General Talk / Anyone know what this plug could power?
« on: June 13, 2021, 11:15:24 PM »
Just bought a used kayak and found this cable zip tied to the mount but can't figure out what it would power.  Theres already a fishfinder thats hooked up with a different power cable as well as transducer that goes straight to the fishfinder so can't figure out what this would go into. Any thoughts on what else people usually use a power cable for in their kayaks?

General Talk / Lost Hobie Mirage Drive - Alameda Rock Wall
« on: May 26, 2020, 03:52:18 PM »
Hey all, was at Alameda over the weekend, did anyone see or find a set of hobie mirage drive?  has turbo fins.  I was packing up my stuff in my car and someone came by to ask me about the fishing and got distracted.  I may have left it on the wooden fence area at the back of the parking spots.  By the time i realized and turned around i did not see it there anymore.

Any help is appreciated!

General Talk / Re: Anyone fish near 17 mile drive in Monterey?

I live right next to 17 mi drive. THIS INTERACTIVE MAP is currently accurate for our area as to where you can fish or not. I'd say take a nice drive down to Garappata so your wife can enjoy hiking while you fish (if she's into it... the trails are super flat and beautiful there). Just about any turn out in that area has access to rock fishing. Otherwise, I'd stray away from 17mi drive (Pebble Beach) and hit up the areas in Pacific Grove or better chance for better fish at Southern Carmel.

Thank you so much!  Any recommendations in South Carmel?  Looking at the maps there seems to be some nice cliffs south of the Main carmel-by-the-beach area where there is a neighborhood.  Also im assuming the areas marked blue for conservation areas in your map is ok to fish?

Trust the DFG maps over third-party maps. You can’t fish anywhere in the Asilomar SMR. Once you’re past the boundary, you can fish along 17-Mile Drive provided there’s designated coastal access (read: a parking lot and beach). The entire 17-Mile Drive area (once you’re through the checkpoint) is owned by the Pebble Beach Company, and they can be real pieces of sh*t when it comes to coastal access (I’m not bitter about it at all...  :smt013). They have their own rangers and they’ll ticket you in a heartbeat if you’re trying to find secluded access down the hillsides (since they’re the property owner landward of MHW, you’re technically trespassing on their property even if you’re not trespassing on a private residential lot). You can fish from Fan Shell Beach and maybe a few other places once you get out of the Asilomar SMR, but IMO shore fishing along 17-Mile is more trouble than it’s worth. Better to enjoy the drive and then head south to Carmel or north to Monterey to put a line in.

Thank you so much for this! better to be safe than sorry.

Planning to take the wifey a trip down there this weekend and planning to just park off some shore / rocky areas to throw my line out.  Anyone have any recommendations of fishing spots here?  Or any info of where is it ILLEGAL to fish please let me know as well.  Im a bit confused by some of the maps of where you're allowed to fish/not fish so this would be helpful.

I also found this link below which seems to show you can fish along the coast of Asilomar Reserve area but the area is marked in Red in the DFG site, so unsure if I can or cannot fish here: http://wiki.recfin.org/index.php/Category:Recreational_Fishing_Sites_Monterey_214

General Talk / Re: Lost crab trap, any penalty?
« on: May 28, 2019, 02:17:43 PM »
Went on skiff in Santa Cruz and dropped a crab pot ~2 miles away from the wharf.  Went to go pick it up at the end of the day but the weather got super choppy and dangerous and had to turn around.  Are there any penalties for not picking up the crab pot?  Its got my license and phone number on it.

Thinking about making a trip out there on a kayak to pick it up later this week.

Whereabouts? I saw one out there today that did not look right (buoy was submerged most of the time). If you have GPS coordinates or even a good description of where it would be, somebody might be able to find it...

ah wow, it may have been mine. i used a detergent bottle as a buoy (white with pink cap) and it was a little submerged where i dropped it since my line was only 100 ft and it turns out the area is about 90 ft.  Approximate location is near the middle of the rocky terrain straight north of the wharf ~2 miles out.

General Talk / Re: I’ll pass !!!!!!!!!!!

what is best practice if you do run into a shark out in the waters? is it best to stay still and let it pass you up (i.e. let it knock your kayak a few times and hope it thinks youre not interesting and swims off) or pedal as fast as you can back to shore but risking drawing more attention to the shark thinking youre a fleeing prey?

quick question, when you measure you crabs how do you usually hold the crab--- pressing and holding the claws in and then measuring or holding the bottom two legs and then measure?  I noticed if i do the latter sometimes the crab becomes a keeper, but if i press in the claws its short by like a thin hair...either way i just toss it to be safe when its that close

Probably dont need the sail so will most likely sell that for $50 or so.

thanks for all the tips! super appreciate it.  ive been taking my frenzy in the ocean and its only 8 ft, albeit i dont go too far out.  also to be fair , the sport is only 5 inches from being 10 ft (if that makes any difference).  i have some other storage issues (dont live in a big home with a spacious backyard) so i need a smaller kayak to stow away.  otherwise the bigger hobies out there would have been my first choice.

General Talk / Buying first Hobie, any tips?
« on: June 24, 2018, 10:16:40 PM »
Hello, currently own an ocean kayak frenzy and planning to jump to a hobie kayak.  The model im looking at is the hobie mirage sport since it's similar in size to the frenzy ( 9'7" and ~ 58 lbs) since i plan to carry it myself to various beaches.

I plan to ocean fish with it, any tips of anyone using this in the ocean or any concerns i should watch out for when buying this kayak?  Im looking to buy for ~$1200 for a used 2009 model.  Not sure if that's a good deal but that's my budget.  I believe it comes with just the standard fins.  Appreciate any feedback!
