My previous and present compassion to Adam stands, from what iv'e read and seen you (Adam) have coped with this better than i could ever hope to.  know it or not I also feel bonded because you let a newbe tag along with you and and provided a welcome.  That's was awsome for a novice who knew he was in the triangle (a reallly good spot in the corner, that's getting better as the elaphant seal population does the same).
"shock and awe shark shields". Do they have merrit on this thead?
We survive more attacks than seals and fish because we use our heads to escape and have companions to assist during and after an attack.  If my family or friend was getting attacked and i wa close buy in a yak i would wish to stop the shark thoroughly.  How or if that could done is debatable.

There is the issue of legality but i think i'd prefer the small chance of loosing a finger or puttting a hole in my yak to being cut and crushed in the devels teeth.  :smt002
I vote for "shock and awe" shark shields   :smt071  but even with that they always have the element of surprise!
For real or not?

Maybe it's time for a new kind of shark shield. How about M100's with waterproof wicks and a 9mm glock.  :smt004

Hey Adam,
WOW, what an experience, I'm super glad you didn't get tangled up in its teeth and you can reflect without physical injuries.  I'm sure having your family and friends will help.  You may remember me, you helped me measure a just leagal Cab at bean hollow the weekend before "pay it forward".
Just a thought.... consider having a bite mark expert examine your Yak (bet they would love too, at no cost).  That may confirm the size and also may shed light on what type of attack this was.  It seems very similar to Dan's attack in 2006 or 2007.  I'm no expert but from what i've read both these attacks seem like "test bites".  The truly visious nature of an areal assault or a bite and shake untill a mouthfull is sawed off would have done more damage.  It's also in line with research that suggest whites will "test bite" boats due to the electrical impulses.  Both of these attacks were at the bow right were ff electronics are stored. I'm asuming both yaks were running FF'ers.

Safety First / Re: My Good Deed for the Day
« on: August 02, 2010, 04:10:04 PM »
I'm guilty of safety negligence, being out there alone and taking a dunk to boot, but that was before a member told me about this sight, I now have a new perspective.  Like to believe they didn't know better and hopefully have learned a valuable lesson, thanks to you. On the lighter side...."What were you thinking?" and "with freinds like that who needs enemies?" come to mind.

Kayaks / Re: Trident Ultra 4.7

May not have long to wait! Called a Sacramento dealer last week from craigslist add regarding the one $850 used trident 15.  It was gone of course but he said I may want to wait anyway because Ocean Kayak was coming out with with a new angler with cool changes in three weeks.

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your perspective on the wetsuit and the info about the mishap of your fishing partner.  I'm kinda scratching my head on the rest.

Frank,
I don't know if that was ment as a self rescue class reminder or go with the wetsuit. It worked for both.

Z man, half way though this post i started looking for brands, thicknesses and zippers on farmer johns, thanks - :smt008

I am gona try the clown shoes,
What about going pee, iv'e gone twice so far, straddle yak, pull down waders and peed in yak but it wasn't easy.  It seems cutting a hole or making a flap in waders......wait a sec, the zipper on a wetsuit would be an easy way to free Shamu.  A Free Shamu and added safety feature for hypothermia sounds like wetsuit is the ticket as long as farmer johns have zippers

I ment 3.5 waders and thought they would have similar insulation qaulities as wetsuit and also stay tight to your body.
Ocean fishing 49 to 58 +/- degree water.
And I'm not talking clown sized shoes, just oversized to fit over neoprene?

General Fishing Tips / waders VS wetsuit

I could use input on what is working best out there? I started fishing with lug sole neoprene boot waders and need to upgrade.  Thinking of stocking foot waders & sandles or shoes.  Think this will be cost effective and dry.  Also wondering if oversize sandles would act as mini fins and give the older and belly handicapped folks a little extra help in self rescue?  Sandles could work for both stocking feet waders or wetsuits.

Frank,
They are with you a long time, when we had to have Baily put down she was 16, I held her and cried like a baby.
I'm curious as to how your dogs temperment changed after having a litter as we plan to breed our girl Koda one day. She's a great dog and has a strong desire to hunt but some times I wish she would take a chill pill.  Koda's 6 months old in this pic

Frank, your a dog person, another plus in my book.  We have a three year old blk lab that's part of the family and loves to hunt and fish.
Congradulations on your coming litter, Bill

Frankfishing, Mooch and others,
I gave this some more thaught and you guys are absolutely right I need to and will take a self rescue course.  Thanks for opening my eyes, and i appriciate the manner in which it was done (did'nt get slammed to hard).  You are a good bunch and i hope to fish with you (without worries of my abilities to help myself and others that may need help). I'm sure My Familily will also appriciate. Thanks again

Lets say going swimming in my case was a lack of skill which comes from experience and getting back in safe was not lucky but a combination of wits, determination and awareness.  Gods Pond was calm on Saturday and for my fourth time in a yak i feel i had the odds stacked in my favor as best i chould. My first post may have embellished the scary side of the adventure but at no time did I fear for my life,....... except for a small time........ for the Devels Teeth......and anyone who swims, boards, dives, yaks or trails fish from a yak on the central and north coast is in the same boat in that regard. Don't see myself taking a self rescue class, at this point it seems redundent. I greatly appriciatte the welcomes and let (not) the onslaught begin
1) Read and practice the saftey guidlines on the NCKA home page 2) take a self resue class or practice in safe area until you are completely capable of self rescue 3) keep your beer belly and your shoulders near the center of gravity 4) don't take your yak out in rough water 5) wear a knife to cut yourself out of a tangle 6) if you do go swimming stay calm and    :smt001
