Title: Pelican Catch Kayak: PWM modification
Post by: Sailfish on November 29, 2022, 06:35:45 PM
It's getting harder and harder for me to load the kayaks on top of the rack. So I pull the plug and purchase a new kayak/boat that fit inside my Tacoma truck.  Just received it today and really like it  :smt007. Ordered the Minn Kota 50lb thrust and 100AH LiFePO4 battery and can't wait to take it out for a spin.

Sweet kayak, looking forward to reading your review!  I've considered this same hull and similar drive setup.  I like the 4 flush mount rod holders behind the seat - would be easy to keep everything organized and easily in reach.

Will post a review later.  I like the 360 degrees chair and very comfy seat.

Also need to buy a longer paddle, maybe 260cm since it's wider.

I have a Minkota 50 for a long time now and have never tried it.  What battery are you using with your new setup?  Think it would be fun to troll for trout with this thing on my AI

Half the cost of dakota's 100ah, that is pretty tempting.

Took the new yak out for a spin today.   Very stable and comfortable ride.  Really love the 360 swivel chair.  Tried paddle and not too bad for speed but not tracking well maybe I need to modify the trolling motor to add a "bullnose" rudder.

Hi Sonny, that's a cool rig, how much does it weigh fully loaded like you have it?

And does it kill your back transporting/loading/launching?

Around 130lb for now:
75 for kayak
28 for trolling motor
27 for battery
The kayak capacity is 450lbs

Is the PWM to regulate voltage or something for the motor?  I heard a few times that some batteries don't work with trolling motors, but wasn't sure what the limiting factor is.

True PWM doesn't regulate voltage but use a 555 timer chip to regulate the on/off cycles.  This will give us infinite speed control and increase battery usage time.

Took the kayak out for a test ride after the PWM modification.   Trolled from 8am to 2pm and my battery still has 50% left.  Caught a few Jumbo Jacksmells but no Halibut love.

Right on!  What is your cruising/trolling speed?  Did the PWM make a difference in battery life?  I will probably add a trolling motor to a tandem Perception this summer, just to make trips with my son a little easier for both of us - you posted some good info here to help get set up!

I was trolling around 2mph most of the time and about 3.5mph moving between spots. Top speed is around 5 - 7 mph depending on tide, wave,  and wind direction.  Before the PWM modification I only got 25% of battery juice left after 5 hours of trolling.

That's awesome - very worth while modification!

Good speeds too, would be great for all the trolling I do. Thanks for the info!

Since the new 50 Fathom depth rule later this year,  I upgrading my kayak from trolling motor to Suzuki 2.5HP outboard to help me getting to fishing ground faster.  Hope this works out.
