Adding to the chorus of Trevala fans here... I've been very happy with my MH rod, caught rockfish, lingcod, and some good sized halibut on it. Handles jigging heavy lures well but also has been sensitive enough for me to feel when rockfish are nibbling at it.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Transducer Questions
« on: May 12, 2021, 01:26:18 PM »
I've got the Salty too, and I had to get a custom mount for my Garmin transducer since the recessed hull space is a bit funky and wouldn't fit with the standard mount. I guess that's beside the point though...

I wouldn't worry too much about it, these things are tough. Short of rinsing it down with fresh water after use, I've it mostly alone and it's held up well. Beach launching shouldn't be an issue. If you want the ultimate level of protection, the Scotty mounts are a good option, but they'll cause more drag in the water when using them.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Looking for a fish finder. What's good?

I use a Garmin Striker 4 Plus. It's the model with the ClearVu system, but I never use it. I prefer to run it split screen with the traditional chirp image and the map. Worked pretty well for me so far!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Favorite rock fish lures

I'll use different jigs, swimbaits, and stuff I've tied myself while I'm out there, but I've honestly had the most luck using the cheap Pline lingcod white squid rigs. It's a running joke with my buddies that these plastic squid are the only thing I can apparently catch fish with... doesn't make sense to me because I'll use other rigs with fake squid but for some reason, this particular one does the trick.

Introductions / Newbie-Santa Cruz
« on: May 10, 2021, 02:39:04 PM »
Hi all!

Lurked around here for a while, finally decided to go ahead a make a profile...

After living a few years by the bay to give myself some time to try and overcome my fear of sharks, I decided to give kayak fishing a shot. I got my first kayak early last year and made it a habit to go out as often as I could to build my paddling muscles and fishing patience. Now over a year later with some nice fish in the freezer and a few shark encounters behind me, I'm still fishing, so I'm guess I'm in it for the long haul now.

You'll catch me most weekends (and some weekday mornings) heading out of the Santa Cruz harbor in search of some quality butts, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming season to make full use my recent Old Town Salty purchase. Thanks for all the tips, y'all, and good luck to ya!

-Caleb

*Pic is of my PB 34 inch halibut. To this day, it haunts my dreams and I won't rest until I catch its bigger brother*
