Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Wetsuit suggestions???
« on: May 26, 2014, 06:31:34 PM »
I use a Picasso kelp camo 7m and LOVE it. I have yet to get cold. I actually use it for free diving as well as scuba. It's about 10+ years old and still awesome.

Can anyone suggest a cheap place to purchase the Wheeleez/Rolleez carts? Also, is the larger version a better bet for a Cobra Marauder? Any info would be greatly appreciated!  :smt006

I ordered the larger wheeleez from Hook 1 and am now anxiously waiting. I did get it for 185 + a 10% discount. Thank you for all of your input and I hope to see you on the water soon!! Yaaa!! No more carrying over my head  :smt013

That seems to be what I am reading, and I figure that since I like to carry gear for all occasions :smt002 the larger ones would hold the weight better. I am trying to slim everything down though. Thank you for your response.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: section 29.15 (f) violation

Many of you may have heard this story already.  I posted it on Spearboard a week or 2 ago and it raised a real ruckus with 4500 guys looking over the post and 111 responses.  It also raised a big fuss on the CenCal freedive list.  I wanted to post it here too and let you know what happened.  It will ultlimately be decided by a judge but read the exerpt below and just dot your i's and cross your t's when you are out diving.  I have an email for Lt. Steve Riske of the DFG which basically states that the charge is bogus if I had my 7 inch gauge in my kayak, float, tube or on my person, which I did.  But I was cited anyway.  Read below for the full story.

I have been ab diving since I was 12 years old. I got a ticket today. The first one ever, and I couldn't believe it. The kelp is very thick and there was a large ground swell. I was out with my kayak alone and diving fairly deep. I had a light in my left hand and only my 9 inch ab gauge in my right. I was measuring abs and when I would find a 9 I would pop it off with my hand. I took only 3. Tagged them and filled out the card as instructed. I had a bar and 7 inch gauge in my kayak, in the same bag I put the abs in. The officer watched me dive and fish for several hours and then met me on shore and wrote me ticket for not "carrying" a 7 inch gauge even though I had a 7 inch gauge and bar in the kayak. He said I had to DIVE with a 7 inch caliper measuring device. It is not good enough to have it in your float or kayak. Just wanted you all to learn from my misfortune. I couldn't believe it. It makes absolutely no sense to me. I have to appear in court in Dec.  The Warden's name was Mead and he was very polite and professional.  I just think this was an error on his part.  I had the proper equipment with me and I showed it to him.
Dave

I can't believe that they write such bogus citations. It is a waste of time and money for everyone. I tried to turn in six guys last year for taking less than 7" abs using tanks. By the time the warden got there they did not "have" any abs in there possesion and stated that they had been pleasure diving and not harvesting abs. Not so much as a warning was given, but the warden did search my vehicle after I told him i was diving for abs. I was also issued a trespassing violation for walking on the side of HWY1. He said that there is no easement and that Sea Ranch owned it. It kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth for the good wardens out there.

I was thinking about just baiting up some squid on the smaller hooks and fishing Del Monte Beach. I have seen dabs in there while scubadiving. I will let you all know how it goes. Should be fun just to get out in the water.

General Fishing Tips / Sand Dabs

I have never fished for dabs and the gf and I will be in Monterey in the next couple of weeks. I am not even sure if we will get a chance to get in the water, but...I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for how to catch some dabs? I am not even sure as to how to rig or what bait to use. Any info would be great!!

I say the penalties are way to small for such an a$$. He should lose everything he was using at the time of the crime such as his vehicle, boat, ect...

Kayaks / Re: Dangling feet in great white areas
« on: October 17, 2007, 12:06:06 AM »
I live on the NorCal Coast,

Ten or so years ago a surfer literally lost his head to a great white about ten miles North of Fort Bragg.   Sorry to be so gruesome, and it's not funny at all, but personally I would not dangle my feet in the water up here on the open ocean.

sincerely,
-HobieSport

Just 2-3 years ago a Abalone diver had his head bitten off and spit out. I have dove in a cage at the Faralons with the whites and they are absolutely amazing. I do dangle my feet in the water and go with the odds topic. No trouble yet. I do agree that the sea lions pose a greater risk though.

scubamike maybe as long as you're not carrying rod&reel you're okay? can't imagine them cutting off transport options A lot of divers get there by boat

Can you spearfish from your yak still, or do you have to do a beach entry?
