Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Pool Noodles ?
« on: June 18, 2012, 10:32:30 PM »
Someone asked me to repost my pictures of the noodle transducer mount:

At the time I used silicone, but I believe that 3M 4000UV would probably work better.  The 4000 is supposedly better with plastic than 4200 or 5200.  Over the years I've had to re-glue the transducer a couple times.

General Talk / Re: Any bee keepers on NCKA?
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:04:36 PM »
I've thought about it, but it'd be one more thing to mess with, and I don't use a lot of honey anyway.  I believe in some areas you can contact local bee-keeping clubs and arrange for someone else will put in a hive on your property and care for it so you get the bees (and some honey kick-back) but don't have to do much work yourself.

You should test it with the biggest diamond jig you expect to use too...

I use leashes, those work even with a 20lb ling on the end.  ;)

I was just pointing out that I felt Bean Hollow is safer due to the lack of rocks in the surf.  I doubt the sharkiness is different because they're so close together.

Neither launch is good for taking my kids out in a kayak, but my older son (7) did catch several rockfish in the general vicinity the other weekend on a PB.   :smt006

I'd opt for bean hollow unless the surf is really light.  The launch/landing at pescadero has lots of boulders in the surf.  That breaks up small surf and makes it fairly easy, but larger surf could kill you on the rocks.  Bean hollow is maybe more likely to upend you, but it's a nice sand beach, which is less likely to cause serious injury.

Smaller the boat, bigger the thrills.  ;)

Way to play it safe.  Many of us just got a kayak and paddled out to sea.  I'm actually surprised nobody has died yet, I've had a couple times where I though my fishing partner was dead/about to die, and a couple times I wasn't sure I'd survive the landing (bean hollow on a 16' day and a sleeper wave in big sur).  Dress for immersion and fish in a group and 99% of the dangers are mitigated.

We worked hard for it, trolled for 5 hours.  Most other people were drifting (even in pbs), IMO trolling like heck covered the area needed to pick up a fish when there weren't many.  Like I said, tides should be optimal again in 2 weeks (this fish came at the peak of the tide), and the water should clear up, more flatties move into the bay - I bet it's going to be epic.

Tides will be favorable again in 2 weeks.  Lock-n-load.   :smt066

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / ARW Hali 4/30

Hit the rockwall this morning with some of my co-workers.  One brought a PB, and I came up with an idea to use it to tow the kayaks so they tack left and right.  With 50' ropes we had two kayaks with a ~40' spread and trolled all day in luxury.  The trick is to attach to the kayak at an eye loop near your foot, and have your trolling rig off the opposite side.  Both the off-center rope and the resistance from trolling make the kayak point away from the tow-boat, and kayaks have enough keel to them to tack out a ways.

There were a fair number of boats out, but I didn't see any fish but one:

32", 16lb.  Caught with an 8oz ball, 00 dodger, and a frozen chovie in about 20' of water out from the bay-facing corner in the rockwall, right around peak tide.

Gratuitous fish-sniffer:

The water was actually fairly clear.  I'd say 2' visibility.  It was a bit snotty in the AM, but okay by 10am or so.   I bet it'll be good tomorrow.

Check the reports for the hali-pron.  ;)

I'll be at the rockwall tomorrow, and probably sunday too, after stripers/halibut.

General Talk / Re: "inception" the movie
« on: July 22, 2010, 02:39:20 PM »
With the kids we hadn't been to many movies in the last couple years, but recently we discovered the drive-in in san jose and concord.  $6.75 for a double feature and kids 5-11 are $1.  Inception/Iron Man 2 starts at 8:55 this week.  You can see two movies with the whole family for what it would cost to see one movie alone, and the little ones can't annoy other people with the windows up.
http://www.westwinddriveins.com/view_theater_sj.php?id=1163

Tuesdays it's 4.75 for adults and kids up to 11 are free.  That works better in the winter though when the shows start at 7 and end at 11, rather than 9-1am.

If you bring a radio/earphones you can park in front of a kids movie and watch something else on an adjacent screen, though they do tent to put G and R movies on opposite ends of the lot.

You can bring your own food, beer and smokables too, and the snack bar prices are reasonable since you can bring your own stuff.  I recommend the super nachos.  ;)

Just remember to turn off your headlights...

General Talk / Re: Have You Saved A Buddy While Ab Diving????
« on: June 22, 2010, 04:01:20 PM »
Visibility is usually too poor to have sufficient awareness of your buddy to help them out if they get in trouble underwater.  I have retrieved a number of weight belts and freed a stuck anchor, but the person was not in danger...
