaky stuff...with out the knife I may not have came up at all!  :smt005

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Ocean Cove abs

Timber Cove is just south of the Lodge. You do access it from the RV campground. I think its like $7 per day. If its not real busy with the boat launching, he will let you drive and park right on the beach. I have been going there for a few years now and always bring abs in. 8"+ abs are common and my dad got two barely over 10" last year in less than ten feet of water! I don't have a kayak yet...but I am looking to change that after Paddle Fest. I do have a 12' Zodiac with a 40hp motor that just flat out screams!!  Its almost too fast, but when the ocean acts up it is certainly nice to be able to get off the water in a hurry. I have spearfished in the cove with tanks and taken some nice lings and spotted some huge abs. Just finding the same shelves with out tanks can be a bit of a bugger

Sounds like you had a great trip. I have never dove Ocean Cove. I often think about it, but continue to Timber Cove where I know my way around. Last time at Timber I did about the same as you and was back in the truck in about half an hour with a limit. One trip I even found a shelf that had legal abs almost stacked on each other. I took a limit on two breaths. Did you see any lings on your trip?

I have seen fishing reports where they are catching these with hook and line. They are like an octopus in that in the center of the legs(at the head) they have a beak which they can give a nasty bite. They teeth that they talk about are very small barbs on their suckers. Sounds like a kick to catch them though.

MolBasser,
I will definitely go to paddlefest! It sounds like a perfect place to get set up! I look forward to meeting people and seeing what this is all about. Del Valle is a pretty good reservoir. Last time my girlfriend and I went we caught 7 cats(18" was the smallest) and a small striper. All on chicken liver just off the bottom. I would love to go fishing with you if you are interested. I would like to go with someone who knows what they are doing to watch and learn. Let me know in advance and I will make sure to not work the OT at work.

General Fishing Tips / Which kayak??
« on: September 07, 2006, 08:28:46 AM »
I am getting into fishing/diving from a kayak. I am 5'9" and 135#. Any advise on a brand/make of kayak? I was thinking of the Fish and Dive...but it seems really large for a guy my size. I was also told to look into the Marauder. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
