General Fishing Tips / Re: Need Advice on a Pedal-Drive!

Much appreciated! My brother just bought a Vibe and seems to love it. Do you know of any places in our area that allow demos? I only know Clavey’s and that yak shop in Santa Rosa

General Fishing Tips / Need Advice on a Pedal-Drive!
« on: July 07, 2023, 02:20:12 PM »
Hey all! Haven't been around here in awhile, but I recently got to fish off of a Hobie and am interested in upgrading from my Wildy Tarpon 16 to a pedal drive. I'd be doing a little bit of everything on it, from bass fishing to trolling on lakes/ocean, spearfishing, fly fishing, and transport while hunting. I'm sure this topic has been covered exhaustively on here, but maybe not quite to my specific needs. Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks, Jack

Unfortunately I didn't see any of this until after returning from the trip, but we didn't end up fishing Almanor anyways. Had some luck at Butt Lake though! Took home a 22" rainbow from below the powerhouse. Thanks for the help anyways, next trip up I'll try to hit Almanor.

It's been years since I've been up to Almanor, and have never gotten to troll the lake for trout but I'll be staying in the area tomorrow-Thursday and was wondering if anyone had any recent reports or tips on what the trout are looking for?

I was planning to troll a sled with spoons, crankbaits, and the rest of your garden variety trolling arsenal until i found out what worked. Also hoping the hex hatch is going off so that I can break out the fly rod.

Same goes for advice about smallmouth. Thanks!

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: floatline
« on: January 13, 2014, 05:42:29 PM »
I use red and my dive buddy uses blue. In terms of loss of color due to water depth, IMHO, it is minimal considering most folks free dive in less than 30ft of water.  I found both colors work well over the years.

+1!!!

Started with a 35 ft orange braided rope with a foam core style line. It got knotted and tangled on itself constantly, but held up fine. Just bought a 50 ft red rubber tubing style line because of the higher quality of material (less twists/tangles), maintaining high-visibility in the water and potentially having it blend in if I ever hit 50 ft of depth.

However, I don't see the point of any float lines longer than 50 feet. If i was hunting anything deeper than that or hunting fish that would potentially run and require to be fought from the surface (halibut/pelagics), i would use a reel. With a reel, i get to keep hold of my speargun (always a plus), and there isn't 100+ feet of floatline dragging in the water behind me.

All paid up and ready to hit the water! Just for clarity, who do we submit the pics and story to? Will it be on the doty 2014 page once that is up? Also, we are only submitting new species and personal bests for fish we shoot/catch this year right? ...not every single fish harvested.

Sorry for the barrage of questions hahaha

Introductions / A "far-from-formal" introduction
« on: December 31, 2013, 01:51:16 PM »
Hey everybody, i'm Jack. Pacifica local, and new to NCKA. Some of you might know me from NCUH, because i was "persuaded" to join from guys on there for the DOTY comp.

I've been fishing from my kayak for years. Mostly rockfish, and sometimes bass/trout when we go camping at lakes and stuff. Also, grew up ab diving with my family, but just recently started spearfishing a lot more. I look forward to learning a lot from everyone on here, just like I have from NCUH.

This will be my first attempt at DOTY, but I just hope to find some new species, get some new records, improve on my own hunting abilities, and meet some fellow divers/fishermen.

Happy new year everyone!     :smt003
