Title: CANCELED!!! Kelsey Bass Ranch June 4th
Post by: Danglin on May 09, 2011, 03:56:08 PM
So, it's been a year,

(Actually, it's been since November 09... but that's the details)        anyway...

Kelsey Bass Ranch!!!   :white

This place is Kool, and it's really Great that Jon Kelsey wants to have us back...  Hopefully after this event we will still be welcome as I expect this event to be huge...

I'm inviting the Veterans Admin from 3 to 4 different logistics, The Warrior Transition Unit from Sacramento and will be personally inviting wounded vets who have fished with us before...

I'm sure in the end, we will have enough room for all that want to help and we will need a ton of help as we need to basically reinvent the wheel on this one...

we need to bring every kayak / gear and feed probably somewhere over a hundred people...

The really kool thing is Jon is letting us camp overnight on the 3rd, arriving late afternoon... Wow...  :smt004

Now here is the thing... I do need to keep a cap on this thing and basically, those who have helped in the past or have expressed interest in helping have priority...

I'm not trying to make this a exclusive thing, but I do need to respect Mr. Kelsey's generosity and not over do it...

so we will just see how this plays out, how many vets were getting and who wants to help...

I really think we have to pitch in a little for grub on this one.... we pretty much have exhausted the local marts for help in this area and the corporate angle has failed miserably and I'm tired of pounding the pavement for donations...

don't have time... so $5 to $10 bucks a person should cover it and I'll hit up National HOW for the rest...

Kayakjack....  what's on the menu and please don't say shrimp!!! and yes you will be on the water...

That's all for now, more to come and post up if your interested and again we'll see how this plays out...

  Thanks      :smt006

*special note*....  HOW events policy is a no alcohol or drugs allowed....

A simple beer may sound extreme as not being allowed, and the troops may even request it, but you must realize that many of theses Brave Men and Women are going through the time of their lives and some quite possibly are on a med cocktail that if a simple beer is drank, could kill them...

Not to mention that if a Staff Sargent or the Army, VA or HOW should find out we gave out a Beer...

We're done, and they have shut down a chapter already.... SOooooooo

We are not going there and that includes the campout the night before as I hope to have some of the troops camping with us....   :camp

Right on Jack!!!  Ya your right about the Foster Farms, they said no at Del Valle because of location...

might have to prove it by picking up locally, but I do have the community contact and will check it out...

Was over at a grand opening for dick's sporting goods this morning. they were selling cheap Mitchell 6'6 M Spinning combos for $10 each, so i picked up four and enough 8lb line for each.  $45 out the door and i'll count it as a tax deduction!

These are going to be donated towards Nor Cal HoW!

A little over 2 weeks to get this puppy off the ground....

many people have talked to me about the event, but it's most important for me and Frankfishing to see it in writing here as to what and who your bringing...

I really don't see a problem at this point in closing it off to participants or volunteers, but again it is important that you post up here as we can get a count and figure this out pronto...

I have 40 hot dogs, Raydon is bringing some ribs, and this may be the way we do it...

little this and little that, figure what we have coming and I'll go buy the rest... if ya just want to drop $5 to $10 bucks in the donation box, that would be great too...

I think we are looking at around 50+/- wounded vets...

Kayakjack let me know what your thinking....

Camping is confirmed for the night before arriving late afternoon on the 3rd...

 More to come.....

Thanks Again Everyone...  I know what it takes for me to do this, and anyone taking time and effort to do this is very much appreciated and when you see what it does for these Brave Men and Women...

There is no cost or effort too great to do what were doing for them....

  I know I'm hooked.....

 See ya soon...

Hey Don, I was thinking we should probably have some greens, fruit and starch to balance out the meal. It can also get pretty damn hot down there so ice cold water, tea or soda would be good. Do you know what time they are coming yet? Is he cooking the ribs on the barbecue? How many ribs? How many people altogether? I can set-up my camp kitchen and make breakfast for the crew. What about dessert? I am getting hungry. I will think about things today at work and post up tonight.

Don, count me for 2 people (me + my dad). Not camping
I only have 1 kayak but can haul another one or two from the bay area or the Modesto area (I'll be in Patterson the night before).
I'll bring a cooler of water & sodas or if the food guys find there's something else needed, I'll pick it up.

If you guys need something else let me know, i live pretty close to the pond.

Right now its just me. I'll be camping the night before. possibly just sleeping in the car rather than pulling out the tent.

I am bringing my revo and my inflatable (i'll probably be fishing out of the i9).
enough rods for my two kayaks
+4 extra rods
+enough lures and hooks and sinkers and etc for at least 2-3 people.

I am also working on getting some more kayaks, we will see about that.

I can also bring an extra ez up if you need it.  If you need some more food items i can buy them, otherwise i will just toss some money into the pot.

I'll bring my big ice chest filled with ice, in addition to the previously mentioned extra kayak + the gear to get a vet OTW and fishing, plus spares.

bmb, yes, that would be good, thank you

All the rest sounds good too guys and we will wait and see on the food thing, couple things working...

just has to get a $100 handicap restroom out there, Hopefully the VA or HOW will help with that...  ouch!!!

Had to do it, the 2 sad portables out there are pretty bad, even though, the disabled vets did not complain,  the Therapist did!!!

Looks like we could use more volunteers so post up if ya like to help,

For sure Victor, You can ride down with me and Ron. My buddy Ron is a vet and he is going to come down and help. I have an easy up as well. Will bring food and ice chest. I may be able to do a collection with our local club to cover the porta potty cost. Let me know.

Victor, we will be coming down the 3rd and we will camp out that night.

That is really nice of you to offer and if ya want to help with food and stuff, donate what is comfortable....

The porta potty, well I would like to think that is to be kicked up to the VA or HOW National and we will do what we can, even if the VA, HOW and us kick in on it, cuts the cost down to size...

*another note...

This lake is catch and release... I'm thinking that there may be some who just want to bank fish... please bring spinner baits... these work pretty well out there and of course easy to use...  all hooks are to be barbless, just do what ya can on that with the spinner baits, but any worm hooks or crank baits have to be barbless...

sorry,my internet wasn't working last nite.  O.k I am thinking big ass green salad, buttload of cajun corn on the cobb, pasta salad of some sort, chips and my homemade salsas and of course, some sort of animal flesh or carcas. Can anyone volunteer to make a decent pasta salad in large quantity? I can also make breakfast burrittos in the am. We could also use volunteers to bring some desserts. I will post more ideas after work today.

Roger-that Frank. I'll cancel the rum-cake. :smt003  I like the idea of potlucking this thing together.I believe there is a big wood/charcoal grill available on-site and i can bring my industrial camp kitchen with 3-burner griddle and assorted prep and serving equipment. It sounds like Don has some hotdogs and raydon some ribs. How many ribs? Do we need dryrub and sauce for the ribs? I have a great homemade dry-rub. If necessary we may want to supplement the protein department with some marinated boneless chicken breasts. I can make cajun corn on the cobb butt we will need about 30-40 ears of corn. I am hoping someone can step up and make a big batch of potato or pasta salad. We will also need a bunch of mixed leafy greens,carrots,cucumber,re-onion and several bottles of dressing for the green salad. Next we need some fresh fruit. Maybe some watermelon, oranges, cherries or whatever. I can bring homemade salsa but we need both tortilla and potato chips. Last but not least we need desserts. cakes, pies, cookies etc. Oh yeah, drinks and ice. A variety of sodas, water or lemonade or ice-tea. So how does this sound? We are definately open to suggestions and ideas. Who can bring what? If you want make something not listed that is cool too.

We are waiting to hear from Foster Farms and there might be a delicatessen that is going to help, hopefully know more by Tuesday...

The salad sounds good, fruit, I do remember a Heavy Fly presence there, I'm not sure how much food we want to open to the bugs... I don't remember the salad or the corn moving much at the last event

The corn may be a bit labor intensive too,,, lets focus for now on the salsas, chips, hotdogs and chicken...

a large pasta salad does sound like the ticket, the VA is bringing some drinks, but they only have budget for the vets and even that is quite limited...

we are paying for the porta potty...

Damm, thought that was a no-brainer for the VA...  :smt012 no worries,,,

I want this to be simple food wise... we have many volunteers who want to help with the cooking but do not kayakfish... so KayakJack....

The morning burrito thing sounds great, but for lunch, I would like you to be on the water and lets keep whatever we do simple so it's just handed off to the shore volunteers...

I'm off to the Medic tomorrow so probably won't be able to check back in till Sunday...

Great Stuff everyone and keep it coming.....

Hi All   :smt006

Here is where we are at....

Approx 40 to 50 Vets, some will be camping with us...

Paddleboy is bringing up around 12 or so kayaks, with everyone bringing what they said they will bring, we should be good enough, along with a few power boats, shore fishing and going out in shifts, we'll be fine...

Food again is a disappointment and further brings to the point of I'm tired of trying to get these corporations to help and also hitting up the Mom and Pops for everything, it's also incredibly time consuming to write these letters and jump through hoops to just get a

" No.. "     :smt009

Times are tough, So, we have some donations coming and that's great and if everyone could just throw $5 or so to the donation box, that will get us close enough...

We still are going need to buy chicken and more Dogs along with buns and condiments etc, chips, drinks/water and if someone wants to take on a pasta salad...  might ask some of the other shore volunteers if they can handle that one...

  KayakJack...

Can we expand The Breakfast Burrito thing ?

The VA will be showing up around 9:30, it would be nice to get them a quick burrito. Hopefully we can set this up so the shore volunteers can take over that part of the operation and get you on the water with the vets...

Let me know ...

and everyone ...  VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!

MARK YOUR GEAR!!!!!!!    everything gets really mixed up in the launch area and it is a long day, towards the end, your just going to want to find your gear quick and pack it...

so MARK YOUR GEAR...

another thing were going to try is more than one launch location, should help with keeping gear separated...

  More to come soon....

I can't wait to get the new Pro Anglers in, those things are bad ass! We will also have all 12 paddles, Pfd,s a bunch of plastic baits, a few extra spinning rod setups, and some cash to kick down for food. Am I missing anything?

Don. just a reminder:  paper plates.forks, cups, drinks, ice, serving bowls and spoons. Hopefully,Mrs.Kelsey will be bringing the chairs and tables again. Some sort of fresh fruit or vegetable would be admirable if you have the time and resources. Do we need more volunteers? If so, maybe we should post a help wanted in the classifieds. I was under the impression that we had plenty of people. I am sure we could draft a few more from the membership. Imo, it is important to make sure all the rods are rigged and the boats are ready when they get there.

Here ya loud and clear...

 we have paperplates, cups etc...

we have a good amount of people who will be volunteering on the shore....

what is just a bit concerning to me is how many of us will actually be on the water with the vets... one on one, will probably not work here, maybe more like  1 guide 2 vet ratio...

or going out in shifts

apples, oranges, bananas, probably a good idea, but not making a salad out of it,.. those bugs are fierce,

being we are getting there the day before, and getting to try some fishing that night... we should have a good idea what will work and be able to get that set up by mid-morning on the day of the event....

We are going to need s few more things, but i think Frankfishing is going to do the major Costco run...

Let me check with with him on what his schedule is and I might assign a few more things...

I know we could use a 100 count of plates, bowls, forks, knives, spoons,

we could also use between 50 to 100 count of fruit, apples, oranges, bananas etc..

let me know if someone wants to get that and I'll reimburse you at the show

There's a lot to keep up with.

Barbless, and no Senkos, good to know.  Check!

Not to meddle, obviously you guys know what you're doing here, but if I may be so bold, why not simplify?  = focus on finger foods, burritos, actual fruit, things that can be eaten while otw.  And if people must be civilized, I can bring extra camp plates if anyone needs em, who needs paper plates and trash?

Just a thought.

Still in for an extra yak+gear+big cooler full of ice and drinks+pies

Anything else needed???  I will donate if we're coming up short anywhere.

Yeah, my wife was telling me the same thing - 40% chance of rain and 15mph winds.  A little rain will be ok - but I sure hope the wind stays down. Last time we were there the wind blew and blew and it was really difficult for the vets to fish in that.

It was really windy at home over the Memorial day weekend, hope it settles down by this weekend.

Friday just looks awesome...  :smt004

but the different weather sites are showing some sort of low moving in on Saturday...

I'm going to check and get a better understanding of what the VA is bringing us in the way of wounded warriors.

This will be mostly patients of VA Therapist of the different clinics with in the VA, ... all wars, TBI, PTSD, Poly Trauma Unit, amputees...

we also are looking at a few from the Warrior Transition Unit, and these guys are strong walking wounded and possibly camping with us...  but the majority are coming from the VA on Saturday after a long bus ride from Santa Clara County,

If we were to have rain, wind and cold, ( Saturdays Forecast showing lower 60's, showers... 10k to 15k wind )

 That's a bad mix...

I'll get back to ya guys...

Title: Re: Kelsey Bass Ranch June 4th
Post by: Danglin on June 01, 2011, 09:23:48 AM

We are Kayakfishermen,  they are war Veterans,,,

 We Fish...

We have at least 7 coming from the WTU with a few of those camping with us,

that is enough right there to make a very comfortable and worthy outing...

we'll see about the VA...

stayed tuned as things are changing and we may not have as many vets to serve on this one...
Title: Re: Kelsey Bass Ranch June 4th
Post by: Danglin on June 01, 2011, 11:37:03 AM
It looks as thought the VA is backing out of this one...

That lightens the load considerably as now it looks as though we are going to have 7 or so active duty wounded soldiers and at least one with his son...

Kinda brings this down to the type of outing we should be doing in the first place as to make these more of a intimate, peaceful outing...

anyway, that makes the food thing much more manageable and we do not need as many kayaks...

were still not %100 confirm on all the VA logistics canceling, but that is the way it's looking right  now. They are in meetings all day so were having trouble communicating...

so keep tuned and we will be able to figure out what we need by tonight and tomorrow...

  Thanks Guys

Roger that.  Thanks for the notice, and for everything you do, Fellas.  Next time.

Too bad we couldn't get the word out to the interested vets to just show up at any NCKA event and we'll have yaks for em.  I'd sit out, if I had to to get a vet OTW with the crew.  It would be an honor.

Like Earth Day, HOW is a great idea, but it really should be every day.  Hope that makes sense.
