Kayaks / Re: Fantasy kayaks

I always wanted a clear yak. I absolutely love sight fishing, especially in the salt. Plus the yak would break the chop resulting in a clear view below. Nothing like seeing tons of RF on the rig and they aren't biting!

Yea lifetime for de-lamination of the gore-tex. Doesn't cover the latex seals or the patching for me at least. They also charged me for the wash fee and I washed it twice before I sent as per instructions.

Bought a GFER around three years ago and unfortunately I can't recommend kokatat goretex stuff. I too use my gear heavily and quite simply this suit is not intended for fishing/utility work. The breathability is great and the zippers kick ass but the fabric is far to easy to puncture and the seals rot fast.

When sent back for the first go round the charge was $140 for a new neck seal and wrist gaskets in addition to patching the suit. I wasn't too upset about that but it was only 1.5 years old. I am very familiar with 303 and use it often and still my seals are junk yet again after 1.5 years. In addition both feet leak and the crotch is starting to leak again which is why I sent it back the first time.

Disclaimer: I use the shit out of my drysuit year round.

Safety First / Re: wet suit or Dry suit
« on: September 09, 2014, 01:26:32 PM »
Dry suit with proper base layering. I would be cautious around kokatat products though. Having owned the GFER for around 4 years now I can say that it isn't very durable and the gaskets dry rot fairly quickly. I get about 1.5 years out of the gaskets. I do 303 them constantly. The gaskets on my Extrasport semi dry top are original and 6 years old. The gore tex also punctures easily though it breathes exceptionally well and isn't stiff at all. I just wish the suit would go 4 years for me between servicing.

Disclaimer: I fish 60-70 trips per year and wear the drysuit 99% of the time.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Fishing Rod Survey

Nope cord. Like tuna cord, seine twine ect. I use seeker butt cord myself with a 30" grip. When installed it's solid so all vibrations are felt very easily. Also comes out of the rod holder real smooth.

Saltwater- 6-8', line ratings from 10# to 50#. Most important thing is to have a selection of rods for drifting, trolling and jig fishing. I like glass rods for all but jigging. Agree with GB2 that the fuji concept alconites are the go to for guides. Butt length is personal preference but a long and short butt option would be nice. Also consider cord handles/deckhand style grip. I prefer cord to any other grip and enjoy the ability to move the reel to any position I prefer.

Yeah Craig that can be done for sure! My brother Adam (swimbait maker) just moved houses so he is in the process of setting up his plastic pouring gear but he should be on-line midweek.

Awesome man! Glad you guys hooked up on some fish with the lures. Great meeting you and your brother too. Always fun to talk fishing with people that enjoy it as much as we do.

We fished sws yesterday but it was really slow. Managed ling limits though with two 30" and two 25" and a small verm. Pics and video are on facebook and I have no clue how to get them here lol. Big lings ate the 7.5" ringed swimbait in red and the smaller ones ate the 6in ringed in red.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Kayak landing net for salmon
« on: August 22, 2014, 10:40:39 AM »
I was gifted a Lininger and absolutely love it. Used Frabils in the past until I forgot my paddle at sws and attempted to use the net. It worked great until the end of the pier and promptly broke completely. I have no doubt the Lininger would stand up to paddle use.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Sabiki rod and rig advice
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:37:40 PM »
I use a backup rod for the sabiki so if needed it can be used as the real deal troller or moocher. A rig full of macs would likely break a sabiki rod too. The tangles and hassle are just part of the deal.

I only bait fish occasionally for salmon and worrying about bait for your second salmon is a non issue. Always have frozen and catching the first one is hard enough. I don't trim my rigs because I'm lazy and with 6, loosing a few hooks is no big deal. Tip with squid if the bait is scarce but most of the time it's not necessary. I use a 4-6oz iron on the bottom for weight.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Rod for Jigging on my Shimano Symetre 3000fl

I like graphite/fiberglass composite rods for swimbaits and jigging, so I would say Calstar GX7 or GX8 or the more affordable Seeker stealth in a #15-30 line rating. Spinning reels are totally fine for jigging and if you are looking for the most inexpensive rod go with a Shakespeare of your choice in a medium or medium light action.

For 3/4- 2oz lures I fish a GX7 and Penn slammer 260 with great results.

Nice pipe jig man. One thing you may try is hammering it flat as you can with the weights in it. That should make it swim a bit. Also try adding a puked up octopus or a squid to the assist hook. Good luck and post up the fish!

General Talk / Re: Be careful where you paddle!

Most definitely would not have done anything different with CCW. The guy was just being a dick and I never felt threatened to the point of bodily injury. Also the odds were greatly in his favor weapon and cover wise.

I  and another NCKA were yelled at this year while kayaking on the lower Salinas river by duck hunters in sticks and reeds  piled duck blind...told to get off the river cause "they" were trying to hunt...told us we were on a closed river-had not been closed yet- and then later we got some radio traffic from another two NCKA members that were coming behind us down the same stretch and got some stray shotgun pellets bounced off one of their kayaks...I think they called them in to dfg and when dfg arrived the hunters had ran away.... pretty mean sounding idiot type that yelled at us..I was unarmed and he was armed and not 50 feet away yelling at us and ready to start trouble....bullshit

Can confirm I was the one shot at. Wasn't too fun and it really pissed me off. Short story time...

Basically I was trolling through the area on my way to meet up with a few NCKA guys I knew were closer to the mouth of the river. So I'm paddling along maybe 50 yds in front of my brother, on the opposite shore of the hunters, and I hook up. Ok all is going well except the asshole shooting literally right by me as I could hear the shot in the air. I fight the fish and land it, a 20"ish striper and after about 10 or so minutes I'm on my way to the mouth of the lagoon to make the meet up. For whatever reason I look back to the hunter across the lagoon, maybe 75 yds away, and I see a huge plume of water right in front of his decoy set. I knew what was coming and I remember thinking "oh shit look down" and I could hear the shot landing all around me and hitting the yak. It didn't have the force to penetrate anything but was clearly done intentionally as no ducks were flying. I exchanged a few choice words with the guy and paddled out 50 yds and called the DFW immediately. They arrived quickly but the guy bugged out and they never got him. Lost a few hours of fishing time but my brother stayed in the area and managed 4 fish and I landed 2 when I made it back to the spot.

First mistake was bringing a rod to a gun fight :smt044. Second was not leaving the area when the guy that shot at me was shooting so close to me. I was hooked up though so... lesson learned.

As a lifelong hunter it really pissed me off that the guy had done that as it was obviously not an accident. I was in a red T160 in a half red dry suit so there's no way he didn't see me. The DFW took the complaint very seriously and were there in 20 min and that impressed me. In the end I will just stay west of the bridges during duck season and avoid the situation all together. No winners when someone gets shot. Was also going to post to NCKA but decided to cool off for a day an literally the next day the river was closed due to the drought.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing During a Full Moon
« on: April 08, 2014, 03:03:44 AM »
Like Clayman I kept a log and noticed a striking difference between the phases. Since I primarily fish lingcod, and only log ocean trips, my experience is admittedly limited to RGC type fish.

Through the log I noticed the bite really shuts down for the week of the full moon. For me a waxing "half moon" or 1st quarter moon through the full moon was almost always an off bite scenario. A new moon was by far the best, but as Clayman points out cloud cover has a strong positive effect on the bite.

This season I plan on taking some night fishing trips during the July/August/Sep full moons to see if they are feeding at night.
