Native Watercraft / Standing bar ideas?
« on: July 06, 2015, 09:59:58 PM »
Does anyone know if someone has built a standing bar that fits the front hatch rails of the slayer? I got mine Wednesday and spent about 18 hours in it this weekend. I'm already standing it, but I'd love to have a brace just to give me another solid point of contact.

I am interested in how you like it compared to the Hobie. What model of Hobie did you use?

I had an Outback Mirage 2012 model. My buddy actually sold it to me when he upgraded to a slayer. I couldn't deal with the seat and ended up selling it last weekend to buy the Slayer. I'll post my thoughts on it when I've had it for a little while and spent a hundred hours in the seat or so.

Kayaks / New boat day!
« on: July 02, 2015, 08:00:05 AM »
I sold the Hobie and today my new Slayer arrived. I've got an absolute ton of rigging to do, tomorrow all the accessories are supposed to show up. I'm planning to make a late night out of it and just try to get most of it done Thursday night so all the Goop will be cured in time for this weekend. My only issue with the entire is it's missing the "thwart bar" which allows me to mount the drive to the boat. I'm going to just go pick up a piece of pipe until they can send me the proper piece.

Safety First / Re: Likelihood of capsizing Pro Angler 17T

I have a PA 12, and wanted to get into it and know what I'm messin with.  Took it out to Berkeley boat launch on a windy day and headed out just north of the pier.  Strapped everything down, secured tackle in the hatch, and flipped it over.  Boy!  Talk about Pro Tankler!    :smt013. Trying to propel yourself up and over to flip it was impossible, unless you have swim fins.  While upside down it sits in the water so tall.  With its wide beam, getting under water, grabbing both side handles with push/pull technique & trying to flip it is nearly impossible.  After grimacing and letting out a whole lot of gas  :smt044 and pulling a muscle, I was able to get it up and over.  Whew!  Heavy!  Glad I didn't have to swim it in!  Rescue ladder a must.  Front hatch took in about a gallon of water.  Definitely practice self rescue.  Hope this helps. :smt006

Did you try climbing onto it (while it was upside down) from the bow or the stern?

I had once own both PA 14 and 12 and sold them both . If you are going to fish fresh water mainly , I would pull the trigger to get either one . Now That I owned , OB, AI and Revolution 16 .. In my own two cents . If I could only have one kayak to keep . No doubt it will be the revolution 16 . It can handle rivers, lakes, and the pelagic waters . Period !

With a 350lb. weight limit it can't handle my fast ass though!  :smt044

I have only launched my PA where launch access is easy, never tried a surf launch/landing with it.  I love mine but it is a barge.  I've owned an outback, revo and PA and the PA is by far the slowest and worst to deal with in the wind.  I've heard people claiming they can hit 6-7mph on a PA but that's hard to believe.  For the surf launches, I'd prefer to stick with the outback or revo.

At this point I've done a ton of research and watched a lot of video about PA's launching and landing in the surf. I'm thinking it's not going to be the boat for me, which is a bummer because I really like the concept and layout of the thing. For now I'll be pinching my pennies and when I've got enough set aside I will probably pick up a Slayer 13 Propel. My buddy bought one last month and I have seen how it performs both launching and landing through the surf, it's impressive. Not to mention the reverse feature is pretty nice for finding structure and staying on it.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Morro Bay Kayak Fishing?
« on: June 23, 2015, 10:07:07 PM »
Will be staying a week in Cambria over the 4th of July....used to fish a lot out of Morro Bay, but never out of Cambria.  Any insights on what colors and types of jigs to use...will probably fish 3-4 days if anyone wants to hook up.
I'll probably be down to go out. I like green/clear with sparkly stuff in it and white/red always works well. Just a heads up, last Friday my buddy Mark saw a white breach twice after a seal at Leffingwell. They've been tracking one right in that area for a week or so now. They're always there, just a little scarier having it confirmed.

Kayak fishing is a trip. It's a fun activity by itself but all your fellow 'yakkers make it truly awesome.

Stability  wise the pa12 and the outback is neck n neck.both of mine were on a trailer but I mostly  launch from the boat launch.as to have it come in behind you in surf that sounds really dangerous  given the weight of the pa

He had it in front of him, swam it in from behind the boat.

You have an Outback and a Raptor, so why would you want to shore launch a PA?  Use the best tool for the job is what my Dad would always say!  Not knocking the PA, I almost want one myself.  But use it for what/where it's best at.

I got hit by a car on my motorcycle in February. The accident messed up my shoulder and I can't paddle much anymore until it gets fixed. So I moved to a Hobie for the pedals, that works great and I love it but after the raptor I want more stability than the outback offers. The PA seems to give me both the pedal drive I need and the stability that I want. Unfortunately it sounds like surf landing is the boat's Achilles heel. Some people have talked about bringing it into the beach backwards, which seems crazy to me. That's why I came and asked about it. I know once it's out there it's a rock solid platform, it's just getting it out there seems to be the issue.

I know of a guy in Socal that has one and just waits until he's in the break and swims it in from behind. That seems excessive to me but I fish the area where slam down is held regularly and we've all seen those wipeouts.

That's what the yak-gina in the OB is for.  Heck, isn't that why they put scupper holes in yaks?

It takes an act of god to get my fat ass up out of the OB seat once I'm on land, much less in the water lol. :smt044

Thank you for all the replies everyone. I just got slapped with some bad news that's going to cost me all the money I was going to use for a PA and then some. It looks like I'll be sticking with the outback for at least this year. Between selling the outback and the raptor I could probably come up with enough money to buy a used PA but then I'd have no money left over to rig it with and risking being without a boat in the middle of the season is just to much for me. As much as I'd love to have one I guess it will have to wait.

I was eyeballing the Revo 16 but with my weight I don't think it would work very well even if I really cut down how much gear I take.. I'm having a hard time understanding how a 16' boat can have such a low weight capacity, even if it is much more narrow.

As for peeing on my gear, I can wash it off lol. It's mostly about the fact that since I wear a semi dry-suit I'd rather not sit in my own piss all day. I have stood and taken a whiz out of my raptor more times than I can count.
