Lingcod aren't a sculpin, unsure if others are poisonous.

A sad but not a surprising read. These past three years have been brutal on anadromous CA salmonids. I feel like we will be the last generation to experience any of these amazing fish in this state without some very real and far reaching water policy changes.

The "wild salmon" in CA feel like they are wild in name only. With the amount of intervention by government agencies and hatcheries necessary to keep them at harvestable (and crashing) numbers it feels disingenuous.

Nice action! That bottom fish looks more like a Spotted Bass than a Smallie.

Could have been a striper too. I've caught a few in that area plugging from the shore by the pier. Neat thing about that area is it could have been pretty much anything.

I went camping there a few times maybe 15 years ago. I caught a lot of brown and rainbow trout, they very obviously planted a lot of fish there at the time. Putah creek is a lot more productive further up closer to the dam, both for rainbows and pretty sizable browns. I've also heard there are smallmouth but never targeted them. I caught my personal best rainbow there in one of the shallow runs, measured 26". Beautiful naturalized/wild fish. Sorry to hear it hasn't been maintained.

General Talk / Re: Lake Amador got some Lightning Trout today (4/7)

The DNR stocked these in rivers in Maryland when I lived there. They get picked off pretty quickly by herons and otters. I wish they'd spend some of that time and money farming some native fish that are worth a damn.

I don't think its an MFE, look at the head shape. Looks more like the related Rock Prickleback to me.

Fish Talk / Re: Article on lingcod bag limits

Kind of echoing polepole here but, I'd be happy to see a maximum size limit imposed. I feel like slot limits are a fantastic and underutilized management tool for longterm fishery health. They can be a difficult sell since the "bigger is better" mentality is hard to shake, especially in the fishing for profit sector. They've been great for numerous fisheries though, Striped Bass in the Chesapeake Bay being a classic example.

Also I have no issue keeping an additional small ling. Three 24-26" lings would be rad.

Honestly, it makes sense to me. I saw this same sort of problem in a lot of Maryland's streams/rivers when I moved there. The DFG stocked rainbows and browns into most of the suitable habitat and now complain about the native Brook trout numbers declining. Pretty basic fish knowledge will tell you that Browns are more aggressive, larger and spawn at the same time in the same places as the smaller, native Brookies. Not hard to figure out what will happen. I am glad that Yellowstone is taking action, but they could also stop stocking non-native trout and replenish stocks with native strain hatchery cutthroats. That could potentially maintain catchable numbers for tourists while reducing the numbers (over time) of non native salmonids. Most likely a cost-prohibitive option though...

Awesome pictures, looks like a fun day of work! I am curious if Kokes are able to successfully spawn naturally anywhere in the state, anyone know?

Never done too well fishing the main lake at Donner. Caught some small Rainbows and Browns fishing the outlet area near the Memorial statue on flies. That narrow snake-y section of lake is usually good for a few planters.
