General Fishing Tips / Re: Neoprene Wrist Gasket Replacement
« on: April 15, 2024, 07:56:10 PM »
I was extremely reluctant to get a drysuit, as I've always had issues with latex rubber gloves. If I put on latex gloves, my hands turn red and skin gets itchy, and worse. So, when I got my first drysuit, I was planning on replacing the wrist gaskets, but miraculously, the latex wrist gaskets on my Kokatat (semi)drysuit don't seem to bother my skin.

Anyways, are there silicone rubber wrist gaskets? I seem to recall seeing some when I was thinking that I'd need to replace my wrist gaskets.

That is nice! Much better than using straps.

Interesting kayak.

Under the right conditions (light wind), and if you don't have too far to travel, that should work on the ocean.

My nemeses are squirrels. I hadn't gotten any in a while, but there was a big one in my trap today...

They taste like chicken  :smt002

Not chicken-like, although they are actually very tasty. I used to hunt them when I was a kid, but I can't sell my wife on the idea of eating a rodent...

... if no plate or VIN might be easiest to tell them it was custom made.

Any idea what happens in that case. Coincidentally, I'm building a trailer for my Hobie AI, and it should be done any day now (I've been saying for a couple of months, but this time I mean it!)

General Talk / Re: Sunglasses that I highly recommend
« on: April 01, 2024, 10:37:18 AM »
Beware of cheap sunglasses. Polarization is a minimum, but according to my optometrist, quality of UV A and B blockage varies. He says you need to look up lens ratings - I'm not sure where. Cheap sunglasses can actually do more harm than not wearing any, by increasing the dilation of your eyes, letting in more UV.

Not sure that I'd trust an optometrist on this issue, as the would seem to have a vested interest in selling expensive glasses. Here is an article where a bunch of cheap sunglasses were actually tested for UV protection:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2374185/Are-cheap-sunglasses-safe-We-asked-eye-expert-analyse-cut-price-shades.html

Although there were a couple of duds (for various reasons), the conclusion by their expert is: 'I've been pleasantly surprised,' says Mr Goldberg. 'It seems in the vast majority of cases the CE marks can be trusted and manufacturers are taking greater care about the type of sunglass they sell - even at the budget end of the market.'

Thanks for the video.

Those look great for the price, but I tend to lose my sunglasses more often than anything else on my AI, so I go super-duper-el-cheapo:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001YXRDC/?th=1

Although these are not polarized, they are remarkably scratch-resistant. They are also easy to clean on the water, which is important to me, as I'm often getting splashed when piloting my AI, and I hate looking thru water drops. I have a fairly small noggin myself, and these fit great, but they might be a bit tight if you are a human cabezon...

That's great to hear.

+1

I also sent them a message and did not get a reply (not that I was expecting one).
