Well, I decided that I wanted to get weird with my rod. My grips were old and worn out amd I never really liked how long the handle was. I chopped 4 inches off the rear of the rod, am peeling off all the cork tape, will move the reel seat up 4 inches then re epoxy the reel seat and re wrap the grips.
Very cool. I wanna go buy and do this to an 805 now
A jerk at one end of the line waiting for a jerk at the other end.

I would like to do a corded grip and turks head on top, but that might be more in the future.

After some looking around and thinking I’m going to do a winn grip wrap similar to the Diawa proteus winn rods.

Also for the reel seat I’m going to ditch the screw seat and go with a clamp since I’ll be using conventional reels with this rod (penn sized 20).

So deckhand style full grip of Winn tape with a clamp. When the off season comes around I’ll try my hand at a corded grip with a Turks head.

Nice, it’s going to look great.  Although I like the longer butt section (I like the butt to stick past my elbow about .5-1” when holding the reel with my left hand), let me know if it fits in the hatch after the trim.  Btw I’m sure those Winn grips will look great!

So fwiw I havent had time to test exactly which of my rods fit in the holders but I know that 7'7" is about as long a rod as I can get into the hatch comfortably.  I knew 8' was too long so I didn't bother trying.  I started at 7'8" which was slightly too long, and bumped down to 7'6" which fit by about 1 inch.  I don't have any 7'7" rods but if i see one I'll pick it up and see how it fits.

As for the rod holders, the rods I have tried that fit:

Phenix m1 inshore 82H 20-45#, fits fine, and I believe due to tthis that all of my phenix and californian inshore rods will fit in the holders, as well as most of my swimbait rods (havent tried the guide select with the bulb end yet tho).

Offshore Angler Ocean master 7' spinning rods 15-25#, and 20-40# both fit fine
Offshore Angler sabiki rod (hollow rod), fits but a little snug with the cap on the gimble
Calstar 700M w/ Pac Bay Rod Butt will go in but the cap got stuck and pulled off of the rod butt when I took the rod out.  I will have to get a more narrow one and put it back into the rod holder.

Most spinning rods seem like they will fit fine
rods with a gimble butt will fit fine
rods that have a comfort butt cap and any 25-50 or 30-60# glass rods (seeker american series, calstar west coast series, graffighters, etc.) I would assume are just too big based on handling them.  I really doubt any jig sticks will fit in the rod holders.  I measured the butt where my clamp is on my custom 6490 and it was 1.25" and thats about 16" from the butt (meaning its tapered outward further as it gets toward the butt) and the cap is larger than that.  and thats about the size of all of my jig sticks.  They are all too long for the hatch anyways but for a non surf launch they are nice to have.

The trimmed down abyss is now 7 foot 6.5 inches and clears by 1/2 inch. So a fish a 500 will fit a 7-7 rod, not that anyone makes those.
