The best bet and only way chovies will stay alive is water replacement. The bubbles from the air pump will stick to the chovies and stress them dead . Sometimes you are better off using fresh dead if thats all you got. The general rule of thumb is a 5 to 7 minute cycle for chovies if I recall. If you go to live bait larry's site it has all the theories and techniques so you can be a live bait pro.

As a former rep for Fishtraps I am sold on them.  I generally use 5" traps with 1 to 4 oz heads depending on the conditions. For colors I like channel island chovy,midnight chovy and gost shrimp. On a good day I can usually worm up almost all vermilion and coppers. I dont jig them up and down much but put them on the bottom and worm them slow or maybe a twitch or 2. For this you need ideal conditions.
