After reviewing the website and watching some of the videos, I think this trip is possible. For small boats and kayakers it is more about finishing than winning the race. They do a first day shake-out from Pt. Townsend to Victoria, so that is a good test. There are two other check points along the way. They require/issue tracking devices, etc.. Looks like people that are in small boats and kayaks typically wait out the worst weather camping on shore.

Most of it is the inside passage where fast currents and wind waves would probably be more of a factor than ocean swell.
The narrows seems harrowing - I'm not sure how you could time it to avoid the strong tidal currents at kayak speed. Even going with a strong current seems like it could be bad.
I would try to peg lots of potential beach landings/campsites ahead of time, making sure there is room above high tide.
Seems like an extra drive would make sense if possible. 15 - 20 days seems like a lot to expect out of one without issues.

You need to bring a bear canister for sure for food storage. I could probably lend you mine. One will not typically hold 18 days worth of food, unless you eat only oatmeal/freeze dried, so maybe 2?
If you see a grizzly, I would get on the yak to the water (but don't run). If it's a black bear (they can be brown) you can probably scare away, but even those might be aggressive up there.
As for fishing - it looks like all Canadian waters . You might have more time to shore fish if you are having to wait out the weather.

As far as TI AKAs go, a friend and I had one of the ties snap outside the Golden Gate and with the Ama swinging away, I made him grab it and it was like a Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin scene with him stretched between the boat and the Ama with his belly touching the water. Funny but harrowing.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kill Bag Recommendations?
« on: May 15, 2024, 06:32:26 PM »
I got a Feel Free from I think CCK. It was cheaper than a Hobie and has an inside removable bag that keeps the insulated bag clean. I place plastic ice packs/blocks between the liner and the insulated outside. No meltwater to leak in my car. But I usually keep fish on the stringer and transfer to the cooler bag for the ride home. The ice blocks are stored in a smaller cooler with my beer/food until needed. The bag has fit up to a 37" halibut.

If a sea lion ever dumps me, I will probably bring the bag out on the yak more often.

I have been using my model Y to save gas and climate change when I use my Lynx, but will not put my Outback on it. For that I have a 2010 Rav4.

Older CRVs and Rav4s had the side swing door which is great for accessing the back if a kayak is on the roof. It helps when I need to get the dog out without moving the yak.
When I researched it, the RAV4 in 2010 and 2011 model years were supposed to be more reliable than similar looking 2007-2008 years as far as oil burning goes. Admittedly I think the CRVs might have a better feel of the road but they switched away from the side swing door earlier.
Subies have that pesky head gasket issue... $$$.

I'm catching up on work. I'm eying Monterey or FR for Friday or Saturday. A report on the squid action would be appreciated.

Sorry I had to miss it, but hopeful for next year!

Sorry to hear that Mark, hope you get some better luck tomorrow.

It was a good day.
Not for those poor fish you fish killer you!  :smt002
Nice stringer!
What are your favorite recipes for RF vs Lingcod? (not details, just general)

Thanks for the report. I hate getting skunked while others are catching. In the rain would suck even more.
I discovered the "secret launch" on my own once and posted a pic on here and the elders did not like it so I took it down.  It uses private docks so in theory the owner could deny access but I think a posted sign indicates that it is public access (that was probably required by BCDC during the development application). But I don't know. There is plenty of shoreline access next to that spot so it seems like they could install a more public dock or ramp, eliminating any issues.

Great video! Demonstrates the nuances of timing vs hesitation.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Descender Weight
« on: May 01, 2024, 03:05:02 PM »
Has anyone tested retrieving what might be a larger fish at slower retrieval from deeper water? I will try and report when the time arises.

I have not had issues with barotrauma at inshore  because most of my inshore fishing in a kayak is usually no more than 80 ft in places I frequent around the Monterey bay
According to this PDF from the DFG on barotrauma: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=36345

Myth: Reeling a fish in slowly prevents barotrauma.
Fact: Rockfish cannot acclimate to the pressure drop even when reeled in slowly.

That is a very informative handout on barotrauma.
I'm wondering how slowly they factored on reeling up. When I hook a small fish sometimes I will really take my time bringing it up, with several pauses at different depths. This does cut into fishing time. But if even several minutes does no good, then it's probably better to get them up and then back down quickly.

Sounds like I might be a little light in my weights if I get a large Yellow Eye deep. The one I descended on 12 oz was only about 50'.

I've descended fish with only 8oz, so I think 12oz should work for the majority of fish. After the first 10ft they compress quite a bit. Most of my descended fish were small gophers or Coppers, so not a large volume of gas.  The one 21" yellow eye took awhile to get down. Worst case you could double a 10 or 12oz ball if it's not going down.

According to state data it's only 69% full. So someone must have built those structures in the wrong spot.

That’s a nice board. Unfortunately it doesn’t float. I had to repair my plastic folder after last year’s SWS landing. We’ll see how long it lasts.
