I’m getting a new 2021 Hobie Outback next week and saw a metal aftermarket rudder on the display model.

Has anyone installed a aftermarket rudder on their Outback?  Is there a real need to do so?

Thanks.

Bill

I don't have any experience, but I'd think this would be a pretty low priority upgrade. I suspect the difference between the stock plastic and aluminum rudder on an Outback would be small. But then, this guy on the Hobie forum seems to like it:

Many folks encounter a warped rudder that has a persistent drift to one side that they constantly fight while trying to track straight.  You also gain some authority going metal as it doesn't flex like the thin plastic one.

I have a metal one and upgraded after the plastic one got bent and dented. It helps in strong current and windy conditions and is worth the upgrade.  I installed it myself and then had to get my dealer to reinstall it because the rudder wasn’t going up and down quick enough. Watch some YouTube video on the install.

Thanks guys.  The salesman at Kayak City said he would install at time of purchase.  Said it would take him 5 minutes.
