General Talk / Boston whaler project boat
« on: May 18, 2018, 08:32:16 PM »
After buying this beauty 5 years ago. I am finally getting her put together. Put a lot of work in to her the past 7 months. Life is busy and putting a boat together can be put on the back burner but I'm shooting to have her on the water in the next couple months.
Stripped down and sanded on the inside.

Bed lined and ready for seat, console and motor.

2012 90Hp XL that I covered to a long shaft

Center console that is still in the works
I will post more pictures as I finish things up and start to get the boat put together.

General Talk / The unsinkable legend lived up to its name!!!
« on: July 08, 2016, 05:17:09 PM »

So yesterday a friend and I went out and fished off the Marin coast for Salmon and rockfish/lingcod in his 2013 17 foot Montauk. The boat ride out was a little bumping but not all that bad. As the day went on the weather got better. At about 3:30-4:00 we decided to head in. The run to the gate was not bad boat handle everything great! As we were coming up the Golden gate. About a 1/4 mile from the gate. We came off one wave and all we could say was SH#T!!! We came off the wave and submarine the next wave. We looked up and the F#%^ing Stern was under the water. Water coming over the starboard side gunnle. With quick think my buddy fired the motor back up and hit the bulge pump. I jumped to the bow to help with the weight. Then we both started bailing water. After a couple long minutes the stern was out of the water and we were OK!! The wave smashed up the front ice chest and through the lid 30 to 40 yards from the boat. Needles to say if we were in an aluminum boat I don't think things would have turned out like they did. The whaler did amazing being over half full with water. And that is why I am suck a whaler fan! I have a 1973 whaler of my own. Best boats ever built in my opinion.

General Talk / Quest for my big brown trout
« on: May 24, 2016, 08:53:45 PM »
So I have been fishing hard the last few weekends at my usual lake Frenchmeadows. It's usually good to me. But these past few trips have provide nothing for me. Fishing is fishing some days you don't catch any thing but this very usually. Water temp is in the mid to high 50s 15 to 20 foot visibility with a thermocline around 25 feet. Fish holding around 45 feet. Been trolling from the top all the way down to 50 feet. Tried jigging with no luck. Had a couple fish fallow the jig all the way to the kayak. One was a nice brown. Big brown. Been thinking of hitting up another lake this weekend. But still can't decided if I should stick with frenchmeadows or try some where new.  Any one have any thoughts on a new lake that holds Browns or what else I could try to entice a bite at frenchmeadows?

General Talk / Donner lake Mackinaw fishing
« on: May 15, 2016, 06:43:39 PM »
Has any one fished for Macks on Donner lake? And if so what technique did you use and where are some good places to launch the yak? I have neve fished donner and I have never caught a mack and my goal this year is catch just one. More than one would be nice but it's kinda a bucket list fish for me. Any info would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks fishdog

Craftsmen's Corner / 2016 Hobie outback/PA Jr
« on: March 12, 2016, 02:20:26 PM »
In the 2016 Hobie parts catalog the PA H-rails are listed. I went to ACK web site and was able to buy H-rail upgrade kit. I bought the PA-12 upgrade kit. I cut the both rails down to 37-7/8th inches. That lets the rails fit between the built in rod holders on the outboard side of the kayak. I had to remove the rear hatch to give my arm enough room to reach the bolt on the rear rail mount. You can do it by your self if you have long enough arms. I would recommend having help with that part. So one person can hold the bolt and the other person can put the nut on. Other than that it was easy and simple.

General Talk / 5 Rod rod holder
« on: August 26, 2015, 08:32:29 PM »
Made this to day so I could hold more rods on my outback. Each holder has its own bungee. Still need to add two more so it will hold my measuring board.

General Talk / Esox Rods
« on: August 12, 2015, 08:28:36 PM »
Got my new 70CB extra heavy fast tip in the mail today. It's rated for 1/2 to 2-1/2oz. So far I like it! Casts a 4 inch swimbait with a 1/2 lead head further than any Rod I have used. It great tip you can feel every thing! Gary is a great guy to talk to! Lots of knowledge! Does any one else have an Esox rod?

I'm new to the kayak fishing. I bought my hobie outback off my uncle last fall. Finally got it set up for fishing this year. I have done a lot of trout fishing out of it this year but would love to get out in the bay or ocean.
