Safety First / Re: Today was self rescue practice day.
« on: July 26, 2020, 05:05:48 AM »
I took time and worked with my PFD. I got it fitting much better. Yesterday fishing I was amazed. About half the people out on the water didn’t have a life vest on.

Mine needed to be cinched tighter. Still not uncomfortable, but it didn’t disappear; I felt it’s presence.

Learning as I go.

my friend and coworker JUST showed me a picture of his backyard.  he has a pool!!

i shamelessly asked.  he agreed to let me flip and unflip and cliimb aboard in the safety of his pool!!  it will be nice to be able to really work the problem and explore for hand grips and such.

yakgina!!  i am stealing that!!  hahhahahhaha..

the knot i'm best with is what my buddy called the Alberto Knot.  looks like an Albright to me.  (similar? Same?)

anyways, right or wrong..it is my best knot with my eyesight and sausage fingers.  it hasnt failed me yet.

Safety First / Today was self rescue practice day.

My kayak is a 2019 Hobie Compass.

I successfully climbed back aboard.  But two important “lessons-learned”. I really need a better hand grip on the far side of the boat as I pull myself up.  Good handholds on a Compass are scarce!  I think a couple of t-handles on paracord will make the move easier.  Right now I used a rock climbers fingertip hold on the tiny accessory rail.  I got tired after subsequent attempts. I had to bob there to rest once.   Second lesson.  My PFD rides up on me somewhat. I need to cinch it down tight, or buy another one.  The PFD really helps kayak entry. I don’t think I can’t do it without the momentum the vest gives me. I come up, push myself into the water and kick/pull as the vest bibs me back up.

I’ll keep practicing and refreshing my skills.   I’ll flip the kayak too.  Maybe in a friends swimming pool. I think I have the strategy for that. The mirage drive hole is a great handhold.

Thanks for the “safety first” section. It motivated me to drop off the side of my kayak today.  No fishing.

thanks you all.

i simply want a new rod because a friend switched over to all left-hand reels and he gave me a couple of his righties.  i have a loose baitcaster floating around that needs a rod.

i have been fishing off the shore at a like a hike to, and i did build up a spinning rig to cast further.  so i have that for lighter presentations.
i'll take my time.

General Fishing Tips / Kayak bass fisher-people. Fishing rod length?
« on: July 21, 2020, 07:13:05 PM »
I have one rod (bait-cast) remaining after a decade and a half of not fishing.  It’s a 6-foot gLoomis I got when a sporting goods store went out of business.  It’s light and I’m surprisingly accurate with my cast.

I want a second rod.  I’ll stand (eventually) up in my boat as my confidence increases. Flipping etc.

I’m super confused to what would be advantageous sitting so relatively low in the water.  A 7-footer?   Longer?

Any tips?  Not interested in breaking the bank these days. It’s just a hobby at this point.

I haven’t posted in a long time.  I lurked.

Reminder.   I grew up in a desert.  My water-life involved a swimming pool. There Is was a bass lake a few hours away and my brother did buy a bass boat. Having said that, I was never totally comfortable in big bodies of water.

But a kayak always intrigued me.  I’ll never own a (big)boat.  To much commitment with respect to tow vehicle, storage, etc. at least not where I live.

I bought a Hobie Compass a few weeks ago.  I liked the simplicity. I like the relatively lighter weight.  I waited for my PFD order to show up and then  I took a few trips  in a local lake just to use the boat. Get familiar.   No fishing gear. I found a “last-years” model and saved a few bucks.  It fits; kind of in the bed if my pickup truck.

(Oh - Covid-19 (boredom) did rekindle my love for bass fishing. I would hike up solo to fish a lake I mountain bike past.  I was killing them there.  Those Smaller bass was the push I needed to buy the kayak.  I wanted more!)

Well yesterday was my maiden bass voyage. I fished Fountaingrove lake, just a few minutes from my home. I haven’t used a bait-cast reel for a decade, but it came back quickly and I was fairly accurate.  I cannot stand up comfortably yet.  My movements are awkward and jerky. Made me nervous. (I’ll get there)

But I caught this.  Technically my second bass. My first bass was all of 5” long. Haha.

This one was about 19”. The nearby golfers were cheering me on.   So much fun.   I need to learn how to take a decent selfie. :)

I can’t wait to get confident enough to go into really big bodies of water.  I’d love to catch a rockfish.

Just for info. I just soaped my dog up with the nearest shampoo and dish soap. Worked well.

The house?  Actually stunk just as much. I burned toast. Until my smoke detectors all started screaming. Then aired  it out.  One application did the trick.   Two slices of bread burned until it flamed in my toaster.

a few weeks ago..my wife did utter the words, "hey, maybe you should buy a kayak!"

her work reimburses her (up to a certain $amount) towards healthy gear..a kayak qualifies.  ahem.

quick intro and a little about myself.

i am an avid wilderness guy..getting older, getting slower.  staying in shape (well, trying) by mtn biking.  that is until i crashed hard.  hahah..i now find it painful to pull back my hunting bow.  i'll heal.

Moved to Santa Rosa a few years ago, and some of my Construction jobs put me on Hwy1, staring at the beaches.  hmmm..i figured i should rekindle my love of fishing.

2 weeks ago, i went into a fishing store and asked, "okay, what do i need?"  zero research, at the mercy of the salesman.

i now own a salmon/steelhead rod setup..and a fistful of terminal gear.  learned some new terms, like "backing", "top shot".  he showed me a few knots..double uni, the Alberto.

i still dont know jacksquat, but i have taken several surf perch.  to say i am hooked is an understatement.  i bought chest waders..and now searching for a new rod/reel.  i still need to go back and find that fisherman..i forgot what he spooled me up with..hahah.

it's go time.  my good friend is coming up from SoCal to fish with me.  our wives are gonna be...who knows.?  maybe i'll keep a spa day gift card in my backpocket for emergencies.
