General Fishing Tips / Fish finder and transducer for Hobie compass
« on: April 08, 2023, 10:22:29 AM »
Hey all,

I’m ready to buy a fish finder for my Hobie Compass. Looking for recommendations on which cheaper models will work for finding structure and what kind of transducer fits my transducer housing. Thanks for the help!

Slay em today, boys! Looking forward to seeing some pictures so I can live vicariously. Showed up at Alameda yesterday and the conditions did not look good. White caps at the boat ramp.

If I go will most likely troll herring, and/or drift swim baits.

What kind of swim baits? I’ll bring a backup in case I run out of herring and squid.

Fish Talk / Petrale Sole on Sonoma Coast?
« on: February 15, 2023, 08:25:38 PM »
Hey everyone, I’m looking to catch some Petrale sole out on the Sonoma Coast. Not asking for spots, just if they are generally here. I hear people saying look for sandy bottoms over 100’ deep. Anyone catching them out of Bodega?

Peddling and duck hunting, creates broken drives. As for the color...wipe it down with lacquer thinner, primer real good and paint away. It isn't very durable, but it will help hide the color. Mud is your friend for touch up. I have a camo outback, and I smere mud on the hull,it really helps with the glare. Those are a couple take aways, from my experience.
Can you expand on the broken drives comment? Should I plan on just using my paddle and leaving the drive at home for duck hunts?

I'd really advice not to paint your kayak camo. They make kayaks in bright colors for safety reasons. Boaters are less likely to run over a bright colored kayaks and you'll be easy to spot in case of an emergency. I can understand the hunting part, so maybe just use that kayak blind you mentioned instead.
This was my thought as well. Thanks Herb.

General Talk / Just got a Hobie Mirage Compass
« on: December 07, 2022, 05:29:10 AM »
Hey guys, I’m new to the peddle kayak world and the Hobie world. What kind of adds on and accessories to I “need” to get? So far I’m looking at a fish finder and connector arm (duh), those jet fins, and a crate.

Also, I need to find a way to cammo it up for some duck hunting and was looking at yak gear’s kayak blind since I have the “papaya” color yak.

Any suggestions?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Are seals/sealions an issue around Doran?
« on: March 20, 2022, 06:54:35 AM »
In short: YES! I’ve had the most success with the plastic Promar Seal Proof canisters. They are slightly bigger than a coke can with a polka-dog pattern of holes and a screw top. They’ve worked for me without issue since I switched over to them. Everything else I tried there got destroyed by seals.

My intro to these sea lions was throwing a hoop net from shore and using a bait bag. Not 5 minutes after throwing it in did one sea lion surface with the hoop in his mouth and shaking it like a dog.

General Fishing Tips / Sonoma Creek with kids
« on: March 20, 2022, 06:49:23 AM »
Hey all,

I’m heading to Sonoma Creek, near the bridge on 37, with the kids. Hoping to catch some stripers with anchovies, shad, or lures. Also bringing the kids hoping they might catch some bait fish or something small off of night crawlers.

What have you all caught there? Just looking for tips to up the odds my kids can catch fish there so they’ll want to stay longer.
