General Fishing Tips / Re: Downrigging
« on: May 17, 2021, 11:26:35 AM »
Okay, I get the idea of not using the steel wire cable that comes with the Scotty downrigger- pretty much a no brained!  :smt003 :smt003

However- if you are running a weighted ball and do snag up why would you not want that snag to be off as quick as possible?  Wouldn’t a lighter weight braided line- say around 35-50 lbs test work just as well and not give an issue with snagging and the resulting capsizing risk?  It would seem that for a four to six pound weight going five times the ball weight should be sufficient.

Am I missing something here?  Thanks in advance for any input!!  :smt001 :smt001

I used 30# braid for a while and that’ll work. As you say, it might be marginally safer. But I did break it off unintentionally once when I cranked all the way to the top and just beyond, and it snapped. Since then, I’ve gone with 65#, and I never had any trouble with that.

Thanks for the advice.  I will be getting 65# braid; no sense in losing gear when heat of the hookup occurs!  I am also running a rubber snubber as also recommended by BDON- thanks!

Sorry for your loss.
Never an easy decision but thankfully a decision was made with all of the best intentions that were for his best interest.

I would certainly have an out if you do decide to leash yourself.  Personally, I believe this could get you in a horrible situation; a rope noosed around the neck makes for a difficult breathing operation.

There are "rescue" PFDs that have a means of securing another boat (even your own kayak) that has a release incorporated.  This provides a quick way to un-secure yourself.

https://m.sfgate.com/food/article/No-abalone-diving-allowed-in-California-until-2021-13460882.php?t=312a44b77d
Already having missed a whole season in 2018, abalone divers won’t be able to resume their sport for at least two more years.

According to the SF Chronicle:

On Wednesday, the California Fish and Game Commission decided to keep the state recreational abalone fishery closed through April 2021 in order to give the shellfish population a chance to bounce back. During a meeting in Oceanside (San Diego County), the commission based its decision on low density surveys — a tool used by biologists to measure the health of the abalone population — from key sites along the North Coast.

General Fishing Tips / Re: filet knives
« on: July 03, 2018, 08:06:53 AM »
I purchased an F. Dick breaking knife 10” on Amazon.
It has a decent flex and makes short order for the larger game fish.
Kershaw , Dexter, Wustoff are also good knives.
Depends on how much you want to spend...
