General Fishing Tips / Is this Kripple Anchovie spinning too fast?
« on: October 15, 2018, 10:15:40 PM »
Every since I started using an outboard motor on my AI I haven't hooked a salmon in the last four trips. I'm wondering whether my trolling speed or the spin on my KA is too fast. When my outboard is running at the lowest speed, my kayak travels at between 2.2 to 3 mph. I have an underwater view of the KA. Do you guys think the KA is spinning too fast or my travel speed is too fast? It would be great to hook at least one more salmon before the season is over. Thanks in advance.

Craftsmen's Corner / Gas motor mount for the AI
« on: July 01, 2018, 06:45:43 PM »
I finally got some time to put together a gas motor mount for the AI, just in time for chasing salmon. I saw a few designs on the internet, I don't like any of them. I want something that takes very little time to put on and take off. I don't want a whole bunch of extra dead weight or take up too much space. And I want it to be reversible. Most importantly, I don't want to drill a single hole on the kayak.

Here's what I did. When not installed, I can use the Scotty mounts for normal rod holder use. Takes less than a minute to install or take off. Feels very solid, but I need to test it to confirm. I'll let the pictures do the talking. Thanks for looking.

ps. The piece that goes inside the Scotty is 3D printed.

The green pieces below the aluminum bar are for cushioning the bar so that it won't scratch up the plastic and the Aka mount. 3D printed with flexible TPU filament.

I'm trying to upgrade to a Lowrance Ti 7 with TotalScan. It's been a confusing journey. Anyhow, from page 27 of the installation guide, I see that one cable connects to the battery, but the other cable from the same plug connects to a "NMEA 0183 device".  My question is, do I need to buy a NMEA 0183 device in order to use the Ti 7 with gps? If not, does it mean I can ignore the NMEA 0183 cable?

I'm about to pull the tirgger on a Ti 7 TotalScan with Navionics+ for $799. Eligible for a $100 rebate that expires on 5/31/18. Is it a good deal? Seems everyone on the internet is selling at $799.

Thanks,

I fished the Rockwall yesterday, but I don't have anything exciting to report. I managed 6-7 shorts between 19-21". I ended up with one 22 and a quarter inch fish. That was my first ever keeper halibut. It's so small I didn't even bother taking a picture of it. What I do want to share is an underwater footage showing how much debris is on the bottom flowing with the tide. Most of the day I spent reeling in and checking my setup to make sure the bait is free of algae or moss or other crap. It was not a favorable condition to fish in. Perhaps once you see what the bottom looks like, you would adjust your rig accordingly.

The footage was taken at the deep channel (not the hole) about a mile out toward south SF. Was trolling at 1.5 mph in 20' of water.
Btw, I never felt that bite :smt003

For Sale / ebay - Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 6601 Lefty for $90
« on: October 06, 2017, 04:16:48 PM »
Just fyi. This ebay seller is selling the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 6601 Lefty for $90. That's $40 less than the going price. I bought one from him two weeks ago. He sold out quickly but got 8 more yesterday. I just bought one more. There are 3 left as of now.

Page 47 of the 2017-2018 Ocean Sport Fishing Regulation says...
"No person shall take more than 12 abalone during a calendar year. In the Open Area as defined in subsections
29.15(a) and 29.15(a)(1) above, not more than 9 abalone of the
yearly trip limit may be taken south of the boundary between
Sonoma and Mendocino counties"

29.15(a) = North of San Francisco.
29.15(a)(1) = Fort Ross closure.

This is confusing. Is it saying that only 9 or less can be taking in Mendo/Sonoma counties, and the remaining 3 have to in the north (Humboldt county)?

Could someone recommend a pair of boot foot waders for the beach? I'm sick and tired of cleaning off sand from my stocking foot waders and boots. Something less than $200 would be ideal.

Thanks,

Hello,
I'm hoping to get some intel on the American. Specifically, I'm trying to find out if the Upper Sunrise area has shad and whether that section of the river is fishable. I planned to park at the Upper Sunrise lot and possibly launch at the ramp and go up. If things look good, I'm planning to come up and fish in the afternoon/evening tomorrow Friday. Any info you can provide is appreciated.

Thank you,
ernest

For Sale / Metal bandsaw and Wood Planer
« on: October 08, 2014, 10:34:13 AM »
I have a couple of items for sale. They're just taking up space in my garage. I'll try selling them here before I put them on Craigs.

First up, Harborfreight metal bandsaw...
http://www.harborfreight.com/horizontal-vertical-metal-cutting-bandsaw-93762.html

I bought this to cut some metal to build brackets. I have not used it since. The legs have been strengthened. It is rock solid. I installed an Irwin bi-metal blade on it. I will also include a brand new Starrett Duratec PH blade. I paid $210 for the saw and $60 for the blades. Selling for $100.

Next is a Ryobi AP 1301 wood planer.
https://www.ryobitools.com/power-tools/products/details/67

I bought this to plane wood planks for making spear guns. However, I found this to be an overkill for planing wood for my purpose. It's been sitting in my garage for three years collecting dust. However, two issues with it. 1) the extended handle broke off. You can still turn the knob to adjust the blade height; 2) there is crack on the case just above the RYOBI logo. These issues do not interfere with the planing operation at all and is more of a cosmetic problem only. Paid $240. Selling at $50.

Lastly, I have a hand drilling guide from Harborfreight.

Free to the first person that buys one of the above items.

Please ask if you have any question. The purpose of the sale is to make room in my garage, so please don't claim the above items unless you're willing to make arrangement with me to get them out of my garage within a reasonable amount of time.

I live in Union City, work in Palo Alto. I can meet you anywhere in between. I can also deliver to the HMB Fish-n'- Chill this Saturday.

Thanks for your time,
ernest

General Fishing Tips / AR shad intel requested
« on: June 30, 2014, 10:13:19 PM »
I'm hoping the Sacramento crew can provide some info on AR shad. I'm hoping the shad is in the Upper Sunrise area (since that's the only section I'm familiar with). If so, I plan to make a trip up there on Thursday 7/3. Any intel is appreciated.

thx,
ernest

I went on some sort of a shopping spree last month. Purchased some stuff that don't really fit my needs. These are purchased new and unused just one month ago. I prefer cash Paypal, but cash upfront is fine too. (If Paypal, please don't use credit and send as Gift, so I don't get hit with a fee.)

First up, Shimano Sustain 4000. I bought both the 4000 and 5000. I never knew that the 5000 is basically the same reel as the 4000 with a bigger spool. I don't need two 4000 size reels, so I'm selling the 4000. I paid $270 for the reel on eBay, plus I bought an extra spool for $60. Selling both the reel and extra spool for $250. (Free shipping or arrange for pickup.)

Next up, Fenwick Elite Tech Salmon/Steelhead rod. 9'6" Light Action spinning Drift rod, aka Center-Pin, or Float rod. I'm a fan of Fenwick rods. I bought four rods in this series together from light to heavy. Why they put a Center-Pin type handle on the light action and not on the others is beyond me. Their catalog shows it has a regular handle, but the one I received has a Center-pin type handle. The place I bought it from showed the regular handle only. I could send it back, but shipping a rod is not cheap for non-commercial customers. I'll try to sell it, but if no one is interested, I guess I'll learn to use a Center-pin rod. If you don't know what's a Center-pin rod, I guess this rod is not for you. It's a specialized rod for float fishing on rivers. This rod is light and feels really good in the hand, very much like a 5wt fly rod. Too bad it's got the Center-pin handle. Selling at $40. Arrange for pickup only.

Thanks for looking,
ernest

I bought a couple years back with the intention to learn how to weld. Used no more than 10 times. I have since gotten bigger toys and no longer need this. Paid $99. Sell for $50.

I also moved to a full size drill press and no longer need this bench top version. One small corner of the base is broken during the last move, but does not affect stability. Paid $60. Sell for $20.

Pick up in Union City. I need to make room in my garage. Will consider trade.

Thanks,
ernest
