General Talk / Re: Registering Kayak with DMV
« on: April 01, 2024, 11:02:16 AM »
Dunno if you've registered or not but here's my $0.02, as I just did this two weeks ago with my OT PDL 120 I purchased in 2020 from Kayak City and Vanhunks Sauger I bought third party last November.

I registered my Sauger first.  I had the registration form (BOAT 101), the transfer of ownership form (REG 227) and a receipt from the seller.  I didn't know I needed the serial number from the 'yak (or off of the MSO); the DMV lady went and asked her boss who told her to generate a new number.   They use that as the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on the top of BOAT 101.  I didn't know it at the time (see below) but she charged me tax from the sale.

Next was the PDL 120, a couple days later I went in with my BOAT 101 form, my OT receipt and the serial number off of the MSO (you can find that on the back of your Owner's Manual that came with the kayak).  The cost to register was a third of the cost for registering the Sauger, she told me that the first lady charged me tax on the sale.  None was charged on the OT sale as I had the receipt showing I'd already paid the tax.

FWIW I called Kayak City to see if they could help me find my receipt from 2020 as I could not.  Their records didn't go back that far; I was lucky enough to have purchased online and could download my receipt from the online sale thru Kayak City's website.

Whats the reason for removal ?
Is it a danger to boaters who are going to fast and not looking where there going in the fog ?

Buoys aren't exactly cheap to maintain.  Mile Buoy is also the only USCG maintained buoy near Santa Cruz with a single buoy off Ano Nuevo and then Moss Landing to the south.  Fuel burn, crew time, etc. on a buoy tender capable of hoisting the sinker and maintaining the aid isn't cheap.  So, periodically, the USCG assesses the needs of these aids as technology, use, etc. evolve.  This was one of those cases.  It's actually a stellar example of how our system works.  The USCG can look at cost data and identify areas of saving and then put it to public comment and rely on the boating public to inform them if the need outweighs the cost.  Of course, Mile Buoy is one of those aids where the need/utility certainly outweigh the cost and that was made abundantly clear to the USCG.  You'll notice that they removed that aid from the proposal days before the public comment period even ended, highlighting how active the community was in making its needs known.

^^Love this

100%, Ken, Adrian and I, and I'm sure several others are ready to get salty!
It would be awesome if there was a get together set up with all the salt newbs and a few seasoned vets to show up the ropes.
Maybe start at ARW for Halibut first and then another one later for venturing out on the big blue!

Good chance I'll be there Saturday (5/11/24).  Is there a sign up or sumthin' to be in the derby?  Or just show up and put my $10 in the hat?

I may be the last American male w/o a smoker, so had to borrow my fishin' partners'.  They came out pretty yummy though.  Sly Creek Res bounty from September (thanks again to @plug-n-jug).

Kayaks / Re: Pedal power folks, need help picking a new yak.
« on: December 01, 2020, 01:18:17 PM »
The new Old Town Salty 120 PDL looks pretty good. And it’s the best warranty on the market for a pedal system.

I bought the Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL in August, have had it out a few times and love it.  Warranty and price were a big plus for me.

I don't have any experience with other 'yaks though, have only pedaled/paddled my Ascend 128T and this new boat.  Both are heavy.  I'm 6' 225lbs and have no problem standing on either.
