Title: Morel danger - RIP pmmpete
Post by: Nolanduke on April 23, 2024, 04:07:02 PM
I did not know Pete personally - never met him, but his posts were VERY informative and it seemed like he was a bomb kayak fisherman.  Looks like he was poisoned by morels!!

This was one of my favorite pmmpete inventions: https://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=97723.0    :smt044 :smt044

His more useful posts were on downrigger setup.  You can find a lot here, but also on NWKA: https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11486.msg128141#msg128141

RIP Pete... hope you're slayin macs somewhere nice

That's very sad and very strange. I guess any kind of food poisoning can be lights out if you are older or have underlying health issues.

Pro-tip: the best way to cook morels or any mushrooms is to "wet saute." Cover with water, bring to a boil, let the water completely boil off, then throw in butter/oil/lard to saute. Much better and more even cooking than "dry saute" and you guarantee they'll be cooked through.

Super sad to hear this news. He helped me enormously in giving advice when I was setting up my downrigger for. Y Revo 16 a few years back.

Seems like it's only the raw ones that hurt you. Yes?
I have some dehydrated ones that I want to eat soon. I've never eaten them after rehydrating and wonder if I should worry, or do a certain way.

Just got to make sure you cook them thoroughly. When you think that they are done.... cook them another 10 minutes or so.

Terribly sad news. As many others have said here, he was a very knowledgeable outdoorsman who contributed a lot which many of us benefitted from.

Some details here about morels I did not know. Perhaps useful for any foragers reading this.

RIP Pete

Yikes. Every time I think I am ready to start trying to harvest mushrooms I hear another of these stories! Seems like it just isn't worth the risk to me.

It seems like common knowledge in the mushroom community to cook morels 20-30 minutes.  You can wet saute, and it's almost impossible to overcook mushroom.  Their cell structure doesn't go mushy.

I find it concerning that many recipes on the web give directions to cook morels for as little as 5 minute.  That's no good IMO.

I had fresh morels 2 weeks ago. Cut them small, sautéed them hot in butter, and then scrambled eggs into them. I then had morel/egg tacos. Goddamn good! I think that is the draw.
When you have morels, you know they are morels. I'll make extra sure to cook them well from now on.
