if I could start my kayak adventure over, I would skip the motor

I definitely thought of you when I wrote my reply, Mark.  Never felt you needed it at all, and that's the only type of person I'd want to have a motor.  Another multi-trip client on that list is Schwegg.  There are others.

I'm not slamming anyone who chooses a motor for the yak.  I am definitely wanting to get my advisory out there though, that using a motor if it will get you past your capabilities to return without it = bad news.

Hey Eric, on the times we have been out together I only used the motor once. The reason I used it was because you kept telling me what a powerful kayaker Davethesynthguy is. After a limit of rock fish you suggested we try for some halibut, and I caught three of those. I was beat even with the motor, and like you said Dave was still going strong. I think we were on the water from 7-4. Looking forward to the next time.

I use really large swim baits, or slow pitch jigs so I’m hoping this type of setup will work:

I’ll carry some extra weight just in case.

Similar distrust of the science used to determine fishing regulations is happening in other areas as well. This article is worth a read:

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak loading on tailgate spoiler

I do have an older Yakima round rack, and a Thule square rack. They both have loading bars that extend to the side for loading. The mounting clips would need to be changed for your vehicle if available. Free

I am using the Thule Hulivator now.

On one of my past vehicles with an automatic hatch lift I was able to turn it off  so I could open manually. Worth checking the owners manual to see if that’s an option with the Odyssey.

CA Regulations / Re: REPORT -2024 Nearshore Rockfish Season Survey
« on: February 03, 2024, 07:16:53 AM »
If NorCal doesn’t stand for Northern California what does it stand for? And if it stands for something else why is the AOTY limited to Northern California?

“Waterway Rule - All fish entered must be caught within the northern and eastern California borders (the entire waters of Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake are allowed) and north of the southern borders of the following counties: Monterey, Kings, Tulare and Inyo. Fish caught from waterways with restricted access to the public, such as members-only or private waterways or aquaculture operations are not allowed. Fish caught from waters where anglers have to pay on a per fish basis, such as trout farms, are not allowed.”

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for doing such a great job in putting  this information together that was requested by CDFW Staff to our petition working group. I'm sure it will be useful for them in coming up with recommendations to the Fish and Game Commission.

Outdoorplay has sales on drysuits fairly often. This is the one I have been using for about 6 years: https://www.outdoorplay.com/products/kokatat-supernova-angler-gore-tex-pro-dry-suit

AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY
« on: January 22, 2024, 04:37:24 PM »
One of the reasons I only used my motor once last year was for AOTY points. I would be ok for their use for all, or for those over 65 years of age.

General Talk / Re: EBRPD or EBMUD Annual Pass?
« on: January 21, 2024, 11:36:43 AM »
I bought a senior pass last year, and for this year too. Need to go about 10 times to break even. Paid for itself last year. Fished Chabot, Contra Loma, and Shadow Cliffs.

Went to Del Valle the last time out and waited at the inspection station for 20 minutes. Two workers saw me waiting but never came over and said anything to me. Got frustrated, and went to Shadow Cliffs instead.

Wanted To Buy / Re: WTB: Thule 65" load bars

I have a set of ones that I cut down to 58”. When they were longer people kept bumping their heads on them getting out of the car. They are ridged, and rectangular in shape. Free if you are interested towers with clips that fit Mitsubishi Outlander. Located in Albany

I started out with a peddle drive but the weight was unbearable when just starting out, and not knowing the easy ways to load/unload. Sold it and purchased an Eddyline Caribbean that only weighed 50lbs. After some long days salmon trolling I decided to get a Torqeedo 403. After a few times out I started using it for everything.

From the beginning I started getting my line caught in the propeller, and with the motor mounted on the back you need to go back to the launch, have someone help, or jump in to clear the line. The last time I snagged the propeller was at HMB near the red can. I jumped in cleared it, and continued fishing. I never go further than I’m comfortable paddling. I dropped the throttle in the water dealing with a halibut, and the throttle died costing $350.00.

Due to the frustrations, I have been using it less, and only used it once last year. So if I could start my kayak adventure over, I would skip the motor, and get a Revo 13. Although I’m getting pretty proficient at paddling with the Eddyline so it may be a while before I make a change.

Wow that’s quite a fish. EBRPD does plant some monster size fish in their lakes. I’ve been to Shadow Cliffs four times in the last month and half. Usually troll for about four hours, and if I haven’t caught any I switch to power bait, and have done well. Only 2 fish trolling over that timeframe.

I almost always troll a J-7 Firetiger on one rod and switch out the other rod every 30 minutes or so. I will be there at least one of the days next weekend. Thanks for the report.

CA Regulations / Re: Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The F&G Commission hired a consulting firm to train staff, and commissioners on JEDI. I watched their presentation, and listened to the public comments. The commenters stated that only 5% of the general public hunt, or fish. So to them JEDI meant that the commission members should reflect the general public and be 95% non-hunters, or fishers.
