Hi,

Most of the time, when I fish in the ocean, I just look at swell height and period.  I typically target 3-4 ft at 8-10 sec which is my comfort range.  Recently I notice swell energy too but haven't really compared it so I don't know how it affects fishing from a kayak.

For instance, take the following two days...which is better for fishing from a kayak
Day 1) 3.4 ft @ 13 sec., swell energy = 400 KJ
Day 2) 4.7 ft @ 6.4 sec., swell energy = 165 KJ

Thanks

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing with two rods at the same time

My advice is to always base your fishing on your own standards for honor - it's all about what we do when no one is watching.

For sure. I fish by the regulations but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out on something. I’m new to fishing from a boat in the ocean. Most of my experience has been in the bay. Thanks for the clarifications everyone

General Fishing Tips / Fishing with two rods at the same time
« on: April 10, 2021, 08:48:29 AM »
Hi All. I sometimes see kayakers fish with two rods at the same time in the ocean. I can’t find the regs that state when this is ok or when it’s not. The second rod stamp seems like it is only for inland fishing. So when is this allowed in California? Thanks

Hi OaklandJoel,

I have the same kayak and I use a farmer John wetsuit.  I thought that I would fish more during the winter months but that's not the case.  I believe people tend to wear dry suits during winter months. No chaffing at all in a wetsuit in the kayak.

Tell her your shoulder hurts now and so you need a pedal style kayak instead.

I use a lexa 300 with 30 lb line.  I like this lightweight set up

Hi Vash,

On the titan 10.5 the boonedox attaches to the rear rails. No drilling required. If you want to try it out let me know and we can meet up.

Now I see how a completely swamped kayak reacts as you try to get it back to shore. He barely was able to balance himself within minutes of pumping it out. If we had found him in the middle of the lake I think our only option would be for him to get onto one of our kayaks belly down and we get him to shore ASAP. Does anyone have any suggestions for how we would do this if he was in the middle of a lake? The water temp was like 55F and air temp was kinda cold too. Can anyone share if you have had to rescue someone when the other persons kayak was not able to float with them onboard? Thanks all.
If a swimmer floats vertically in the water while hanging onto the stern of your kayak, it's a lot of work to move them.  You have to ask them to kick their feet so they lie horizontally in the water.  And it will be easier to tow them if they can pull their chest up onto the stern of your kayak and lie on the rear cargo area.

I’ll try that with a buddy this summer. I have an outback and wonder if having someone lying back there would disable my steering.

MauiBen could you see any damage to the outside of the boat at that location that could have been due to user caused? If it was a defect I hope that bass pro shop does the right thing and returns the guy’s money back. The kayaker looked relatively young and being that it was his first kayak, I feel bad for him. It’s not a cheap kayak by any means.

Another thing that got me thinking was that I should bring a small roll of gorilla tape with me for times like this. We could have pumped his boat out and taped the outside and maybe he could have gotten back to the ramp by himself with us beside him. Luckily shadow cliff was a small lake and he was able to walk back to the ramp by himself as we towed his boat in. Now I see how a completely swamped kayak reacts as you try to get it back to shore.
