Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Lovers point and first ling!!!
« on: December 30, 2017, 06:27:19 PM »
Went out with my brothers today and decided to do two separate dives at the same location. We were blessed with 35 foot viz, the first dive we caught some nice rockcod and perch for our crab pots tomorrow and I saw a big ling and when I pulled the trigger... I missed  :smt013 went it extremely frustrated. We lost the tip to my brothers gun so we went and bought another one and I got a new firing line for my pathos because the other line wouldn't fit in the really small hole. Anyways the second dive we went out into about 30 feet and didn't see much, again we got a good amount of crab bait and then I looked into a whole and there she was... the head of a big lingcod. I knew if I missed it I would never forgive myself so I took my time and blasted it in the head and if measured 29 inches!!! I screamed so loud when I got it someone thought we were in trouble and called the fire department and there were about 5 cop cars and 3 fire trucks that came up to where we were diving and asked if everything was okay. And then they drove away. Ended up being the best dive I have had in a while and a great way to end the year!

Just got my new pathos 60 and it does not have a safety and my parents don't like it so they want to return it and get a new one. Do u guys notice anything different about the no safety?

Cabeza has good advice adding a floatline. I've been through everything from rope to poly braid to gannet. But for up here, the guys at Red Triangle have this one called dark waters SKINNY. It's the bomb! Thin, much smaller and easier to pack, doesn't kink like some of the regular thicker float lines. It's also really stretchy. Be sure to get it in white tubing- if you leave your gun or (hopefully one of these years leave your ab iron) on the bottom on a dark day to mark something, the white is the only color that is easy to follow all the way down. The clear ones, regardless of what the color the cord inside is aren't nearly as easy to see.
I have never thought of using a float line, And I dont quite understand how it works. Is it attached to a bouy? does it float your gun? Also I feel like having all that line, and then if you go into shallower water then you have a lot of extra line that just tangles. Could you explain to me how it works? Thanks so much!

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Tides and visibility?
« on: November 15, 2017, 07:35:45 AM »
Hey I was just looking at the report for Stillwater and the swell seems like it's very small, but the tide is just ripping, do you guys find that ride makes a big deal on viz? Because I don't know if it is worth heading out yet.

Hey, after reading a post about diving for dungies, I was curious if people thought about adding it to the species for DOTY and AOTY?

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Stillwater 10/7
« on: October 09, 2017, 07:30:54 PM »
Me and my buddy woke up at 6 loaded up the kayaks and drove on down to Stillwater cove. We launched the yaks around 9 went out. Swell wasn't hitting the cove at all really so our hopes were high. We got to our spot and hopped in. From the surface I could see about 15 feet but when I got to the bottom I couldn't see the tip of my gun  :smt013. We tried to work with it but couldn't do we decided to quit so we don't get any further behind. :smt012 That first ling has yet again escaped  :smt011. Oh well it was still great to be out and learn the waters but we will be out there again soon to get that ling!

Also if it is not fishable there, do you guys know of any other safer spots?

I think it will be surgy and messy...longer period south swell coming in...

But the kiddy pool could be ok, just depends on angle that swell comes in...

Watch the surge underwater, make sure yaks are anchored securely, be prepared to land on stairs (big 5.8 foot high tide right before noon), and be willing to call it if gets too nasty...

I think early Saturday AM is your best bet given what I am seeing...

Be safe and have fun if you go!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim
Thanks for that! I think we will go scope it out first, then make our decision.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Honest opinions Needed!
« on: October 05, 2017, 03:54:00 PM »
So I was just looking at the weather forecast for stillwater cove... not ideal  :smt010. But I still want to make an effort to make it out in search for that ling  :smt007. I have only been out there once and it was pretty nice, but whats your opinion on the safety this weekend for a newbie and a group of people coming with. Thank you!
