Recipes / Re: Mackerel 1st attempt

I've only had the pacifics with the green squiggles on their backs but love them. They grill up nicely like sardines. Sadly, nothing would touch my sabiki when I was out at HMB over the weekend. I was hoping to make live bait for halibut, but also to get some macks to bring home for the grill.

Cheers,
Brad

That thing is wild. Whoever is building it has done a lot of work over the last year. I saw it trolling the area for salmon last year and it was maybe a quarter the size it is now.

Brad

A word of caution on that cable.  I've never had any luck with vinyl coated galvanized surviving very long on salt water.  The salt seems to wick right up and get trapped by the vinyl and starts to rust from the inside out leading to failure.

vinyl coated stainless looks to be $1 a foot at Home Despot - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-8-in-x-1-ft-Stainless-Steel-Vinyl-Coated-Wire-Rope-809916/204765305

That looks great and creates a more solid connection/power transfer than the bungee solution. Thanks!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Bait outside of SC harbor

I was out Sunday and stopped out front with two other boats -- didn't see much bait on the screen, on my sabiki or going into the other two boats.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Keeping ice on the kayak
« on: August 07, 2023, 04:56:15 PM »
I run one of the taco style fish bags from Sea Angler -- it rides nicely between my seatback and crate and provides easy access for storing fish, retrieving bait, etc. I got the 36" x 20" pack and it handled a 40+ pound limit of salmon. https://www.seaanglergear.com/36x20-insulated-inshore-fishing-bag/

For cold I use one of these cooler shock packs - https://www.amazon.com/Pack-Large-Cooler-Freeze-Packs/dp/B00V9ITMYC - they keep everything nice and cool all day.

As a zippered bag it will leak in the car, but using the cold packs limits the amount of runoff.

Brad

Kokatat warranty is great -- they fixed a zipper on my dry suit without a problem. Good luck with the repairs.

A manager for their gov't program is also a great steelhead and salmon guide -- Kenny Priest, Fishing the North Coast. I've done a couple float trips with him on the Eel.

General Talk / OP Kayak incident 6-1

Anyone have any information on the kayak rescue at Oyster Point yesterday? Saw this posted on Coastside. Good work to the AI/TI kayaker on the rescue and catch!

Coastside report:
"I was at Oyster today. When I arrive there were all kinds of SSFPD cars and SSF fire trucks. One the police asked if I had binocs. Yes, I do. Turned out a kayak fisherman radioed for help just outside the breakwater and taking in water. A passer -by large sailing trimaran kayak picked up the guy and transferred him to a more stable real boat. The trimaran kayak skipper was the hero. The Trimaran had a large butt on board. BTW, 4 butts to 17# were landed by the pier anglers using fresh caught jacksmelts"

Thanks for the tip and the video -- looks like it'll make running bait for salmon less of a chore. I often choose to run junk just so I don't have to check it as often and rest the downrigger each time :-)

Brad

On the original topic, the DFW got back to me and it’s been escalated. Numerous complaints were made to CalTip.
Best post in this thread.

CA Regulations / Re: Over limit halibut - youtubers strike again

There is really a problem with the fresh and salty group and their inability to understand and follow the regulations. I had a lengthy discussion with several one time at OP about it being illegal to fish multiple rods there for halibut. There are far too many examples like this seen online and even more in person when they bomb a launch/location with dozens taking anything and everything they catch. DFW would be well served to join some of their hook-ups - a couple of enforcement actions would go a long way to getting better compliance.

Cheers(???)

For your birdwatching pleasure - I understand it prefers a south swell but works other times. There's a pullout/overlook on the north side where you can get eyes on it. the break is right below you.
