General Fishing Tips / Re: Mooching: 1 or 2 hooks
« on: May 18, 2016, 03:34:21 PM »
Hooks 2/0 and smaller, I would use two hooks, 3/0 and up, just one.

If there is any current or wind, threading the bait with hook in head pulls the bait backwards, right?

The longer the leader, the harder it seems to net the fish.

Maybe I need a net with a longer handle :smt012

General Fishing Tips / Re: surprising knot failure
« on: May 10, 2016, 04:51:08 PM »
The San Diego is a great knot but is a bit bulky

I typically use the palomar exclusively for braid but I was taught  one tip on a long range boat.

Tip:  The two pieces of line that travel through the eye of a Hook, swivel, etc, MUST NOT CROSS each other.

Always remember to use plenty of lubrication (spit) when you tighten and pull from the tag end not the main line.

Hope this helps

PS last tip:  inspect your knots after you tie them.  If your not 100% confident, cut it off and tie again

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Where to try Kokotat gear
« on: May 05, 2016, 04:03:19 PM »
Try calling Kayak Connection down by the harbor....they should have paddle suits on hand check out and try on.

I'll have to go by there again.  I wasn't able to spend too much time I was there.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Where to try Kokotat gear
« on: May 05, 2016, 03:56:36 PM »
I've been reading the "Waders vs. wading pants" thread.

Anyone know where I can try on some Kokotat dry suits/pants.

I live in North Santa Cruz and would be willing to drive over the hill.

I'm a bit nervous to make a large ($) purchase on the Internet without a little Tactile R&D

Thanks,
Johnny

Its all part of the game.
My method is to try and backtrack my drift direction and pop it out.

Plus if you set it up it will send you coordinates when you press the distress button. The coast guard and some commercial shipping will have your location when comming to your rescue.

I have the 870 and tried looking in to obtaining an MMSI number from BoatUS.  I think this is how they can find you when you press the button.  I believe this number registers with a Vessel registration # aka CF #'s and not a person.
BoatUS has yet to return my inquiry.
Any thoughts

Johnny

I haven't done it myself, but I read some about it when I got my radio. As I remember it is assigned to the boat not a person. I don't remember needing a cf # though.

I registered my MMSI with BoatUS for a 13' yellow kayak. So as long as I am paddling a yellow kayak, the MMSI vessel detail is valid.

Does this mean I shouldn't use it on another vessel, or don't hit the distress button on another vessel?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Flasher dodger
« on: April 25, 2016, 05:14:15 PM »
I've only used this setup (quite successfully) from a power boat.  Seems like the fish sometimes preferred a large flasher like an Abe and AL aka "kelp cutter" and sometimes the small dodger, (can't remember brand name).  Silver with white, UV, or gold glitter tape depends on water conditions/clarity/color.
Hoochies are good behind these flashy attractors.  Try stacking two.  After hoochie #1, put in  two to three cum pucks then the second with one puck then a treble maybe two.
I've also seen some using B2 squids.  18-24 inches behind the dodger, slide the B2 then treble, and 10-12 inches behind that another treble baited with fresh dead squid.
Never used live bait to troll.  If bait around is finfish, match the colors of the hoochies to the color of the bait.  If squid is around use the B2.

Good luck Hope this makes sense

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: SC harbor launch fee?

I was wondering if there is a season pass one could purchase and the cost.  I can't find info on the Harbor's website either.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'm leaning towards the GTS pro unless someone can talk me out of it.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / I need a comfy bottom and Lumbar support
« on: April 16, 2016, 02:52:53 PM »
After a long day at Pigeon, I KNOW that I need a new seat for my Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.7.  Even though fishing was a really slow, I wanted to stay out there.  I forced myself back in because I simply couldn't stand it.
I would love to find a seat with plenty of padding in the bottom and good lumbar support in the back.  I have read reviews that promote air filled seats and those that warn against the inevitable permanent deflation.  I think if I were elevated slightly, my legs could bend a little.  The lumbar support will force a better posture because I tend to slouch.  Things such as rod holders and gear pouches sound like a great addition, but I have ample space on/in the boat.  Lastly, I seem to find that some people prefer a certain seat but add an extra cushion so if there are some combos that some utilize, let me know.
I would love her some honest feedback from you all out there.

General Talk / Re: Pigeon Point Access
« on: March 24, 2016, 04:12:15 PM »
Hey SharkLure, I'll help you carry down and up if you help me.  I also work at Davenport Landing and can give you some tips about that spot too.
Regarding BigJim's diving dreams, there's a lot more interesting structure on the North side of the point.  Though probably a lot of old fishing line and hooks that have snagged near the cliffs over the years I can honestly admit that some of it came from me.
I'll be fishing there next month and I would love to meet some new friends.
