General Talk / Re: Stinger hook recommendations

The ER doctor remarked how this hook was so much harder to cut than the usual hooks he sees as he was trying to remove it from my hand.  ;)

Noted.

That looks like a pretty clean cut for a seal or sealion.
I had the same thought.

Great report and very nice king!  Fat for its length.  Big congrats, and enjoy thinking of that prize every night when you go to bed for at least 3 months!  If you're a super well rounded and down to earth dude you'll hang up the fishing rod now and not obsess with getting the next one...   :smt005

Everybody here is well rounded. That's how we made it to this forum, right?

Nice!

Hit the water by 8:00 AM. Had to make a run to Bodega Bait and Tackle and that made me later than I would have liked . Launching was easy. Went under the bridge in about 10 fow at a span that must have been 40’ up. The water gets deep under the bridge and then comes right back up.

Got bit right before the bridge. Lost it - no stinger. Won’t do that again because it happened a second time as I was pulling into paradise.

Trolled up to paradise beach/the pier then started a slow drift back to Tiburon yacht club. The wind went from 9-10 mph to well above 15, at least the gusts. Wind chop was too much to handle and had to head straight in. Hugged the shore line and crossed just east if Corte Madera.

The ride back across was a little wiggly. Well, a lot wiggly. But no where near as wiggly as it would have been had I retraced my outgoing route by the 40’(ish) span.

Pulled up about a quarter mile from shore at San Quentin, kept close to shore and went under the Richmond Bridge at the first span. I def had to put my rod and net down. The distance from the water to the underside of the bridge was less than six feet. Thanks for the heads up SteveS. Disaster averted.

I’d do this again on a less windy day. But, I wouldn’t do an eight mile plus out and back.  And, I would probably turn towards China Camp not head to Paradise. If Paradise is your target, just go to the pier and suffer the hill.

The launch is awesome. I’d suspect it’s a no go on a negative tide. I suspect it’s a mud walk on tides lower than 1 ft, actually. But anything above you’ll be ok. Might have to paddle a bit through two fow, but doable.

Many, many times from that launch.
If you have rods vertical you'll either need a low tide, or move out till the bridge rises enough.
There's a good hole under it, and a nice shelf on either side.

In a big outgoing it can be hard to get back

Going out tomorrow in the AM. Looks like it’ll be a lake for most of the AM.

Isn't this open to club members only? There's also a nearby beach launch at Jean & John Starkweather shoreline park.

The launch at Jean and John Starkweather is actually what I’m referring to, but most of the posts here refer to it as the Marin Rod and Gun Club launch. Have you done this launch and if so, do you head under the bridge when you do? Wondering what it’s like under there and if it’s safe.

Dumb question. When y’all launch from here, do you go under the Richmond Bridge? Is it freaky?

I never knew there was a saltwater version of Loch Lomond until I joined NCKA
I always think of the fresh water reservoir near Scotts Valley
Where I caught my first fish, a bluegill :smt044

Makes funny things happen with Google maps.

Went kayaking for pleasure with the fam. Passed a few kayak fisher folk. One landed three stripers, one hooked up with a few shaker halis. Lots of bait and a few bust ups on the way out to the Marin Islands.

General Talk / Re: San Quentin Launch
« on: May 30, 2021, 07:01:13 AM »
I’ve launched by remillard park there’s a little bit of parking off sir Francis, it’s where the wind surfers launch . It’s pretty rocky and on a strong negative you might get a little muddy but not too bad.

This is the spot I was talking about. Thanks Loebs. I’ll give it a try when the tide isn’t swinging so low.

General Talk / San Quentin Launch
« on: May 29, 2021, 08:59:27 AM »
Did an initial scout of the San Quentin launch site. Doesn’t look too bad getting to the water. Tide was about -1.6 when I visited. Anyone know if there’s a mud walk in store if you come back at low tide? Looked like the case but I wasn’t prepared to walk out there and get a real-time sample this AM.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: el cheapo DIY sinkers

Or you could go to Bodega Tackle. The guy that runs the shop there makes the best torpedo sinkers around IMHO. They only have connectors on one side of the weight - which I think prevents snags in some instances. However, I like your approach here because I don't think construction stakes are made out of lead. They probably rust when left in Davey's Locker - which is a great outcome for unexpectedly liberated fishing gear.

Kayaks / Re: Outback or PA
« on: May 09, 2021, 06:57:16 PM »
When I guide people on PA's we have The Talk first - I explain that if their drive fails and wind, current and/or swells keep them from effectively paddling the beast, they may have to anchor it up and hop on my kayak to get back to shore.

Outback = the state of the art for the sport at this point.

PA is too big.

Good luck~

PA - waaayyy too big and heavy.
