Ready to launch at 6:30 AM with fishing buddy Bob C. to beautful condtions.  Met Bloodbath at the launch site and wished each other good luck for the day.  We first tried the area towards the right where I've done very well through the years but not today.  Very little kelp. We found good meter marks and I dropped a butterfly jig and got one rocky, worked the area for a while but they had lockjaw.  Paddled towards Carmel for nothing.  We worked inside the cove and I got 1 keeper Ling and 8 rockies.  What worked; 15 lb flourocarbon and small 3 inch bass grubs.
Quite a few spearfishermen that day that made the fish skittish.  I am tired of feet getting wet and cold so I tried for the first time Sealskinz waterproof socks. They work and worth the money.

General Talk / Surf Zone Class today MBK
« on: February 14, 2010, 01:03:01 AM »
My wife and kid are out town so I figured I’d do a surf zone class.  Called up my fishing buddy and asked him if he wants to come along but he passes.  So I contacted MBK on Friday to sign up.
Is the Saturday surf zone class still on?  Yes.  Who else signed up?  Just you.  Is that good or bad?  It’s good, you get personalized instruction, show up at 1:30PM to get your gear together, class starts at 2PM.  Are you bringing your own kayak?  No thanks (I didn't want to bring my Revo, had a feeling whatever boat I would be using would take a beating) so I signed up.

Driving on Highway 1 just before the Del Monte exit I look to my right at the beach.  Shoot!   Those waves are at least 15 ft. high. This is going to be interesting.

Arrived at MBK and noticed the surf there was very doable. Signed the release form and was told my instructor would be Cody.  Noticed I was given a Mysterioso jacket and helmet while the other customers were getting paddling jackets, plus usual FJ wetsuit and PFD.  I am soon to find out why and thankful for that helmet.  I was going to be in the water a lot.

Cody started by telling how waves are created offshore, the waves we were facing today is he what called "dumping waves".  Almost like a rolling pin of solid water coming at you, not the best conditions but plenty doable because we were in a protected area. Our kayaks were Prowler 13's.

We started with exit and entry techniques, which I performed pretty well and got compliments from Cody.  EXCEPT for one surf exit when I assumed I was out of the surf zone but was not and was broadsided.  Dump #1 and many more before the end of the day.

Next lesson is “bracing” which is basically leaning into a wave while coming in back to shore  sideways.  I get it right a couple of times but get dumped more times.  This is how I got my worst dump for the day and grateful having a helmet on.  After being dumped I surfaced to see my kayak, upright and on top of a wave and ready to fall on top of me.  I realized I was holding my paddle and instictively  pointed it at the kayak and deflected it from crashing on me.  :smt103 All this happened in less than 2 seconds.  Cody was always next to me helping out and explained the waves today were not the best for a rookie learning to brace.

Next lesson was self rescue, we paddled about 50 yards out and Cody shows me how with a live demo.  Upright kayak by grabbing both handles to turn it right side up, once upright grab both handles, start kicking and pull yourself up.  Cody tells me its my turn, flip your kayak and jump in.  I hesitated for few seconds because I knew I could not feel the bottom.  But I did it anyway. I uprighted my kayak but could not pull myself up. Cody points out my whistle w/c was attached to my PFD was getting caught on the handle, I tucked it away and got aboard, tried it a few more times and I aced it every time.

We went back to bracing and again I need more practice. After the class Cody opened my yaks drain plug, there was about 2.5 gallons of water inside.
A few observations on other customers there that day; most knew their stuff and barely got wet when they got back.  But one couple rented a tandem, they could not get past the surf zone and kept getting dumped because they were barely paddling to get out.  The gal finally had enough and both called it quits after about 5 minutes.

Got changed and drove home. Called my wife long distance and wished her a Happy Valentine’s day.

Safety First / Disheartening situation at Quarry Lakes
« on: February 08, 2010, 12:15:12 AM »
I upgraded my Hobie Revo with turbo fins and tried them out at Quarry Lakes today.  I started unloading my yak and gear at about 2PM, I noticed a boy about 10 years old, shore fishing at the left bank of the dirt parking lot just above boat launch.  Then I saw a toddler, he was about 3 years old.  This kid was strapped to a child's car seat and placed on top of a bench.  I didn't pay attention since I figured the parents were close by.

The turbo fins great,  felt like I was going twice as fast compared to the regular fins.  At about 4PM it was getting overcast and wind was picking up and giving me the chills so I decided to call it quits.  Pulled into the dock, tied my yak and walked to my SUV and parked it at the dirt parking lot.  It took me about me about 30 minutes to get all my gear loaded.

I started hearing the 3 year old asking for his mommy. All that time the poor kid was still strapped to his car seat still on top of the same bench I saw him 2 hours ago.  He kept asking over and over for mommy.  I looked down and there were both parents a few feet away more interested fishing and ignoring this child. The sun was starting to go down and it was getting pretty cold, this kid had been there all that time, probably most of the day.  He didn't even have a warm cap on.

My blood started to boil, I wanted to confront them. I would never do this to my 2 year old daughter.  I see the Park Ranger driving by and I tell him what's going on, he told me he'll look into it and the police will be called if needed.  I hung around for a few seconds but never knew the outcome.  I hope Park Ranger called the cops on them, they sure deserve it.

I stopped by there today and picked up a rash guard for myself and my daughter.  Edgar still gave me my 10% NCKA discount even though its really swimming stuff.
He also told me they have a big 2 day sale this weekend, including boats and clothing.  I didn't ask for more details cause I bought a REVO 6 weeks ago, too much temptation and I'm already over my budget.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ram Rod Holders - Bay Area dealers
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:07:18 AM »
I am adding new Ram rod holders to my Hobie Revo. Does anybody know any Bay Area dealers that carries them? I know they readily available on the online stores.  I'd like to get a feel of one before buying one.  I've got my eye on the RAM Rod Revolution Tube Rod Holder 2008 http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=KFS&Product_Code=RAM-301-RBU&Category_Code=rh
or the Ram Tube 2008 http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=KFS&Product_Code=RAM-301-RBU&Category_Code=rh
I do mainly ocean fishing.  Any reviews would be appreciated.

Kayaks / Hobie Surf Launch
« on: August 14, 2009, 09:36:10 AM »
I will be trying out my new Revo for the first time tomorrow at Stillwater Carmel with my buddies.  I been a there a couple of times using a Malibu and Tarpon. Its mostly smooth sand, minor gravel.
A few questions.
1. Should I launch with the peddles installed? - (off position course)
2. Advice on fishing inside kelp with peddles, lock the peddles - off position or take them out?  I am just thinking its a pain to take them on and off when I move spots.
3. Re-entry, take peedles out or on off position?

Thanks in advance.
