I could never say enough good things about Mark & Margeret's shop. I worked for them for two or three summers, and their business is a reflection of themselves. Right on!
And, nice PFD I might add.

Safety First / Re: Humbled by god's creation," Bean Hallow" 10/20/06
« on: October 23, 2006, 10:57:20 AM »
Years ago, doing trips on Prince William Sound (central coast AK) there were a few things I always needed to see before I launched. These were, in no particular order:
-PFD on each paddler
-VHF with battery (sometimes the battery would get forgotten in the charger)
-flares (handheld at least)
-bilge pump for each kayak

It's kind of like the old "watch & wallet" before leaving the house, and these things are just second nature now.  Every time I try to pare down my gear I look at this little "insurance" pile of equipment and think. "well, when was the last time I actually used the...?" Now I'll just answer myself with "self, remember Frank & Eugene's Bean Hollow story?" A tale like this is always a positive thing when it turns out the way it did. Props to everyone involved for making it back & keeping safety awareness at the forefront. There are a lot of folks with yaks out there.

Hoo-eee, offshore of Bean H is someplace I would rather not be swimming, this time o' year.
Glad to hear it all turned out OK.

"Pippet, c'mon pippet! Pippet!"
I always feel sorry for Pippet when I watch that scene. You all know the movie.

General Talk / Re: Stringer?

The burlap sack I have now was originally used to import coffee from Costa Rica. Its a lot heavier weave than the potato sack I used to use, and it even had a few coffee beans left over in it. I picked it up at Bayside in the SC harbor for $2.00.

I mostly use the game clip to secure the fish, then slip them into a soaked burlap sack in the tankwell. Both the clip and the bag are leashed. After seeing too many sea lions come sniffing around others fish that were hung over the side, I keep mine in the tankwell. With the wet burlap bag, the fish seem to stay fresher than they ever did when I kept them in the water.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Best fishing sayings?
« on: October 17, 2006, 01:33:44 PM »
My sayings are both from my dad.

After landing a keeper halibut and was asked how he hooked the bait, he said "oh, in a twitchy sort of way".

But the one I use all the time relates to seeing any big fish come aboard,
"That's a HAWWG!"

General Talk / Re: Piscean artworks show scheduled for November 4th
« on: October 13, 2006, 12:51:57 PM »
Here's the flyer for the show. I'll have a couple of fishing related pieces, a triptych of rockfish pieces, and a couple of polynesian pieces. There will also be a hand decorated surfboard, a large traditional screen piece, and several local fish pieces (cabbie, sturgeon). The one on the flyer is a piece based on a tahitian legend, Daquwaka and the Kadavu reef god. Hope to see some of you there,

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Tie it down
« on: October 05, 2006, 09:31:29 AM »
I'm not sure if Tote was referring to me, but I had the exact emergency he described happen to me when i did not use a bow tie down. Now, I've shuttle lots of kayaks ovwer the years with bow tie downs, a lot on 3-4hr drives at freeway speeds, and that is the first time I've lost a boat off the roof. I no longer use the supplied strap system that came with my Mako saddle and have gone back to a single long strap looped around the bar itself, rather than the 2 piece strap with little fittings that Yakima has.
I don't normally use a bowline for around town type kayak hauling, but will always use one for long trips. Its cheap insurance.

General Talk / Re: Know of a good paddle for kayak surfing?
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:59:04 PM »
I started kayak surfing in SoCal, near Santa Barbara, and the long beach breaks down there are a lot more forgiving than some of the reef and point breaks in Central Cali. The water is "softer" when it slams you.  :smt003 The 1pc whitewater paddle is the way to go for surfing. You'll get more bite with the paddle blade and more maneuverability with a shorter paddle. I'm not sure of the dimensions of the yak board but as long as the paddle doesn't hit the sides while you're paddling you're good to go.

I'm not really into astrology, but I am a pisces. I've always been a water person, just grew up in that type of family so the fish symbol fits. When I was thinking up names for my studio (currently just a shed but ya gotta start somewhere) I chose Piscean Artworks since most of my inspiration comes from the ocean, and the first pieces I carved were all fish.

I use a one piece fiberglass paddle for surfing. The aluminum aqua bounds are notorious for breaking exactly as you described. I think the thin walled tubing they use just can't handle the stress. They work well for rental fleets where folks generally won't be surfing. I'd go to your local paddle shop & tell 'em what's been happening. A good shop should be able to set you up with something tougher.

I'm curious too. I've surfed a Cobra Wave Witch for several years, and i have yet to break a paddle. I've seen it happen before, but never experienced it. I've wiped out badly a few times but never hurt the paddle. I'm using a cheaper model white water paddle with thick plastic blades. Seems to work and only cost about $70.

Happened to me on opening day. Same area. Always produced fish before, but that day, nothin'. It happens. I like the idea that every skunk day is another day closer to a trophy day, nice!

That is great. The article was nice too, made me feel better. Don, your advice is right on. Give the crew some catnip & celebrate.
