I was curious about the Diawa stuff too. Looks like the coated stuff makes more headaches, so think I will steer clear of that.

Daiwa stuff is good. That cheap braided line they sell on amazon and eBay is garbage. I’d rather run mono or all fluoro then that stuff.

I’m familiar with cutting off the top 25yds, more or less depending on your estimation, and tying it back on the spool with the line reversed using the newly cut end at the spool and the fresh previous line at the spool is now at the front.  If this is legit or not others can chime in... :smt006

I’ll occasionally trim a few yards off the end and retie. And after a couple of seasons of hard use, I’ll do that reverso trick and get a couple more seasons use.

I never liked PP. It seemed to me that it would fray a lot easier than the Sufix 832 that I use now, and it also seemed more prone to cut my skin.

I've switched from Power Pro to Daiwa JBraid x8, very happy with it.

I'm also using Daiwa J Braid 8-strand.  The 30# has a breaking strength close to 50#.  Not that I'm catching anything local that needs that much strength...

So some grease, then flex wrap no need for backing? I like this idea.

This would fall in the old school dept but for saltwater reels my grandad used braid and no topshot and caught more salmon than anyone I know

After fishing we hooked the line to something he rigged on both ends of the fence along the driveway and walked up and down until we completely unloaded the line

Then we did a freshwater wash w a wet cloth and let it dry before reeling it all back on

Newer braids are probably more durable but I don’t remember him ever needing to replace his line

He also had a pair of pants that he bought in the 1930s, so if you want to make your pants last a lifetime that is possible too

Hah, that got a good chuckle out of me.

I do not do any backing on my braid, and I do not use electrical tape.  I have been following the advice in this video for several years now with bait casters, and spinning reels:

I spool the whole reel up with as many yards as it can fill and then tie on 10-12ft of Mono topshot, usually 30lb these days.  Then do the cut of "used" braid off the spool as needed, maybe once a season unless I screwed up somehow.  If it gets too low when fishing as deep, I replace it.  Ends up being every 3 or 4 years.  If a reel goes out of commission, for whatever reason, I steal the line off it for the next reel.  :smt044

If you want tons of comparative results, this video is pretty impressive (although they do not pick a "winner"):

Thanks for the info. Crazy how strong this stuff is. I ordered 300 yd spool of Diawa J braid grand 8. It will fill my Abu 6601 nicely.
