General Talk / New Article - Halibut for the kayak
« on: October 31, 2005, 06:50:01 PM »
bsteves and scwafish and all---

Yeah, I feeel almost hypocritical submitting this article.  Originally written for that guy Zen and his Rabid Angler, back when I used to actually CATCH halibut.  It's still my favorite target.  Maybe next year.

I'm taking a pervers pleasure in my own flattie score this season....exactly 0 from the yak.

(I did catch one from the beach at Angel Island this June....the wind and current were so tough that I beached the boat and surfcast....nice Hali on a rattletrap.  I watched this particular fish chase the lure almost to dry sand.  It was pretty incredible watching that fish swim, sailing through the water.  Pretty damn fast, too.  I made an identical cast and ....fish on!   Released  successfully.  Doesn't count cause it wasn't from the yak)

It is just a wierd year for halibut.  They showed up late in way smaller numbers than usual.  I gave 6 or 7 good, specific flattie tries for nada in May and June.  After that, most of my trips thhis summer were with clients.  Two of them insisted on going for flatties despite my advice it was a real long-shot this year...results- no flatties, but great trys and plenty of rockfish and lings while trying.

It is probably just the regular variance of nature from year to year, but I think in Santa Cruz, the numbers were also negatively infueced by a gaggle of commercial guys that were catching halibut right on the edges of the canyons, as they migrated towards shallow water.  You'd think more would get through, though, and that's why I'm chalking it up to vagaries of nature.

Thaks for your kind reviews, guys.

General Talk / Kayak Angler of the Year

heeheeeheee-I like the fishoff idea!!  When and where, bring your prowlers, boys!

surf perch at manresa?  stripers at the forebay or San Quentin?  late season rockfish off the North Coast?  Trout at mooch's secret spot?

Could be a gas!

PS-  Seriously, I'd have to go with Bill or Mooch for the honor within this community.  Others have already said it better than I ever could.  Both these guys are true leaders and it's my personal honor to count them as my friends.

General Talk / Help- my car smells like fish
« on: October 24, 2005, 04:13:54 PM »
Reminds me of the time I left a bag of dead squid in the trunk of my BMW.  I went on a business trip for a week and when I got back the car was ripe.

I used the sunny day/open trunk lid technique for about a week or so. Didn't work too well for the lingering STANK.

The ultimate fix?  I sold the car to my brother.

General Talk / Surf fishing for Barred Perch
« on: October 20, 2005, 07:57:34 PM »
Mooch et all:

I have used my old trusty trout rod, old brown 7' Fenwick, but prefer my new stick.  I know I'm a bit overgunned but I bought a GLoomis spinning rod 8'6" last year for steelhead and it casts so nice.  I have it strung with 10# test and use 4-6# flouro for the leaders.  I plan on getting a smaller shimano spinning reel for it this season and loading it with 6 or 8 pound test.

I use a funny little long-shanked wire hook for the grubs, and, like Joel, prefer the Motor Oil Red Flake (MORF) because it seems to produce the best for me. I use anchovy or sardine oil on them, give a squirt every 3-4 casts.  I had some luck with root beer grubs last year, and the pink bubble gum grubs as well.  But, on any given day, the MORF smokes 'em.  Joel is also too correct regarding the supply and demand.  At one point last winter, Santa Cruz was completely OUT of MORFs.  Grizzled veterans were reported to be weeping in front of various tackle shops.

When I looked in my cabinet last week, I found a secret stash of about 60 MORFs I had hidden there last year. (I also found some velvet ropes and a fuzzy blindfold, but that's another story, for a different board)

The big fish at last year's derby was caught with ghost shrmp.  Other big fish that came in that day were caught on bait as well, so bait might be the ticket for size.  The biggest barred surf perch I've caught so far, being a beginner, was 12 3/4 inches.  It was pretty strong!

I'll get some pix of last year's Derby up on the radio show website and link over to them as soon as possible.  This year's Derby will be probably the 3d or 4th week of January, or the 1st week of February.  We have to arrange it around the big fishing shows to avoid conflict.  We're shooting for the Santa Cruz Yacht Club for the BBQ/party so it should be a gas.  It was unbelievable last year how many hard-core anglers turned out to chase the feisty little gamefish, especially with the lousy weather.  These guys are serious!  We had tons of prizes including rods and reels, grab bag baits, trips on charter boats, and guided kayak fihing trips.

I may get back out on Saturday or Sunday for an hour or two, and see what's happening, though if I have the time, I'll probably yak it.

General Talk / Surf fishing for Barred Perch
« on: October 20, 2005, 03:32:40 PM »
I did my first winter surfcasting venture last Saturday, just for an hour or so before I went to work that day.

Fished the Boardwalk Beach in Santa Cruz near the rivermouth, figuring there might be some structure/dip there.  the beach was pretty flat.

Used MORF grup with the carolina rig.  Caught one Barred perch and some jack smelt.

Tis the season.  I have a blast with this fishing, it's so easy.  I can kep the rig and gear in the car and just cast for 15 minutes or for three hours, depending.

laat year we had the big perch derby in January "The First Annual "Sand Crab Classic"  155 anglers participated on a blustery rainy day- gusts up to 50 and waves up to 10'!!!

The winning limit included  a barred perch measuring 15 3/4 inches.

We'll have the 2d annual classic this year, but the date is not set yet.  Hope many from this board can join us.  Proceeds go to the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

I'm starting to practice right now.

General Talk / lost drift shoot reward
« on: October 13, 2005, 10:19:48 PM »
Actually, this report is a separate, later report than the one I told Mooch about.  That one was from a couple weeks ago, again the shark was nosing around the drift chutes of a couple boats off Davenport.

Sean VS from PSRF has already tagged a  number of GWs at Ano so far this year.  It's an early year for them around here, usually it's November, this year it was October and even a couple few random sightings in September as far South as the cement ship!!!???!!!

Ed at Capitola Boat and Bait has a great picture of a halibut that local Dan Williams literally pulled out of the mouth of a small (15ft) GW at Davenport about a month ago.  You can totally see the curve of the jaws on both sides of the fish.

On a related note, I'm sponsoring the annual PSRF lecture/video/slide show agin this year at UCSC, Merrill College Cultural Center at 8pm on October 27th.

"WHITE SHARKS AND  APEX PREDATORS OF
MONTEREY BAY    ~Sharks You Should Know~"

All are welcome to attend and it's free.  Great videos and a great talk from a local guy that has tagged more GW's than anyone else in the Western hemisphere!!

I'll post more on that event later, as the date drews close.  MJore info at www.pelagic.org

BTW, I haven't paddled out at Davenport since early September.............

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Monterey 10/9
« on: October 09, 2005, 09:20:10 PM »
Compared to yesterday's weather, we really lucked out!  I fished the big boat with my daughter in SC yesterday. It was blowing 20 kt at 7am, and only got worse all day.  (Ema caught 18 of our 20 fish limit, then got 10 for the boat limits....she's bragging today!)

this morning, I was prepared to hop the hill and go to stillwater if the NW was howling again, but it was actually glassy (on top of a leftover bump) till about 9:30am, then the wind swung around and gradually increased up till 11:30 or so when we got out of the water.  It was very nice all morning.

Lotsa fun today catching the blues in that same litle corner by the 2d red can, 60 ft of water. GREAT to see Ed and Jim  out there (I know you guys are lurking....). It was so cool to pull up and see eight yaks or so rigged and ready to launch,  My companion today is from Houston where he fishes a Tarpon 160 in the flats for redfish where it's only 1-2 feet deep.  The mighty Pacific was a challenge  he stood up to well, pulling in fish after fish and releasing them all.  He was also impressed with our teamwork out there, with everyone giving tips and spot reports on 69.

I guess I caught about 6-8 blues altogether, mostly using the glow-in-the-dark hairraiser with a whole squid pinned on, and hanging generally at the bottom hoping for the errant halibut.  No joy.

So far, Big Red and I are tied for the year.   Perversely, I almost DON'T want to catch a halibut this year, just to say I got skunked for the whole season.

One sad note for the day........I said goodbye to my blue scupper pro and watched Mooch drive off into the sunset with it strapped on his truck.....(sniff)....lotta good times on that boat.  Hope to see it out once in a while still nailing big fish.

Hey Gato-

The clinic was through Monterey Bay Kayaks, where they advertise and book  the group.  We tried the first few at the end of the summer and they were so successful, we added two more.

Sadly, the last scheduled clinic was this past Sunday.  Weather willl be coming soon, and I really expected the good fishing to fall off.  I'm actually surprised at how good the fishing still is right in that little corner there at Delmonte Beach.  Easy paddle and willing fish.

Wouldn't it be cool if it was always like that?

Im did fish that area in February two years ago and caught a legal-sized ling, though it was out of season and had to go back.  So I think it's always somewhat fishy there.

Keep posting here, and hook up with the guys for outings.  I know I'll be fishing down there more often for sure, and I always like company.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Long day at Moss
« on: June 16, 2005, 05:05:38 PM »
I got a late start after I dropped the kids at school.  I got one hit trolilng or trooching at 80 ft, but it did not stick. Aside from that, nothing but the most beautiful day at Moss I've ever sen!

Calm, no wind, the sun even came out.  Great company and lots of laughs with this crew.

Congrats to Pat (who goes by Seabreeze, NOT 1/2 inch Pat, thank you) for her first salmonid on the yak.  She is a paddling machine.  On the way in, Bil hooked his bowline to her Prowler 13 and got a free ride to the harbor.

Thanks guys for a nice day.
