General Talk / Seaweed Fertilizer
« on: December 09, 2022, 10:54:35 PM »
I love harvesting from the ocean. I also love gardening. I also hate paying too much for something I can make. So here I am making seaweed fertilizer now.

General Talk / Fishfinder battery hook up question
« on: November 12, 2022, 11:08:25 AM »
I’ve been kayak fishing for 10 or 12 years and the entire time I’ve use the same cheap Lowrance fishfinder. It finally crapped out on me so I ordered a Garman because I got a great deal on an open box product. When it showed up the battery hook up was something I don’t recognize. How can I use this battery hook up with this type of battery?

General Talk / Make fish fertilizer out of your carcasses
« on: November 04, 2022, 12:14:41 PM »
I've been successfully fermenting my old fish carcasses into high grade garden fertilizer. This stuff is amazing in your garden, it is expensive to buy and then you'll never know what was in it. This way you can use 100% of the fish you harvest, get the best free fertilizer, and you'll know exactly what is in it and where it came from.

I’m looking for a more high end surf fishing set up. If you have this rod and you’re not using it much I would love to buy it from you.

Fishing Pics / Re: Underwater footage, lingcod bite

Cool!  Looks like the little ling almost got you snagged on the rocks or that urchin!

Try again and you'll probably get more good things to watch.

What kind of camera are you using?

This is the camera I used. I’ve seen YouTube videos of people using the same ones while trolling.

Fishing Pics / Underwater footage, lingcod bite
« on: December 19, 2021, 08:00:02 PM »
A couple months ago I was out on my kayak in Santa Cruz using an underwater camera above a fresh dead mackerel. I didn’t catch anything so I assumed nothing was on the video. Today I happened to review it and saw a cool interaction with a small lingcod. I know the bait is big compared to the lingcod but it is interesting that after it takes a hold of the mackerel it just holds it for a little bit without trying to swallow it.

General Talk / TC camping?
« on: October 06, 2021, 09:25:49 PM »
Does anybody know if Brenda at Timber Cove is allowing overnight campers down on the beach? I’ve called a handful of times over the past couple months and haven’t got through to her. Last time I went up there for a day trip she was there and people were camping, so I’m not sure what to think.

Thank you!

General Talk / Re: Where’s the squid? 🦑
« on: September 03, 2021, 08:14:56 PM »
My buddies were out there but couldn't find any squid. You can always go for different species if you can't find squid.

Even if there is a maybe, I will give it a try. My wife really wants squid too so that gives me an extra motivation. I will take your advice and bring frozen bait just in case I need to drift for halibut if I skunk on the squid.
Thanks MooMoo

General Talk / Where’s the squid? 🦑

For several weeks I’ve seen people getting squid from their kayaks in Monterey Bay. I haven’t had time until this weekend. Are they still there? I’d love fresh squid!
Thank you 🙏

Probably a great horned owl. Google their sounds, play a few because different ages and sexes make different noises.

Wanted To Buy / Wanted: GoPro 8 black
« on: April 16, 2021, 09:38:44 PM »
Hey all. I have been using a Chinese knock off action cameras and they are driving me nuts. I can’t afford a brand new hero 9 at $450 but a used hero 8 black might be something I can afford. Has anybody upgraded to the 9 that is willing to sell their 8? If so, how much do you want for it?

Thanks!

Recipes / Re: Makin Bacon 🥓
« on: February 01, 2021, 06:20:37 PM »
The bacon looks good.   I've been making it for a while now.  We don't eat very much store bought bacon anymore.

If it's got too much smoke for you now, let  it sit for a few days. The smoke will mellow out.

I have only hot smoked, but I see that a lot of people cold smoke for about 24 hours...some of them go 6 hours in smoke and then put it in the fridge to rest and repeat 4 times.  Of course everyone has their own way of making "the best" bacon so following someones method may or may not work for everyone.

I'm going to try making Canadian bacon in the next couple of weeks if I can run across both time and energy at the same time.

A couple of days ago Art and I were talking about putting together some sausages.

24 hours of smoke is a lot of smoke. I love lox and it is not too smoky so maybe I overdid it with my chips or some thing?

Recipes / Makin Bacon 🥓
« on: January 22, 2021, 02:07:18 PM »
I picked up a few pounds of quality pork belly because I wanted to make my own bacon. I dry cured it in the refrigerator in a mixture of salt, spices, herbs, and maple syrup. I flipped the package daily to disperse the cure mixture and extracted fluids. After eight days I rinsed the pork and placed it on a rack in my refrigerator to form a pellicle for 24 hours. I used the cold smoker attachment on my Master Built electric smoker and didn’t even turn the main unit on. I smoked it for four hours in a mixture of alder, apple, and cherry chips. I wrapped the bacon and put it in the refrigerator to chill overnight. This morning I sliced it thick and fried it up with large duck eggs I happen to have. It was all delicious! Some takeaways; I probably went overboard on my spice mixture and will keep it more simple in the future. Also, it might’ve been a little too much smoke so maybe next time I will cut it down to 3 hours, or 3:30 smoke time.

General Talk / West Marine new line sur-charge
« on: January 05, 2021, 10:22:58 AM »
West Marine new line sur-charge... SUCKS. Sorry, I need to vent.
I went to West Marine in Alameda yesterday to get new line put on a reel as I've done many times in the past.  Paying by the foot or yard is a little more than buying a whole spool but then you end up with tightly wrapped line and I think it is worth it. However, West Marine now wants $5 to unspool your reel then $10 to spool it. That is ON TOP of the regular line fee. $15 before any line hits your reel. I told the employee sorry, not for me. I went home and ordered a spool of line online to do it myself. I'm reelly annoyed (pun intended).
