General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing Berkeley Marina From Shore?
« on: April 22, 2018, 06:35:34 PM »
Fishing the Berkeley pier can be tons of fun.  I've caught shiner perch, rubber lip perch, cabezon, and crabs.  Mostly on 2 inch Gulp sand worms and pile worms.  Also, you may want to try fishing Pt. Isabelle   from the rocks.  I've caught several Jack Smelt there on 2 inch Gulp sand worms.  Fishing those areas with relatively light light line and rig can make it more fun.  Personally I really love the fight of perch and Jack Smelt - if you're a fishing addict like myself it doesn't it doesn't matter whats on the other end of the line.  Its true these two area are Snag City so be prepared.  Good luck fishing and with finals!

Congrats on the purchase. I have a 2017 SG 110. I’m very happy with it and had the same budgetary constraints as yourself. The 110 was a huge upgrade from my Lifetime Tamarack 10’ which I still hold dearly in my heart because it’s what got me passionate about this sport.

I appreciate all your replys.  Man, those big nets have big prices.

Eddie, I think I may have read in a previous post that a butt had jumped out of your big net?  That's just crazy!!!

Kayaks / Re: Vibe kayak??
« on: April 20, 2018, 08:14:25 PM »
Last winter I purchased a 2017 Vibe Seaghost 110. I ordered on-line and it was shipped free from the Kennesaw GA headquarters.  I think I payed about $850 (Prior to the SG I had a Lifetime Tamarack 10 which I actually loved for its price) I bought the SG primarily for LMB fishing in lakes but what has happened is I now prefer to fish in the SF Bay.

The things I like about the SG are the rudder pedals, good storage space, and generally comfortable seat.  My biggest con is the weight but then again the only other kayak I had was the Tam. 10 and that was super light.

I prefer casting baits vs. dead sticking or even drifting bait so I would really like a pedal kayak of some sort.Hope this give you some insight in the Vibes.

Thanks for the reply, Eddie.  Can you quantify big?  I've been eying these Yak Attack leverage nets - its 21x 20.   https://www.amazon.com/Yakattack-Leverage-Landing-Hoop-Extension/dp/B071X4PK9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524275047&sr=8-1&keywords=yakattack+net

Just being a smart ass but wouldn't it be cool to have a net that once the fish is in the net an electric shock is applied stunning the fish.  I'm guessing Department of Fish and Games some where use this - nothing too innovative, I know.

General Fishing Tips / Recommended Landing Net for Halibut
« on: April 20, 2018, 05:29:09 PM »
Hello All,

First off I'm new here and I did a search for "halibut net" and came up with a number of search results that didn't give me the answer I was looking for.

So this week I lost, I believe to be, my first legal size halibut.  I brought it up to the kayak and then it dove down HARD and then it resurfaced - thats when it shook it self loose from the swim bait.  :smt010  So sad! Do you have recommendations for a quality butt net?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Handheld vhf radio?
« on: April 19, 2018, 07:55:22 PM »
Today, I fished the Berkeley Flats and had a visit from Dept. of Fish & Wildlife.  After the usual questions I asked if they could help determine if my VHF radio works.  I guess DFW operates on channel 22A. And sure enough I was able to transmit and receive.  :smt001

Guys, thanks for all the advice and tips.  I was formerly a bay windsurfer and never felt compelled to get a VHF.  I think I was lucky I never needed assistance....I had friends that had several rescues from the coast guard.  Now, I typically kayak the bay alone and will soon venture out to the ocean so I believe its imperative I have a VHF.

Hello,

I'm new here and was wondering...

For a cheap fish bag cooler, has anyone ever filled a garbage bag(white would be best I assume) with ice?

Hey Zach,

I have a 2017 SG 110.  The things I've done so far are: Installed a Garmin Striker fish finder, yak attack anchor trolley and an electronic console(check out Dinsmore Outdoors on Youtube).  I think that is about it, so far.

My first largish LMB out of Lake Chabot in my, now gone, Lifetime Tamarack 110.  I remember randomly throwing a wacky hook Senko in to some reeds for the heck of it, then BAM! Took me on my first sleigh ride. Glad the 6lb flourocarbon - to- braid FG knot held up!

I purchased a Standard Horizon HX300 from West Marine.  While I can scan and hear talk  on a number of channels, I'm not certain I can transmit. I've tried a number of times asking for a "Radio Check" and no one, at least from what I can hear, is responding.  I'm not certain I'm doing this correctly.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Introductions / Hello from the East Bay
« on: March 12, 2018, 06:24:11 PM »
I'm a newbie kayak fisherman.  I'm looking forward to fishing the saltwater a lot more this year and meeting some new people.  Up to this point I've restricted myself to short kayak outings around the Berkeley Pier and surrounding area.  I've caught a number of Black Perch, man they fight hard for their size, and have caught Jack Smelt and Cabs from the shore.  Last year, I kayak fished for LMBs in my local lakes but have been drawn to saltwater fishing because of the greater variety of fish and there is just something special about saltwater.

Despite being an experienced windsurfer here in the SF Bay Area,  wind and big swell were my friend then,  I'm prioritizing kayak safety.  I would love to have an opportunity to hook up with some of y'all this year.  Happy fishing!
