General Fishing Tips / mm thickness for farmer john style wetsuit
« on: April 16, 2024, 11:06:38 AM »
I need a new wetsuit.
I fish mtn. lakes in all seasons.  Water temps down to 38F, but usu in 40's.
I have a worn out 3 mm,  but was thinking thicker.

7 mm too restrictive?
3 mm was fine for me, including surf landing practice for 3 hrs. at Half Moon Bay in spring long ago.  I might fish salt water in BC, Canada, but I'm predator-leary in N. Calif.

I avoid getting in the water, have never dumped, but I fish very rough water at times and in rain (occ waves splash across bow - Pyramid Lk NV, Tahoe, etc.).

How thick?

Thanks for you thoughts and reasoning.

General Fishing Tips / Wetsuit vs. dry suit - which one?
« on: February 11, 2024, 09:42:38 PM »
I need a new wetsuit, but was thinking maybe going with dry suit.
Which is better?
I fish mostly from a 12-6 Cobra Fish n' Dive and 9-6 Hobie Mirage Sport.  I do not dive.
At times I bring fish onto my lap.  Does this ruin a dry suit?
I winter fish in Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake (NV) and fish SF Bay.  I want to stay warm and although I have never had to swim, I want to survive a cold water dunking or rough water washing/spray/rain/snow exposure.
Besides cost what are pros and cons.
Thanks for your thoughts.

General Talk / cameras and kayaking - need help choosing a new camera
« on: June 19, 2009, 06:00:12 AM »
I really want to take a camera out on my kayak and post photos of my catch and surroundings, but I fear ruining the camera in the water.
Can you recommend a good waterproof camera?
I read the July 2009 "Consumer Reports" on cameras and they recommend cameras with wide angles (nature and  landscapes) and dim light situations to suit my purposes.  However, they did not have a recommended waterproof camera and the ones they tested (Olympus) were consistently rated poorly over the past years (including now).
I could put the camera in a waterproof pouch, but the quality of the photos shot through the vinyl would be crap.
Costco has two waterproof Olympus cameras for sale which were not recommended for nature and landscape photos.
Have you used or seen the quality of photos from these non-CR recommended, waterproof Olympus cameras?  Am I nit-picking? What's the best waterproof camera for kayak fishers?

I went for the big Macks in Blue Mesa Res. nr. Gunnison, CO Fri. 5/15.  This is where the CO record Mack of 54+lbs. was caught in '07 or last yr.  I failed to catch anything trolling F13 Rainbow Rapala at 25' depth.  Everyone was holding onto their secrets as a tourney was on for the next two days. One guy in PB had a nice Rainbow and some Kokes.  A lot of shore and still fishing from boats with sucker meat and lots of guys jigging right off shore (20') in deep drop-offs.  Wind has been strong (15-30 mph) after 11 am or so until sundown.  I fished from 8 am - 11:30 am.  water temp 52, air temp abt 68.  I was told 150 or so PB's would be on the lake for the weekend tournament and I might prefer the action and no crowds at Taylor Park Res.  So we left after fishing on Fri.  I never saw the results of the tournament.
Fished Taylor Park Res. below the Continental Divide on Sun. and Mon. 5/17 and 5/18.  Sun. caught a 11" Rainbow and 18" Mack trolling a #10 Black Leech.  We camped next to a guy who caught a 20 lb. Mack casting a F13 Rainbow Rapala from shore.  (I caught two fat trout 13" and lost 3 while nymph fishing -non-kayak - in the Upper Taylor Riv.  The river was moving very fast from snowmelt and hardly fishable.  I lost the fish in the swift current.)
Mon. morn. I trolled a #12 jointed Rainbow Kwikfish in 12-25' deep water  bouncing on the bottom or very near for 20" and 24" Macks.  I was glad to catch the two, but a little disappointed that I didn't hook onto a hog.  Water Temp. 50, air temp low 60's to low 70's (noon).  Fished 7:30 am -12:30 pm.
If you go to CO, Taylor Park Res. is really nice.  The fish have pink meat and are delicious. A resort owner told me the fish taste like salmon.  He wasn't far off.  He also reported that three Macks over 20 lbs. (20, 29, and 30#) were caught in the previous 5 days.  The Res. is maybe 1 mile width and 1.5 miles long?   The campgrounds are excellent, the views of the Rockies spectacular.  There's river rafting, horseback riding, mountain bike riding, OHV roads everywhere, and even peace and quiet.  The sage brush lines the shore but the surrounding mtns. are all forested and the scenery of the Continental Divide is nearly unbeatable.  The lake is at 9000 ft. or so?   It's somewhat similar to the lakes along Hwy 395 near Mammoth in the E. Sierra.
Blue Mesa Res. is more Great Basin-like with surrounding hills of sage brush.  It's (the feeder Gunnison Riv.) also the breeding stock for Kokanee for seven western states.
There was only "one" other kayak fisher (two women trolling for Kokes on Blue Mesa who only caught a small Mack) we saw on the whole 4 day trip.
For this trip my wife are based in Grand Junction with daugh. and grandkids.  We're headed home Sun. after fishing around N. Tahoe at the end of the week.

4/23 (Thur) Fished 10:30 am - 12:15 trolling from Honker Cove Boat Ramp toward dam.
5 Rainbows 9"-11" (3 on silver Kastmaster, 1 on F5-J Rapala Fire Tiger, 1 on black BH Crystal Bugger [#6])  all toplining 130' back from kayak.
I was disappointed not to get any bigger ones given all the publicity of big fish planted last year.  Lots of small fish jumping.
Wind came up big time at 11:30 blowing 15+ mph steady (2' waves and whitecaps . . . was I in Raccoon Strait at slack tide in the late afternoon???).  Water temp. 56 deg. and air was maybe 57 deg. ?

4/22 (Wed) fished Lower Sardine Lk (Lakes Basin - Sierra Co) for 1 Rainbow (12.5")  on black BH Crystal Bugger trolling on top 150' behind kayak.  Wind blew in gusts to 10 mph and water temp was 45 degrees.

This morning it was snowing (8+" accum.) but it was light snow and should melt quickly.  Road to Sardine is open  and Sierra Co was plowing 2-3' of snow on Gold Lk Hwy.  About 9 camp sites are avail at Sard. Lk. Cmpgrd. ( others are under water or snow),  but all other campgrds. are closed at this elev.

Fished for stripers and possible wayward salmon 9ish am -12:30. I was planning a 7 am launch. I took out my digital camera in the new dry bag, but it had a dead battery as I tried to click a shot of the early morn. light and record the launch.  Then I realized that I had forgotten my paddle!  That was a first and I hope a last.  I had already taken off the kayak and loaded it when I realized my error.   I went over the new Benicia Bridge twice in one hour. I even forgot to bring my bananas! (Is this the residual effect from my earlier days of inebriation?)
Once on the water I was criss-crossing, trolling in spirals, trolling the mud-freshwater line, weaving back and forth through the foam and floating debris line, going close in to shore and pilings/docks and bouncing the bottom from 3' to 60'  - no takers for Crocodiles, J-plugs, Silvertrons.  Beautiful day, bottom of low tide to halfway flood to high, water was 66 degrees, 3-5 mph breeze from the west, and a small amount of exercise.

Went out with two friends and my best friend (my wife) yesterday morn. and fished from 10:30-3:30.   The first two dove for ab limits then we went out fishing.  They went north 1-2 miles and I stayed near the cove and fished the outer edge of kelp.  They caught blues, gophers, blacks and two vermillions (about 25 mostly C&R).  I caught ten and kept two gophers, two blacks and two Vermillions.  One of the Verms. was 19".  All were firsts for me.    I had three big take downs.  One was on a 10" Mission Mackeral swimbait fishing off a steep drop-off.  It went into the rocks and I had to break it off.  But I had a big scare while trying to break off the braided line.   I was maybe 75 yds from a shallow area of the kelp (prob. 500 yds off shore) and a large swell broke over the shallow with a huge sudden crash that scared the hell out of me. I got out fast.  Later I noticed that one swell every 10-15 min. broke over this spot.  My wife came out a bit later and it was nice to have someone closer to me.
The conditions were calm with 7' swell and the high fog dissipated by 2 pm.
Now the whining part . . . I took my camera, but was too occupied with fishing to take pictures or even think of giving the camera to my wife.  So in lieu of those action shots, I took photos (of the leftovers after cleaning the catch) for all of you and the two swimbaits I was using.  All were caught on the imitation 5" anchovy swimbait which I bought at Oakland Outdoor Pro Shop.
I hope the fish waste posts.  I may be a first for this website, but I only post it for the doubters  (  :smt001 ).

Places to Launch and Camp / Paradise Cay launch ramp blocked!!! 8/16
« on: August 17, 2007, 10:30:27 AM »
The old boat ramp in the junk yard at Paradise Cay at the Tiburon YC marina has been made nearly unusable. Anyone have any info. on this?  I launched here yesterday and it was a hassle.  A new dock has been built parallel to shore running nearly the length of the shore and about 4-6' from shore at low tide.  A very low (2' clearance at best?) walkway that has a locked gate accesses the new dock and blocks access to open water.  This ramp was free and provided very quick and easy access to open water and good fishing.  Now you may have to launch down the sloped embankment of rip-rap or go to the point at the marina entance and launch from the flat, sloping interlocking concrete blocks.

Fished Paradise Cay from the Tiburon Yacht Club bldg to Chauncy Point and back from 11 am - 3:15 pm yesterday.  No fish, no hits.  What a disappointment!  Was trolling Wonder Bread J-plug then switched to a new(?) anchovy swimbait that I bought at Oakland Pro Shop.
One boat had one halibut, two others nothing.  Water temp. 64-66, high tide at 3:20 pm.

Note:  The launch ramp was blocked in the water by a new dock built about 4-6 feet (at lowtide) from the shore and parallel to it.  I had to carry the kayak through a locked gate (left open for the workers putting in the new dock).  Then I had to paddle in <2' of water (4' wide) and under an overhanging  extension cord to get out.  Coming in at high tide I had to carry my kayak up over the rip-rap.  A kayaker from BASK told me he thought they were moving the launch ramp to a new public launch about 200 yds away, but that was only rumor.  It's a big loss if this ramp is closed.  it's free and easy and fishing has been almost always productive for me.

***   BEFORE YOU UNLOAD YOUR KAYAK CHECK ACCESS AT THIS SITE.  YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO LAUNCH WITHOUT HASSLES.

Also, I have not posted with photos except once or twice.  I suspect many readers doubt glowing reports without photo evidence, although no one has ever criticized or questioned my reports.  My reports are always 100% honest, but for silent naysayers (if they exist on this site) I purchased a dry bag for my camera after fishing yesterday.  I hope to get beyond the technical aspects of the computer and the website to easily post.  (Then you will see Piscolabis in action!!! . . . but don't hold your breath, there are a lot complex facets to technology seemingly barely attainable by me.  I have nearly reached the overload point when it comes to disciphering operation manuals.)

Fished for a couple hours at mid-day on McCloud Res. with my sister-in-law.  We had five Rainbows (planters) about 10-12" and she had another that went 15".  Used blue/white J-7 Rapalas and black #8 Crystal Buggers.  Lots of other hits.
It was my sister-in-laws second time out fishing from a kayak and she snagged her finger with a treble hook clear through the finger while trying to de-hook the 15 incher.  My wife cut the hook with wire cutters, pulled it though, applied hydrogen peroxide, bandaged it, and then her sister went back to fish for another hour of catching fish in the kayak.  What dedication!  My wife returned to reading her Sunset magazine. At least she loves to kayak.

I fished Jackson Mdw. Res. last night (Sat. eve.) 7pm-8:30pm.  Trolled #8 BH Black Crystal Bugger for five Rainbows and one 10" Rainbow toplining a J-9 Gold floating Rapala back 150' (all C&R).  All were 9-10" planters except one 16" and prob. 1.5 lbs. It gave the best fight for a trout in (my) memory -jumped, dove deep, ran, and twice it took my rod tip under water by more than a foot (!) when I thought it was finished.  No fish has taken my rod tip down except a Ling Cod.
Nice lake, but there were a couple water skiers (which didn't bother six fish).  Water temp. 68 F, air prob. 70 F wind was 8 mph at first then calmed down to slight ripple on water.  I put in at the Pass Ck. boat ramp and fished the point directly across the cove and trolled back into the cove.  It was in the shade and depth was 35' and I was trolling at about 20' deep. I would think mid-day would be nuts on this lake with power boaters.
I'm in Truckee now and will head back to J.M. to fish tonight's big evening bite.  One of the guys at Mtn. Hardware (Truckee) said the fish are larger at the inlet and it would be perfect for kayaking since the motor boats have a harder time getting in . I'm very confident.
Wed. night I fished Gold Lake from 7 - 9:30 pm for nothing.  It was windy (spelled g-a-l-e).
Thurs. afternoon fished Upper Salmon Lk. 3-4:30 pm for one Brook Trout abt. 9" caught 10' deep trolling with #8 BH Black Crystal Bugger.
(Non-kayak - fished N.F. Yuba R. yesterday 2:30-4pm and caught 9 (C&R) trout 5-9" using Parachute Adams #16 and # 16 Yellow Humpy.  A friend fished the section below Sierra City for over 30 (C&R) trout with Parachute Adams in the afternoon last Sunday.  The river is in perfect condition right now for fly fishing.

I fished for stripers at Paradise yesterday 2:30-5:00 p.m. for  nada.  I went to the pilings just west of the public fish. pier and back to the PC Yacht marina for nothing but some strong sporadic wind.  Then at 4:30 I had one ten second "hook up" near the "hope" buoy at the mouth of the marina.  I didn't hook the fish and couldn't believe it since the double treble hooks looked like anything near would be "snagged up."    I was thinking that maybe my slow troll (into the wind) had the trebles hanging down and the fish hit the plug body and carried it for a while as the hooks hung harmlessly out of the way.   Have you had any experience like this with a J-Plug?  The next time I'm pulling a J-Plug I might be tempted to put a rubber band on the plug to keep the hooks close to the body (but then if I did that why not just use another lure!?!).  I like the plug, but I assume I'm not going fast enough for the design (even though I was paddling medium effort into a good headwind).  Is that right or is this "kayaker flaw"?

Fished Lower Sardine Lake with a friend Sat. morning.  We caught two skinny Brook Trout 11" and 12.5" on Rapala Fire Tiger F5.  Water temp. rising 51-52 by noon. Air clear and a warm 68.  Fish were down on the bottom.  Anyone (but us) were getting them on worm and Powerbait on the bottom.
In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful lakes you can drive to in California.  It is one of many lakes in the Lakes Basin of Tahoe National Forest about 10 miles above Sierra City in Sierra Co. n. of Truckee.
Here is a photo of my friend Steve.

Fished Pyramid Lk Paiute Reservation n. of Reno for about 6 hrs. yesterday out of Sutcliffe, NV.  I caught one 19" Lahontan Cutthroat (F-J7  Fire Tiger Rapala) and my buddy caught one 22" (using a Hot Shot).   We were both toplining.  We saw a lot of fish being caught by the guys fishing from the wading stands and float tubes using flies.  Conditions:  water 51, air about 65, 20% clouds mostly clear, wind 0-2 mph.
Here's the shocker!  $9 (count 'em 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 bucks! to launch a kayak- same for all boats  and $10 for a permit to fish.). That was an expensive drive to get to pay those fees on top of it. If you go, pay the fees; the rangers in pick-ups and boats are out and checking everyone and the penalties start at $150 and go up. We were checked (and we were legal).

Today we fished Stampede Res. (nr. Truckee) from 10:15-12:30.  I caught a nice 5.4 lb Mackinaw near the dam by the exposed island (now a pennisula).  I was trolling a F-J 13 Brown Trout Rapala 12' deep and a setback of 175'.  conditions:  water 43, air mid-50's (?), mostly overcast (80%), wind calm for first hour then out of the W at 6-12 mph.  Boaters reported mostly no fish, but one had one fish, and another reported 7 Macs and 1 large SM Bass (I saw the very nice filet - they cleaned it at the boat ramp in the lake - totally uncool to trash the lake).
I wanted to stay longer, but my buddy needed to get home.
