Sad to read this. It says he had a headlight, but no word on any other safety gear.
another site says no wet suit or PFD headlight was found but not on a head.

Word of mouth from the campground is that they were wearing waders w/ no belt, and no PFD or wetsuit.  They were paddling after dark, in rough and windy conditions, then capsized.  Some people from Lawsons saw the headlight flashing, but ultimately they disappeared.  Sad

General Fishing Tips / Re: Yelloweye RF?
« on: December 28, 2022, 11:47:26 AM »
Juvenile yelloweye do have white striping on the side, but it's different striping than canaries have.  Both canaries and yelloweye have smooth chins, as well, making the whole thing tricky sometimes.

I agree 100% on the canary ID.  There are a lot of yelloweyes out there too though, good job on playing it safe.

Those poor halibut are going to get hammered next year.

100%, and I wouldn't be surprised if new hali regs come after that...

Situation 2:

I went out with a friend who catches 10”-12” rockfish (preferably blacks and blues) to use as live bait to target lingcod. He uses a dedicated RF bait-fishing rod with a smallish diamond jig, catches a RF bait-fish and transfers it to his treble/single-hook/8-ounce-ball-weight/bottom-fishing setup on another rod.  Not sure how many RF baitfish he went through on the day, but I’m going to say it was a lot (more than 10). At the end of the day the only RF he came home with were two big vermillion.

Legal?

Any rockfish you use as live bait are supposed to count toward your limit.

...micro locations like Tomales get hit extremely hard, and most locals I've spoken with up there say the fishing has deteriorated in recent years.

I've heard stories of the 50-60#  cali hali that used to get pulled out of Tomales 60-70 years ago.  In about 20 trips, I've never caught one (of any size) there myself, but I probably just suck at catching halibut.

General Talk / Re: Bluefin at Shelter Cove

I'd heard they were as close as 4 miles out.

Thats crazy!  I figured "at Shelter Cove" just meant "launched at Shelter and went 30 miles out", 4 miles sounds pretty close for a fish like that!

Looks like big winds predicted at FR.

Yeah, Wednesday is looking real windy on the coast.  17+mph in FR area, and 20-30mph in Blowdega.

General Talk / Re: Walleye Tournament Cheaters Busted
« on: October 02, 2022, 08:23:38 AM »
This has gone viral everywhere.  Apparently that guy has won $3Mil+ in cash, new fishing boats, and other prizes over the last 20 years.  He won some big $$$ tourney suspiciously last year, and was DQ'd after failing a required polygraph.  I hear he's been trashing the organizers and was going to sue them for those prizes.... until now.  Wonder how long he's been stuffing lead (and fillets) in his stringers?   Guess they need to start gutting the winning fish.   :smt044

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Tomales

I was there today 9am-3pm for nada.  Jigged up some live anchovies, but couldn't convince anything to bite.  Tomales skunk #28973894 for me  :smt005 .

A guy loading up his trailer said he released a leopard shark, and saw one boat with 1 keeper.  Another older couple on an inflatable boat had a thresher they kept for dinner.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Bleed 'em better?
« on: August 25, 2022, 09:37:20 AM »
I've been experimenting with pressure bleeding and I am impressed so far. I normally clean salmon on the water, but last weekend it was rough and I was close to home so I bled them but didn't clean them.

When I got home I used a clean garden sprayer (only ever used for water) with a pipette tip and a salt solution. You can see the blood that came out of an already-bled fish, and how there is almost no blood in the meat when cut.

Obviously you want to be very careful about the cleanliness of the water you are bleeding with since it will permeate the meat.

This is exactly the kind of setup that came to mind when people started talking about pressure bleeding.  I have a very similar rig I made for pressure bleeding my car's brake system.

Here is another good one... The most popular youtuber... FML...

At 12:00 in this video he explains that after salmon on board, can't use barbed hook any more, and he even said it "let's pinched down the barb"...  and here you go.

In another recent video he kept a hook and line sea cucumber, which I don't think that is legal either.

If you go through FML videos, there are plenty more examples...  Off the top of my head, one video where he is shorefishing, and keeping fish in a small tidepool puddle as a makeshift livewell until he can catch larger fish and "safely release" the ones he has already legally retained...  Another vid, he retains a female dungee and chucks it into his boat because fishing is slow.  Later on when he shows his catch for the day, he has clearly high-graded to a limit of males, and the female he kept and chucked into the boat earlier isn't shown or mentioned.

Thanks for your response. I will try to fish on Tuesday Aug. 16, if anyone is around? Heading to Albion/Mendocino on Wednesday Aug 17, unless (?) Sonoma is fishable and is doable?

Sonoma forecast for 8/16 is currently 8.5 NW swell @ 8 seconds.  Way too rough for my comfort.
