Gearing Up and Rigging Up / First attempt hollow core loop
« on: March 23, 2023, 10:59:42 AM »
Bueno no bueno….satisfied but not… I’m so cheap I used an E string from a guitar which is doable.  This is 130lb.  Strong ass loop but the final needle extraction failed.  Hope I can manage this skill with 60lb hollow core…stay tuned… :smt006

Stealth / Working on my stroke...
« on: February 16, 2023, 10:34:58 AM »
Calm down boys... :smt005

The stealth has been parked too long and the fish showing in the bay is minor.  Jonzin' fo da glide.
My buddy Marc is a paddling fanatic mega enthusiast and I'm going way light gear today.  No backrest, paddle jacket and splash pants, no booties, waterproof socks.   Doing sprint intervals until I lose my form then rest for a bit, then push it again, every catch and exit counts.  Sit tall.  All core with heel pressure power transfer full body mindset.   I hope to start with 5 minute stroke slams working up longer intervals and eventually finding out a consistent strength for distance.

Launching from Paradise on the low..on da wattah' from 1-2 then back to work...stay tuned.. that's what I'm trying to do...

Recipes / Canning Herring 2023
« on: January 19, 2023, 09:16:12 AM »
Total newb yet doing my homework.  Seasonings, pressure canner science, jar size choices.  I left the bucket in my cooler and dumped ice on it overnight in the van.  Dumped them all out in the big cooler this morning and put salt and water to begin cleaning for some bait storage and soon to be choosing an amount to scale and gut.  Freeze until I'm ready to can em'.  Massive jiz and slime and some roe in raw product...kinda nasty yet real, I think TLA digs the jiz but he can comment on that fishy aspect if he finds this thread...stay tuned... :smt006

General Talk / Blessed Thanksgiving to NCKA
« on: November 24, 2022, 10:23:52 AM »
I am grateful for all y'all and those I haven't met yet.  I hope this season treats you well.

For those in grief I pray comfort.

For those in joy I pray hospitality and continued good times.

For those recovering in health, strength.

On fishy note, I used sturgeon leader material, 80lb, to tie up the turkey legs before throwing in da oven.

Good good thanksgiving to you!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Trading in the Stealth
« on: November 13, 2022, 08:50:03 PM »
for da Kraken for crabbing...she's sitting in a garage jonzin' for some salt...

Launched at muir today for 3 keepers.  Love it for surf launching and landing but for crabbing she's a wiggly one...I think I need the Cadillac back.  Garden seat, 29.5 width, "crab puller" as John mentioned.  35 extra pounds unloaded, oooo, might pay a price there but with my wheeleez all is well.  I've launched that beast through the surf as well so we'll see.  Crabby spots aren't always surf launches anyhoo...

Today I prayed that any crisis wasn't too loaded but I still had one.  The rope in one trap snagged on my rudder.  I turned 180 to attempt to jar it off with my paddle and it was futile.  Ok, self talk time...do I have to get in the water and release it, my buddy Marc does it for line that gets tied up...I can do this.  I've never practiced reentry in the stealth in the open ocean.  It seemed calm enough "ish" and I found the courage to leap off.  Line released.

Here we go...grab this somewhat light beast and leap up while pulling the yak under me...fail, almost flipped the kayak over.  Tired, forgot my sandwich and vitamins and I'm running on caffeine alone...

Round two, kick...pull up...same...almost turtled and rested...hmmm....boat sees me and I wave but they don't repond...no panic...

Round three...I thought about going from the stern like a surfboard but ended up on the opposite side by my shark shield and touched the buzz...I cannot remember if I turned it off but I may have, kinda the wrong time to do it but that thing lights up the water around it.

Something worked, must have been the way the current worked plus answered prayer. From the other side, the current was drifting me along and as I tried to seal hop aboard I couldn't fight the current expecting the yak to go under me but when I tried from the other side, my seal kick had some momentum with the current and I got across and balanced without flipping.  Freakin' phew to da max.

Was a lil' nauseous from all the swell activity but managed to press on.  The amount of strength needed for crabbing has no respect for reentry if you fly off your yak.  Im grateful for the training yet it coulda gone sideways at any given time.  Inspired to get in shape and not do stupid things.

Side note...the best horseradish I've found for cocktail sauce is Atomic at Smart n Final... :smt006

Recipes / Union lunch break
« on: August 18, 2022, 12:08:43 PM »
I’ve had a hard time finding Braunschweiger in my cheapo grocery and an old timer reminded me of an Italian deli that has good liverwurst.  I bought a lb of liverwurst and a pound of mortadella.  Feel free to embellish in case I missed sumpin’ besides a glass a red at lunch which wouldn’t be good for da haircuts…

Sourdough
Mayo
Mortadella
Red onion
Hard Parmesan slices
Slice of American
Liverwurst

Bon appetito… :smt006

Recipes / Halibut Musubi
« on: July 03, 2022, 07:42:52 PM »
Minor success, flavor was onolicious, gotta work on patty shape but not too concerned.

Sticky Rice
Added rice vinegar, sugar, salt and whipped with wooden spoon...

Halibut trim and cheeks
    salt
    white pepper
    touch sesame oil
Diced to uniform smaller chunks and bind with halibut in food processor minced to mushy.

Sauce
1 to 1 to 1 mirin, tamari, sugar
udduh sauce, brush mayo, squeeze lemon drip shoyu...

To make paddies, slapped on non stick with OO and shaped to spam size.  lightly browned barely then removed.  Plenty falling apart but kept gentle shape and moved to plate.
Bushed with egg then added panko to refry and was happy with consistency and odd shaped paddies falling apart but some stayed molded.  Assemble in chaos and kitchen is a tornado.  Kids gobbled em'.  One batch had green onion sprinkled between sauce and paddie.  One batch plain teriyaki, one mayo lemon juice shoyu. Much to master but so glad I did it... :smt007 :smt006
