Introductions / Re: Hello and Question
« on: August 11, 2016, 02:34:55 PM »

I supposed it is possible, but I have never done it myself, just seems too short of a window for kayak launch and fishing (at least for me anyway).  Perhaps to maximize fishing time, you can go close to shore (i.e. ARW, Oyster Point).  I am a worrier, so I always take my time to make sure all gears are in place, so it always take me awhile before I launch.

As for shark, I don't worry too much about them inside the bay (anywhere inward of Alcatraz), but that's just me.  Not sure about HMB, maybe others can chime in?

When it's dark, safety is first.  Make sure you have marine lights so others can see you, especially power boats (PBs).  The PBs are on the water with the same goals with you, catch fish during the right times, so always be on the lookout for them.  This the light set that I have, haven't failed me yet (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Attwood-Marine-Telescoping-Portable-Bow-and-Stern-Clamp-On-Light/50819778).  You can catch it around $20-$25 with sale, coupons, etc.   Also, it might be obvious to some, but be sure to have lights so you can setup your gear and see your way to the launch ramp.  Some day, it would surprise you how many people are trying to do the same thing you do, other days, you are the only one on the ramp.

I think your best bet is always to have a buddy with complete safety gear, and lights of course  :smt001

Thanks Fahrenheit840!  I pm'ed you for some of those jigs.

Thanks Sailfish!  We met at Jim's warehouse, I was the guy with the yellow G2, hull#2.  I believe it was either a Saturday or Sunday, you and Jim went for breakfast then came back.  I installed a rail by the front pod.  Not sure if you remember, but I certainly remember you  :smt001

Hi LizN, certainly nice to e-meet you.  'glad there are a lot of interests and feedbacks on your thread, lots of good guys/gals here that can give excellent advice.

^^^^^^ that

Agreed with dtizz on not using towel/gloves if you plan to not keep the fish, lip gripper is best (that's what I use as well).

Also, have a plan on what to do if the fish goes 'berserk' on your yak after you decide to keep it (on my case, the duty goes to the towel).  They all go berserk, large or small.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Action camera intro
« on: August 10, 2016, 05:54:04 PM »

I don't have any direct experience with this, but the new Xiaomi 4K seems to be up to par with the GoPro Black edition, shoots at true 4k at about $200 less or so compared to the GoPro Black edition.

'saw your G2 mods, very interesting.  One of this day, I will learn how to harness wind power  :smt001

+1 on the Ugly Stik Lite, those things will last a long time at a reasonable cost.  The lighter the better, after awhile on the water, everything will feel heavier.

+1 on 10lbs line being too light.  You may want to try Trilene Big Game 20 or 30lbs line (get the green color, although the clear one is good too).  It is reasonably price and last awhile.

As far as reel choice, I recommend a spinning reel as a starter.  You can throw your lure/bait farther away without too much 'bird nest', especially for a beginner.

As far as handling fish, you can get a pair of cloth-based glove from Home Depot at a decent price, or just use an old towel to grab the fish.  Not getting any fish is pretty common, so if it happens to you, don't beat yourself up.

By the way, I like LoletaEric's recommendation.   Also, post a date as to when/where you want to go out and see if anybody with experience can go out with you.

Introductions / Hello from San Jose
« on: August 10, 2016, 03:36:07 PM »

Hello All,

My name is Victor H, 'been lurking for awhile, but finally decided to register and do an intro.  'loving all the info and friendships in NCKA.  I usually launch from Santa Cruz, Capitola, Monterey Bay, ARW, Oyster Point and local lakes/reservoir.  Not a beginner, but not the most advanced either.  I'll launch from almost any reasonable surf if there is a promise of a salmon nearby :)

Goal this year is to launch from Muir Beach (or Stinson) and to catch a WBS.

Hit me up if you want to check out the Santa Cruz Raptor G2 or you just want to yak, I am from San Jose area (by 85/87).

If you are anywhere around San Jose to Gilroy, check this freshwater Moonlight Paddle events:

General Talk / Moonlight Paddles 2016 - Calero and Anderson
« on: August 10, 2016, 03:21:55 PM »

Lots of folks in Sunnyvale to Gilroy area, so I thought I post this.

Santa Clara County Parks still have two Moonlight Paddle dates left for 2016.  Free to participate, but you have to pay $6 to enter, $4 for vessel inspection, the usual safety gear, and 2 glowsticks (you can get them in Home Depot for minimal cost).  Non-fishing excursion and no alcohol.  If anybody is going to be there for any of the event below, see you there, I'll be in a yellow Santa Cruz Raptor G2.  Probably going to be there early to fish first  :smt001

Anderson Lake Reservoir (Morgan Hill) - Tuesday, August 16, 7:30pm to 10:00pm

Calero (San Jose) - Thursday, September 15, 6:45pm to 9:15pm

Probably a mild event for most NCKA-ers, but hey, you get to get out.  See attached brochure.

Count me in for two.

The PA is a great yak, but it's pretty dang heavy.  If you go out on your own a lot, get a one seater.  If you need to go tandem, rent it.

+1 on Santa Cruz Raptor G2.  I love mine and Jim's been great with helps and questions, plus he is local.  You can try without the fins and upgrade at a later time if you like.  Can't beat that.
